So I was looking at various bike and was wondering if disk brakes were really all that great as opposed to the standard style of brakes.. Anyone have much experience using a bike with them?

I was wondering this because I was looking at the Montague Paratrooper and MX...

I have them on my mountain bike....they are very nice, only problem I've found with mine is that the disk got warped some how and makes a rubbing noise. I need to bleed them though, so that might be the problem.

They stop on a dime, if you aren't careful you can pull on them too hard and go over your handle bars when you first get them. I like them alot overall though.

Maybe it's just total crap parts, But my rims on my mtn bike are kinda mangled.. so my brakes aren't as good as I would like them to be.. So I was looking around at alternatives..

Couple of things.

-The condition of your rims don't effect braking performance.
-They have more power if you get good ones and set them up right
-Perform SOOO much better in bad conditions
-Last longer that rim brakes/ exploding rims = no bueno

Disk brakes have the added benefit of getting less muddy, salty, and wet. So if you're an urban warrior, you will still be able to stop on a dime when the 15th f**king cabbie cuts you off, even if you've just ridden through some puddle from hell.

Really useful here in BOS since grinding salt and sand into your rims isn't the best idea...

Disk brakes are great, a lot more grab and aren't affected as much as traditional rim brakes by water and snow.

I've gone over once with my disk brakes, haha. Some car cut me off and the closer I got, the tighter I squeezed and before I knew it, I was going over the bars. It sucked too because the spill broke the bracket on my rear derailer and I had to push it the rest of the way home.

They make disk brakes for bikes? I can see where that might be better.
