| | | Hi A.Lien! Thanks for the heads up about the Open Door. The impression that they gave me via e-mail wasn't very warm. My great-great grandpa was Charles Gowen. I just inherited the family bible and discovered a bunch of cool things. I've been pumping the last remaining family member who remembers not Charles but his son Gus. She has tried her whole life to find out what happened to the rest of the family. Any one know let me in. I found out about him being the volunteer fire chief while looking through records of him on line. Would love to get into the archives under the pretense of family, and get a look at some of the records from that time. From what I understand this was around the same time that the cisterns went in. I initially got into the research part of this because of my family, but also from our history in Victoria. Charles Gowen owned the Phoenix Brewery, and was also responsible for taking those silly camels up north during the gold rush. On a side note, I may have been able to look at the new drawings for the Market Square development. I wanted to get a look at what there might be surrounding the foundations, as in tunnels. Of course it was short lived as the fellow is a big turkey and didn't want to have any sort of conversation with me about any silly tunnels. My parents grew up in Victoria and have told me so many fascinating stories over the years about the tunnels and the witches and what not. I do know that crazy things happen around there and would love to hook up with people that can share some stories with me, but also hear mine and not laugh at me. I'm not saying they are all true, but if we had enough of these stories together that it could be investigated... well, just saying. The only cool thing I ever got to see myself was under the Empress, about 12 years ago. my ex was an electrician that was called into to fix some wires in the service tunnels, way cool stuff!! Wish I'd taken a camera, my cousin's wife works there, I'll see if I can pump her for some stories. Nice to meet all you folks, I've enjoyed all the adventure and drama this thread brings. Just a side note, someone in here mentioned about a hundred pages ago that they had talked to a fellow on Salt Spring about some tunnels, curious does anyone know who he is?? (I'm sure we are related, small island and all, lots of sheep...) Cheers! SSIgirl

| | | Posted by SSIgirl If some one has some ideas for me on how to get further with this picking of family history that would be great.
| Your great, great grand-father had the social rank of Esquire. Do you happen to know if his title was a result of being a member of the upper gentry or if the title came from the more modern usage of being a lawyer? He drove camels; he volunteered as a fireman; he presided as Grand Master; he owned a brewery...seems possible, but improbable that he was a lawyer. Plus, I think that usage is too modern anyway. My point is simply that if he was a member of the upper gentry, it might give you modern inherited rights of noble or gentle birth. Ladies and gentlemen...SSIgirl - a noble among us! Nevertheless, I know nothing of such social order of precedence in modern usage. Also, I suspect that any modern rights given you as a woman of gentle birth would be trumped in Victoria by being the great, great grand-daughter of a Grand Master. I don't remember my history too well, but I seem to remember Victoria's split from the Scottish Freemason happened sometime around your great, great grand-father's Grand Mastership. I would go the "hey, i'm one of you guys!" route. Though I hate to say it, your task would be so much easier were you a man - seeing as both nobility and freemasonry have always been (and are still very much) fraternal. Just thoughts...

| | | Actually the women's equivalent of Odd Fellows was/is The Rebekahs. When in public members of either group would put their hand in a certain way to indicate they were a member. If the guy saw this gesture, he would start talking to the lady, knowing she was a member. If in your shoes, I would 'infiltrate' to use a rare term, their meetings, in an above board way, of course, saying you're considering joining. Maybe hold off mentioning your GGGF was Grand Master Flash, rode a white camel faster than speed of light, etc. And then once a member, well, research across to the Odd Fellows. I believe the Rebekahs use the same building, which is full of very unique and cool historical stuff. Hopefully there will be another Open Doors event. Perhaps contact the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, or the Visitor Centre. I believe you about Moby's it's a pub, not everyone is into pubs.

| | | I totally have that album! It's rad but I prefer the spunky beat and chirpy lyrics of The B 52's From Wikipedia: The Rebekahs (or the Rebekah Lodges) are the female auxiliary of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.[1] The Rebekah Lodges were founded in the early 1850s, largely due to the efforts of an Odd Fellow named Schuyler Colfax. Initially, the Rebekah Degree was granted at Odd Fellow Lodges, but by the 1880s the Rebekahs and Odd Fellows conducted separate lodge activities, as they do today. The Rebekah Lodges get their name from the Biblical character of Rebekah. Rebekah Lodges are still active, despite the fact that the Odd Fellows now accept women as full members. There are male and female Rebekah members. Girls too young for membership in the Rebekahs may join the Theta Rho Girls' Clubs, just as boys can join Junior Odd Fellow Lodges. Rebekahs observe the Odd Fellows' creed of "Friendship, Love and Truth", and are engaged in many social and charitable activities worldwide. *The name Colfax here may be slightly ironic, there is a member by the name J.T. Colfax on UER.

| | | Thanks Yosh! Unfortunately there was no smarts in the family like lawyer, Charles Gowen came to us via Seattle were he was a furniture sales man. He seems to have moved through the circles cause the guy could make just about anything happen for him. This is inherited thank goodness! (LMAO!) Interesting about the IOOF I'm going to ask one of my three brothers to try and get in there to look at the photos, that's all I really want, but any extra info, or where the rest of my family is would be great too. There seems to have been a bit of a social split the generation down from Charles, the haves and the have nots... so difficult to get much info out of old Auntie, because they weren't allowed to mingle. I'm wondering now however if my GGGgrandmother was a Rebeka or not. Might just be a lot easier for me that way. I'll try and contact them via email first and see what they have to say, the IOOF were not helpful via email, and indicated that I might want to join the Rebeka order. I remember my Great Grandparents as being elitists, and even my grandparents, so not shocked by this way of thinking by such an old order. As for camels, the adventure worked until the end of the gold rush, and then he was left with a whack o' camels, my Aunt says they ended up some were in the Fraser Valley. And then began the brewery with his camel partner. I've only found a couple of pics, but one looked like he was enjoying a good gallop. Thanks for all the input guys!! And A.Lien come on over here, Moby's is like riding a camel, you just don't forget how to do it!!

| | | Hey Ninja, I've had needle pokes before, first this sounds dumb but get it to bleed out under running water and then give it a healthy dose of bleach, or peroxide. Then get you're but to the dr's for the mentioned blood test. Hep C and B (not always sexual), along with HIV can be passed on depending on how fresh the needle is. It also depends on shat the person had, most likely thing to worry about is Hep C. This can live linger then the HIV virus in blood away from its host. Tetanus can be a worry too, if the needle was really old. Blood poisoning is another. Sorry to be the angle of doom, I used to drive ambulance out of Jubilee, seen lots of crazy stuff on the streets down town. If you are going into places that may have these things laying around, make sure you wear 10 mm gauge gloves, that saved me a lot of freaking out when looking at people in gutters and what not. It might pay off to carry a little kit with you too, of just in case stuff. If the needle point is still in you try making a poultice to draw it out, or get the dc to cut it out, they can be painful and stay in there for years if the skin heals up around it. I hope you get better quick, and I'm sure none of the evil things I mentioned above will happen to you, but better to have knowledge then not. And I find that Snoopy band-aids fix things the best!
