ive been seeing this all over town, at least to three of my known locations,
its terrible victoria has some of the best "tunnels" in my opinion but not many so this is tragic.

Whoever you all are that's causing this - quit raping these locations!

Well, Snap. I'm feeling retro so picked a random spot to drop in on our venerable thread. Clicked 10 pages forward and the ADD kicked in, meaning nothing cooler than this post by Mikejpc was found... The loss of those surrounding buildings is sad, and now the bridge. Why?, because it reduces the old town awesomeness so much, and is a world class industrial era icon. We could have kept the character bridge, and put a six lane at Bay Street, it's not that far away from downtown. In time Rock Bay will kick in like False Creek, and all can be linked. F**K heritage loss

Politicians don't care about foresight, say 20 years from now. They only care about "investments" today! Follow the money. It may go along the rail line.

Very true. I miss the Dayliner, hope they realize it (and other use of the line) could be financially viable long term, with a bit of effort.

Hey Sailor, how long you in town for?

I to miss the dayliner. I ALWAYS rode in the rear end cab. I miss that. It's allowed if you ask nice! Or...was. It saddened me to see the rail bridge gone today, and the tracks being ripped up on either side. It felt like a part of my memories were being torn right from the earth. Imma walk from the station by my house here by the Malahat to downtown Vic when I have a free day soon. The Province of BC entered the Dominion based on a "functioning island railway in perpetuity". I'm not holding my breath with the dirt bags in power over in Ottawa.

Not likely. Nothing goes north of Parksville right now, due to poor track condition.

Howdy,
I already posted in welcome thread.

Trying to catch up on these 170+ pages (read some random pages 1-3 & 161-170), it will take a while...But I am going to be active as possible.

Going to miss the bridge...
I live in ESQ and do not drive, but I am down for whatever, whenever, wherever, although I usually explore solo.

Good find! Mind if I share these on Haunted BC's "Janion" album?

PS. Agreed, losing the bridge sucks

I'm not sure if you are asking me or Mikejpc, who originally posted them. Thanks for asking though. You might want to check with him, but I think they are in the archives, which have public access. Nice stuff you are posting on here. One of your old highways looks like a road outside of Colwood and surrounding area... at least it looks similar to another abandoned road.

In time the mistake of destroying the bridge will sink in, eventually more people will realize how we were hoodwinked, (to use a PC word) and how the key heritage component of Victoria's prime downtown heritage area was lost. A wider bridge at Bay Street could get more traffic out of downtown too.

Then keep and restore the funky Steampunk industrial era iconic counterweighted counterpoint that could have been Old Blue, just a few blocks away.

Pardon mini rant. Awesome shot of the tube by the bridge. Cheers, A.

I don't think any expansion of the Bay Street / Point Ellice Bridge would have been feasible, as the artery on either end of it, particularly the Esquimalt side, is land locked. The amount of land acquisition required would be immense.

Hardly an excuse to bring down a bridge as rare and iconic as the Johnson though. The standard plan for bridge replacement is to twin the existing structure before demolishing the old one, to minimize traffic disruption, and then reroute the approaches. That being said, a new bridge could have been built and the 1924 bridge could have been left in place for foot and cycling traffic. Concerns over repair and maintenance costs could have taken a back seat, as not having the pressures of heavy vehicle traffic would certainly buy some time to build up a budget for it. Hard not to assume that council just plain wanted a new bridge, whether it was needed or not.

Of course this is all in response to the bridge's maintenance schedule being halted. Demolition by neglect got us all to this stage.

Stop painting and cleaning the Golden Gate Bridge for ten years and see what happens to it.

Ahh, yes... my bad. Didn't see the quote. Mikejpc, do you mind? I know they're public photos, but I do like asking because it was you that found/posted them here

The abandoned road was actually in Metchosin, but I'd be interested to hear where the Colwood one is! (I love old highways/roads!)
