Cool! Biggest Washington drain I've seen pictures of in recent memory. Been in? I'd love to see more... AFAIK, the outfalls off Seattle have all long since been extended way out into deep water. I suppose if you were a real nut, you could SCUBA down to them! That would be some real "James Bond"-style UE'ing.

Cheers,

i checked this out last night, but i missed low tide and couldn't see much. there are plenty of places to park... but one lot is a hobo campground and a cop was sitting there last night (i've seen them there before). that's the closest place to park. there's also huge "no trespassing" signs on the wall leading to the drains. probably not a huge deal except that cop is usually there, about 200 feet away.

That first pic looks definitely kayak-accessible, seems like typical high tide doesn't flood it completely.

The best part about drain boating is the looks on people's faces when you come out!

How about the upper end, is there an infall or does it tree-branch down into smaller and smaller pipes? I know some cities in that area have public works GIS servers with drain data available.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Okay, so if you're interested in the twin-96ers, definitely check out
http://cms.cityoft...lan%2011-15-05.pdf
and
http://www.epa.gov...es/oec/asource.pdf

Other interesting "major" drains in the Tacoma area that you can pull up info on would be the 230, 235, 248/253 and the 254 (the twins, aka 237A and 237B, notwithstanding).

Havent been there yet, but its likely that the outfalls are located near E Dock St, at the southern end of the TF waterway.

The drains collect stormwater from South Tacoma/Nalley Valley area as well as the Portland Avenue area, including I-5.

Because of this, there is a good chance that the drains still contain residual contamination from chemicals such as PCBs, HPAHs, pesticides, and other fun carcinogens, so precautions such as waterproof clothing, etc. are advised if you plan on going in (unless you're a republican, then go for it. You've probably built up a natural immunity by now anyway).

I'm pretty sure those rules apply only to members.

Okay, so I broke my leg on the 11th and just started walking again yesterday. When I am fully healed I am hitting the drains as soon as possible before it starts raining. I checked it out as much as much as my current condition allowed, and they are definitely right under east dock street. Some climbing may be involved to access them, and I should be in the clear in a few weeks.

PS: Parking might be bitchy, I recommend Tacoma Dome Station and walking north north-west towards the waterway, mind the train tracks.
