I have several flashlights. I found a nice Energizer on clearance at Walmart... It's shock-proof to 10 feet or something along those lines. Nice, bright, standard bulb. 2D, but good. Can focus well to throw light far or spread it well.

I also use a small 2AA Rayovac Xenon flashlight. This little bugger is OUTSTANDING. Provides a really far-throwing light and can be picked up at most Walmarts for like $5-$10. Battery life is great, too.

The newest addition to my flashlight family is the Stanley MaxLife 369 Tripod Flashlight, as seen here: http://www.stanley...+Tripod+Flashlight

This has 6 1-watt LEDs that can be lit up 1, 3, or 6 at a time. You can load 3, 6, or 9 AA batteries into the legs, which also fold out to stand it up, and it has a low battery warning light. All very useful features!

Me goin' legit would be like JarJar on speech therapy.

I'm on Flickr now! My Flickr Stream | I'm about as thick as a Bryk.

Ok, time for some beam shots.

the lights i have here,

1. a 20w mr16 halogen bulb, in a home made head mount, and a 8 amp hour lead aced battery(read brick) used for light panting and for the bike.

2. is my modded UF 606a, running off 2 aa's, this light can also run off 1 cr2 li-on cell(see pic of light in this mode) and is a bit brighter on it, way smaller, and has a run time of about 15 minutes, 1 hour+ on hi mode with 2 aa.

3. the mini mag, running off the same 2 aa's as the 606a, using a new bulb(the one in the tall cap) and focus set to spot.

The camera is locked at 4.0 seconds at 65 feet away from the truck. there was a full moon out, thats why the background looks bright, but the brightness of the lights is about right.

CR2 mode

this one is me using the 20w mr16 light underground

that brick light is pretty badass. If I ever felt the need to photograph a stretch of tunnel in white light, I know what to use now!!

I havent had any problems with my 3D Maglite. It's worked well in photos. I've dropped it a few times and bashed shit with it and it hasn't stopped. It's pretty much waterproof although I've never taken it swimming. Battery life has been pretty awesome (I still bring backup if I know the place will be extra dark or take longer than an hour). The weight really doesn't bother me, I used to carry it literally all the time in my bag and yeah I did feel more safe having a brick of a flashlight in my bag. I live in Toronto, not the worst city, but I know at least 4 people who have been mugged, and myself having nearly been mugged. I carried it all the time because I used to go exploring every time I had more than an hour to blow between classes, so I also don't find it hard to conceal, it fit perfectly in the bottom of my bag, and it's quick to access when I need it. The beam is good, it has excellent throw, in lawrence station attic I could just barely see the entire length of the attic above the platform, so basically the length of 6 subway cars, on a fresh set of batteries.

Plus I'm pretty sure I bought for less than $50 at Canadian Tire, and I can get fresh batteries and bulbs for it really easily, in short notice, from any Canadian Tire along the way to a site.

Yeah. Why throw away money on something you might lose/break/ditch.

I mainly use my 3 watt Led 2D Maglite, good price, good light and 36$ can. I often brig a small spotlight 1'000'000 candles that lasts about 25 min, bought it for 6$ at canadian tire and I always have my petzl led/halogen headlamp.

you did see what prices we where talking about with the nice lights right? for $25 you can get a light that is brighter smaller and has longer run time than you mag light, and it can run on standard AA battery's that you can find anywhere

speaking of such lights i got me a Romisen RC-N3 CREE Q5 a mounth ago and am very happy, shipping was 3 days and i brought it with me caving the day i got it, and almost lost it forever(i dropped it 15 foot down in a boulder field underground and it fell between two massive rocks, with just a bit of the lanyard sticking out) anyhow i love this light, it has a nice throwey beam and a foreword clicky (like a mag light) i think i am going to start recommending this light over the uf 606a just for the fact that i have tried my hardest to kill and failed(throwing the light up in the air as hight as you can spinning is cool looking by the way :p ) and it has a pocket clip and foreword clicky (a bigger deal that it sounds like it is) any how get this light http://www.shining...-N3-CREE-Q5/Detail

I'm looking to get a Inova x5.

Very nice battery life and output, especially for $30.

I use a Husky Tools 3d light (much like a 3d maglite) and a brinkmann led light which really sucks and i don't recommend it (picture below, to further help you avoid the brinkmann)

Good choice. The Inova X5 has the best reputation as being really reliable and really tough. It's a great floodlight, but it really doesn't have good throw. Of course, when you are exploring, flood is much more important than throw anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Sometimes I wonder if my obsession with flashlights led to my interest in Urban Exploration, or conversely, if my
interest in exploration led to my flashlight obsession

Indeed. Its price is very attractive as well, since I'm not willing just yet to drop $100+ on say, a nice SureFire flashlight.

Hmm, I don't know - I won't leave the house without a thrower and a flooding light.

And a headlamp.

And an emergency keyring light.

I was carrying my cheapie LED exploring light with me (3-AAA Wal-Mart flavor). I got really weird looks from my friends who don't know my 'splorin habits when I took a flashlight out of my pocket for the sidewalk areas where the street lights are broken.

Well, we just experienced a blackout in the early evening, when a tree fell on lines somewhere nearby. Quickly grabbed JetBeam Jet III Pro and ST for my wife and myself, threw my three-year-old a Solarforce L2, and my eighteen-month-old a Romisen RC-G2. Immediate crisis stabilised.

Pulled out the big rechargeable fluoro, to more easily get the kids dressed, gave my wife the ZebraLight H50 headlamp so she could better finish what she was doing before the power outage, and then we went for a walk.

Had a chat to the neighbours, who were guiding themselves by mobile phone screens - fortunately I had my other L2, plus a couple of spare lights in my pocket. Around the neighbourhood we roamed, dazzling beams blinding oncoming traffic and signalling aircraft.

In the end, the outage only lasted about an hour. But that hour was the validation of my apparent lighting fetish. An hour of glory. And to those who disparagingly claimed I was crazy, I say:

Who's crazy now?

WHO'S CRAZY NOW??!!

Bwahahaha! I know the feeling. A few months ago we had a power outage when a squirrel somehow managed to get fried in a transformer. I hung a lantern from my ceiling, and set up a whole plethora of lights around my apartment. My neighbors who could see my place still lit up, actually asked me how I still had power on when nobody else on the street did, haha.
