Hi people! I'm new to this site and I'm wondering if anybody knows anything about tunnels under Uvic? I think it would be pretty fun to explore them if they exist.

My understanding is that there isn't a proper utility tunnel system at UVic.

Agreed. I spent a few years poking around UVic. There are a couple of underground passageways leading from one building to another, but nothing along the lines of what I would consider 'tunnels.'

But just because you haven't found them doesn't mean they don't exist.

I'm paraphrasing Donald Rumsfeld here, and we all know where that might lead.

Right, Jester?

Nonetheless, passages connecting buildings are cool. I need to find these.

Elliot, Science/Engineering and Cunningham are all connected at basement level.

Elliot lab wing is connected with Elliot lecture halls via the basement.

Elliot lab wing is also connect with the biochemistry labs along the 2nd floor, and possibly basement (although that would be harder to get through).

The building with the biochemistry labs is connected to the biology lab building

UVic is on top of a hill. Stormwater at UVic drains into 5 different drainage systems. The largest is Bowker Creek. Several of these drainage systems do have tunnels under UVic that empty into larger tunnels further out. None that I have found on campus are large enough to get into. There are some larger ones, but they all start just outside of campus.

You can get the stormwater management plan from the UVic facilities management website. There are maps of the drainage systems and where the tunnels are located.

There is no central heating at UVic. Every building has it's own furnace. This means no utility tunnels leading from one building to another. Unfortunate.

Just FYI, there is a tunnel between the Young Building and the Ewing Building at Camosun. It's not interesting; I've spent a lot of time down there stringing CAT5. It really is just a tunnel filled with conduits.

But it's fun to watch people's reaction in the winter when it snows; there's always a line of melted snow where the tunnel heats the ground, and people always figure that because the Young is almost 100, it must be some mystic passageway. ;)

Oh, and if you've heard them, the stories of the Young Building are true. In the clock tower, there are signatures on the walls dating back to 1927. My name is up there, dated 70 years later.

Sounds pretty cool bailey_ca. I've heard of those areas before from a guy I know. I'm totally going to check them out!

More thread revival!

The Young Building at Camosun is one hell of a spooky place. I wish I had a camera with me, but I've been all through the subfloor above the 3rd floor, in the clock tower, on the roof, etc.

I don't believe in ghosts/the spiritual world, but at times, I'd just get this overwhelming urge to get the hell out of that place-- it can be freaky in the dark.

The renovations Camosun has done to the interior of the building border on criminal. Very little of the building is original. Back when I was a student, the east washroom had original urinals and marble walls in the stalls. They've since been renovated to the standard "institutional grey steel walls" theme.

I'll see if I can find all the photos I took of the place before they renovated it. You can crawl through the subfloor from one end of the building to the other, hang out in the elevator mech room, etc.

I have to remember to take photos of the staff washroom next time I go. It's the coolest place I've ever gone pee-- possibly the only place in the building that hasn't been renovated. Hooray for huge, raised-floor, tiled "urinal rooms". ;)

Hmm I tried to get into that subfloor many times but everything is so well locked. A few times they left some doors open but they were just ventilation duct closets. The clock tower is cool. I haven't been there in about a year now.

I looked around tonight...

All the utility doors are locked tight. Even tried picking the locks, but decided against it. There's three old-fashioned doors and one new wooden door on the south side, running east to west., the rest are classes or swipe-card locked media rooms.

I went into the basement as well. Didn't see the passage way from that building into the other, but I did find a pair of vaults. Huge built-in things, with old brass handles and combination locks. Note to self - take batteries for flash, dammit.

Anyone wanna pm me for tips on how to get into the clock tower?

PS- my family friend's dad helped paint the place in 1914.
