This headlamp is disgustingly bright, and it has a surprisingly good battery life. I go everywhere with it.

I wonder if it would be possible to hook a car headlight to a battery and use that as a light source... If so, that would be my choice.

Not only has it been done by many people, but there are lights that are meant to lock on top of a 12Volt battery.

I also have several rechargeable CR123A-size lithium batteries that could be recharged by my small solar panel.

Hey, that's kinda cool - have you actually tried it? How long does it take to charge up one or two batteries?

I have not hooked them up yet, but I have a couple of old garden solar panels that are currently in working condition. I'll let you know when I manage to use them to recharge batteries. So, I have not yet done it, but in the case of emergency, I'm sure I could figure something out.

Just ordered my Romisen RC-I3. Nice looking flashlight, and it's cheap, too.

One nice thing about the RC-I3 is that if you wrap a little bit of thin tape around the end, you can fit a Fenix lantern-style diffuser:

More for drainers, but:

http://www.amazon....=1233688976&sr=8-1

20 Million Candlepower/3335 Lumens for 90 bucks.

I've seen a 2 million candlepower spotlight light up a drain tunnel for about 100 yards before it hit a slight bend. I can't imagine how bright this would be.

Unless it holds a charge well, it could be total crap and run for 5-7 minutes like the 10mil power I had which just went dead after an expo.

I have heard good things about the Pelican BIG D from someone here...

http://www.lapolic....com/pebigdfl.html

But seriously 1-2mil power torches are more then enough unless you plan on helping aircraft to land in the middle of the amazon, or something.

When I started this whole UE thing I was obsessed with expensive flashlights that supposedly would make my life better when using them for exploring. Now that I've been doing this for a few years, I favor cheap lighter models... The kind you could buy at the register in WalMart or Big Lots.
To me the best flashlight is the kind that you are not afraid to lose, to drop or to brake...the kind of light that you might have to ditch...the kind of light that I won't worry about because I've spent huge amount of money on it...
Don't get me wrong...I own my share of pricey light emitting rigs that I use as needed. It's just lately when I'm about to enter a new location, I use one of my
"disposable" flashlights with fresh batteries...No worries, no problems. Travel light, take good photos, get out alive and have fun.

I think your right, I only really care about lights to assist with my photography. On the occasion I just go take a look somewhere, I just take the maglite. But photographers are total gear whores anyways so....

I use a AA maglite with the Nite Ize LED upgrade and the I.Q. pushbutton all for around $20, if you know where to look. It provides a nice flood pattern, but for far distance I use a big ol army surplus right angle torch

And when you finally disappear, We'll just say you were never here.

Because we all have 600 dollars to spend on a flashlight.

Seriously I would spend 1/2 that on

Or better yet... I'd spend <100 on parts and build my own. It CAN be done.

ya, but these come with an external battery attachment... good for a decent capacity 'cheap' lead acid battery to easily range it up to 12 hrs+ burn time... while maintaining a water-resistant demeanor and manageable backpack weight....

You are right about the MSRPs tho... way out of line....

You've got that right

I notice I only say "oh, the gear isn't important" once I have all the gear.

OBLIGATORY PLUG: Don't forget there's a private board called Flashlights, Torches, and Portable Lighting, for all your lighting discussion needs. We also like light painting. It's in the list of private boards, but if that sounds like too much work, feel free to PM me if you want to be added.

Although with an internal battery lifetime of only 15 mins, your little egg cooker might get you killed pretty fast in a tunnel....

Just add this one to the "Lets make Santa Broke" list of wishful things...

Its nice to dream.

Excellent. Gear whores of the world unite! Handy little bits of plastic, those diffusers; I can't tell you how pleased I am that they now make them in a larger size.
