| | | I went on a trip to Seattle back in the fall, and I learned about the underground city. There are tours of this underground and you can check it out here: http://www.seattle...dergroundtour.html This would be definitely cool to check out though, and living in Vancouver for most of the year, its only 2 hours away for me. But I would much rather explore this on my own, and maybe at night... Does anyone know if these areas are now privately owned, or if that is even at all possible?? Is getting into this space without a tour even possible (Locks, guards, etc.)?? You may want to PM me for this one.

| | | I took the tour when I had a 7 hour layover at SeaTac. It was ok, not as great as I thought (I was picturing a labyrinth of interconnected tunnels, but it's really just hollow sidewalks circling each block). From my brief observations, I believe most entrances are locked due to the incredible homeless population. However, I did see a couple potential entrances that could stand a look: The shipwreck parking garage. The wannabe subway (mech rooms?). Any block where there is an abandoned building and those bottle-bottom skylights in the sidewalk. Waterfront piers and roads. A lot of the waterfront seems to be up on pilings, in many cities this was the first step to raising the street level, so there may be void spaces accessible below the docks and streets, or drains that go interesting places.

| | | for one, it's not nearly as cool as your imagination would have you believe. two, the vast majority has either been filled after the nisqualy quake, or bricked off into basement storage areas. not to mention it's just a bunch of detritus reeking of rat piss. there's way more interesting shit to see in the area. | | | I agree, I have done the underground tour and it was good in that you get to see the original seattle street scape pre-fire, everything else got built up a storey but again i agree it was not what i was hoping as it was a bit... hmm...staged is the best way to put it.. a lot of blocked off areas and very controlled what you can see, i guess like going to a museum
It seems you've just been looking with your eyes closed. |

A resident Seattalite, I've taken the tour and agree with you exactly. The problem is that it's not set up for someone who wants to seriously go exploring, it's set up for the random tourist either new to the area or just visiting. I really couldn't have expected much more from something that's been taken over commercially... if you want to do it right, you have to do it yourself.

That's good to know. I've found a lot of places in my neighbourhood that look enticing. Think I'll try a few.

| | | The underground tour is pretty cool for a random tourist historical tour. I've done it twice. Once in 1995 and again in 1998. It's a lot of fun for someone interested in history. For exploring, it's not so great, but that's not the point of the tour anyway.

Or you can get the best of both worlds - sneak into the tour tunnels ... http://www.actionsquad.org/SMXsquad.html

| | | After reading this, I tried sneaking in myself. I was successful, but I kept running into tours and having to act like I 'belonged'. And since the tour guide is the last to leave each room, I was swept out twice (after sneaking in twice) before I finally gave up. What I saw wasn't that interesting. They had pictures and plaques and lighting systems...
