Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Bridge Tunnel

This is my first post on UER.
I found this place quite by accident, I'd decided to have a closer look at the construction of a bridge, including what was underneath it, as it's a fairly high bridge for where we are and I'm curious as to A the structure of the bridge (I can see beauty and elegance in engineering) and B How the heck did they build such a large structure while leaving the salmon spawning stream below it untouched. I found a hole. I investigated with the light from my cell phone - for what seemed an hour. Totally stoked, I returned about 2 weeks later with camera, vid-cam, lights, and Fiancee... all packed onto a motorcycle. She was excited to go on an adventure, but was reluctant to go down the loose dirt slope, and really reluctant to investigate the hole, mainly because it was difficult to get into the hole. Once inside with some illumination however, her fears turned into nervous exitement. We set up my still camera with no flash, and walked away from the camera, illuminating the tunnel for the timelapse photos. Me the first time, and both of us the second. We'll return better equipped to get some better photos, so one can see the full length of the first segment.
The entire tunnel is approximately 30 feet wide, 400 meters long (almost exactly) and ceiling varies from about 10 feet to 20 feet in height.
The pic of me beside one of the vertical columns (the shortest of the 3 columns) shows the size of the structure. I'm 5'10", my beautiful fiancee is 5'11", yes taller than me. In these pics, she's wearing her high heeled riding boots, which makes her about 6'2" for a size reference in these pics.

As with other locations, one cannot detect the dust that's been stirred up until a flash goes off - which is as we're all familiar, the cause of the apparent snow.

The tunnel consists of 4 segments, 82, 118, 118, and 82 meters in length each. The segments are separated by doorways that lead into smaller chambers the full width and height of the tunnel, but only about 8 to 10 feet in length. These chambers are over the support columns, with locked trapdoors that lead into the columns.
The floor is curved down at the columns, to the approximate 20 foot ceiling height, to about 10 - 12 feet at the lowest thinnest points.

There are small drain holes in the floor at even spaces, showing the river valley below. There was an unfortunate bat that had found its way in, and never found its way out again - rather dried out. We found a small purple monster sitting on a ledge. Photograph included here showing that we were not the first here. The only 'tags' were left over a decade ago, the year the bridge was built. Someone thoughtless had left a beer can inside, so we removed that. But left the little purple monster
There are electrical conduits with outlets spaced along the walls, and extension cables at each end of the bridge, so workers could have a generator outside, run the cables to it, and energize the system.
The only other things we took were photos and memories, and I don't think we even left any footprints.

We took about 30 mins of video footage, but using only hand held LED worklights, the light is inadequate. I had to leave the camera in Night mode, which negatively affects the frames per second, but it gets the job done.
The fact that we were both wearing camo pants was COMPLETELY co-incidental to our activities. They just fit her well while she's on the back of the bike, and I wanted to match her.

I never thought of exploring inside a bridge section b4, then again, big bridges in flatland aka, Ontario are hard to come by.

P.S. I like the matching pants. A+

This is odd - I posted it in UER Main, then it somehow got moved to Ontario. How can I move it to BC?, as Vancouver Island, British Columbia, (in the title) is not in Ontario...

Suddenly the topic finds its way to the right forum.
I have no idea how this all happened. But it's fixed.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

Good work. Looked like an enjoyable exploration.

And it's nice to see a bit of action in this sub-forum. ;)

Well, it appears that the location is no longer accessible.
It's been sealed. We'll, not actually sealed, but I cannot push the 400 pound lid more than an inch open while standing on my toes, so it's closed now. The Ministry of Transportation has written a warning at the opening as well, stating that it's a confined space and the air may not be safe, despite the fact that each end has open air vents that are 4 feet across.
I'll try to find some decent stills from the video that we got while there that are are worth grabbing.

Does it have the little computer hook up thing on it for correct ID of what confined space it is yet?

Maybe you should talk to some people that know about the bridge in Hamilton...one of them has real nice internal tunnels....

If you can't find out...PM me and I can try to set you up.....

Bridges in Ontario hard to find???

I have rapelled and done rope jumps off many many bridges around southern Ontario, all within 1 hour of Toronto. Some are actually in Toronto. You must not get out much. We have many bridges. Some even have tunnels like the one pictured here.

You know the big concrete blocks along the walls of the bridge chamber? In Hamilton a large bridge built the same way has those concrete blocks. The workers encased a hardhat, two work gloves, and two work boots in one of the blocks. It all sticks-out just right to appear like a person is embedded in the concrete, it was pretty funny to find that late one night.

You can't be lost if you don't care where you are!
