This thread has reviews of a whole heap of budget lights:
http://www.candlep...hread.php?t=199062

If you find the RC-N3 review in there (the 606A is there too!), there's a runtime chart in with the photos. Actually, that's the review that had me buy the RC-N3 in the first place!

Thanks for the link, I'll read it over before ordering my minimag replacement.

I went ahead and bought my Surefire G2L-BK, which is more than sufficient for now. It's significantly brighter than my 4D incandescent. The bezel and lamp is the same as the one in the OP's post, but the G2 lacks the clicky tailcap and is slightly cheaper. It's also waterproof.

It's rated 80 lumens on fresh batteries, 40 lumens after 3.8 hours, and usable light ( > 1 lumen) for 12 hours.

The light output is really white, unlike the blue tint I expect from LED's or the yellow tint of incandescents.

Not bad for $55 (I had a coupon, original price is $65).

*opens a can of worms*

The thing is if you are going to get in to RCR or CR123's. You may as well get a nice Q5 2x123 light, the 606 is great for an aa light, but if you getting the 123 battery's there are better lights out there.

or get the 606A and mod the it after you start to think you need a 20 mode q5 AA blinding flashlight

(posted same time as above) just for your info my 606 kill's my friends g2 ;p

Count me as another Maglite user, currently a AA LED model, usually with another AA incandescent in my bag as a backup.

In addition to that I also usually have a Petzl Tikka XP headtorch strapped to my head. Really just for convenience and ease of use - I can light up what I am doing while still having both hands available to work, and no faffing about balancing torches where they still light what I want.

Generally The headtorch is set to a wide spill, so it illuminates the area immediately around me so I can see where I am going, then one of the Mags with a tighter beam for scanning things further away.

I would love to replace the LED Mag with a Fenix though, The L1D looks to be a fantastic alternative to the Mag, and also being smaller and brighter. The only downside is there is no focussable beam, which I could live with used alongside the headtorch.

Yah, I rock a 4D maglight for tunnels and drains. It's plenty bright, water tight, solid as hell. For normal abandonment's I take a 2D light but I've been meaning to get something smaller like a 2AA one.

I also need something for photography. Something brighter and preferably minus the weird off color dark/bright spot in the center of the beam.

Oh with the 4D mag, I don't know if I'm going crazy or what, but since I've bought it I don't think I've changed the batteries in over 8 hours of usage. I don't know if it makes a difference but I unload the batteries when not in use. That seems like a lot to me, maybe I just don't remember changing the batteries one time. Every time I use it I always expect it to die, but it never does. I'm getting tired of lugging around backup batteries that I don't need.

I modded them 88 cent flashlights with LEDs (green, red, or yellow) the red LEDs are great for draining if my primary light craps out... Read Cave Clan's "approach.doc" for Modding flashlights.

I've had good luck with a handful of lights.
My primary is a $15 energizer Wal-mart head lamp, it has flood, distance, combo, and red, lasts forever. in 2 years I've changed the batteries 3 times? and I use it semi-frequently (10-15 (maybe more, I lost count) expos and then power outages, night, etc).
I have a photon fusion head lamp, it's nice, but doesn't have the throw of the energizer, and it cost about 3x as much.
I carry a 6watt 3-AAA Dorcy light with battery indicator. Has about 6 hour runtime, bright as all get out (lights a room better then a mag). It cost about $60, but it's solid and I take it everywhere, superb light.
I've taken to carrying 3-d mag as well, get this, after being chased by stoners, out of a drain. I'm glad as I had it even though I didn't use it, but I would not hesitate to use it as a weapon if I got in a spot that needed it, hence why I carry other lights (in the event I break or drop the mag). It also has excellent throw, and isn't too bad to carry (I usually tuck it under my belt). I take it to any sketchy areas, and like I said, stuff happens from time to time; in response to the post earlier about carrying mags as weapons.

My advice to the new guys (and gals): take a few lights, have backups, be prepared to spend a few bucks, be prepared to break things (I dropped my camera while running from said stoners, shutter button is a paper clip for now), and spend money on lights. I've read enough stories of people's lights failing, and it doesn't sound like fun.

Apologies for writing the essay, but this is supposed to be helpful (I hope)

Good luck out there!

My WF-606A with a Q5 just came. While it's a good 50% brighter and considerably more focused than the surefire, I've still got to say the surefire is more practical. After 45 minutes of use, the drop in the surefire's output is negligible, while the WF-606A will have already dimmed significantly.

While the cree AA lights may have great throw and brightness, I really can't recommend them as a primary light source.

The 606A is about as bright as it gets for budget-priced light on AA batteries, though, and you sacrifice runtime to get that. It really sucks those batteries dry. A slightly less-bright alternative, like a Romisen RC-I3 will last a few hours.

Fenix make good lights. From memory, the L1D and L2D have the same head, which means you can buy a longer body tube, and use it with 2AA batteries instead, and have a brighter result. The only downside of the Fenix range is the price - you get a quality light, but you pay for it.

If the cost isn't an issue, though, just get it (or the L2D).

I've switched to the Streamlight Strion for everyday carry (and as a back up explorer) and the Streamlight SL-20X® LED for my main exploration light.

My friends and I have been using the Smith & Wesson flashlights, they are lightweight, inexpensive and best part of all, they come built in with both two red LED's or two blue or green LED's. I love the red light because it doesn't completely kill your night vision, they also come equipped with 8 more white LED's, and a nice little belt carrying case. We also try to carry a variety of lights with us. My friend Lance likes his crank flashlight (one of the cheap ones that you have to spin a crank to charge it and it stays lit for a long time) it doesn't use batteries but is noisy, and we carry several good old fashioned mag lights.

I use a North-Star beta LED with 1W as my main flashlight and i'm very happy with it. It's waterproof, beam throw is quite long and the construction made of aeronautical aluminum feels very solid.
As a backup i always carry in my backpack a maglite 3D with xenon bulb. Never really was forced to use it, since the north-star works very well, but it's useful sometimes for lightpainting.

I like the MX-993/U made by Fulton. It's apparently approved by the U.S Department of Mines.

It's waterproof, has a ring that I can use to clip onto my belt, isn't very heavy or big (2 inches wide by 7 inches long), and has a collection of clear and red lenses in a compartment in the base. I can get the bulbs pretty cheap and it takes 2 D-Cell batteries. Under the spring battery contact on the bottom is a space for a spare bulb.

The only difference between mine and the one here is that mine doesn't have a switch guard.

I use Mags...but I also carry a Streamlight Survivor Light LED. At 45 Lumens it's not the brightest, but it's adequate and it's good on batteries. The non-rechargeable version is about $40. It's also intrinsically safe. I've used it as a Firefighter and like them very much. I just clip it to my coat/jacket/belt for easy of carry.

Today I had a chance to test Pelican 7060 LED flashlight.

I have to say I was very impressed, and now I just have to get one for me.

Facts like 130 lumens, rechargeable lithium ion battery with 1,5 hr burn time and low weight only 290 grams kind of speak for themselves.

I think the coolest thing that I have been using other than my mags and my red/white Smith $ Wesson lights is my head light that attaches the the brim of a hat, I got it at Walmart for about $10.00 and I got both a white LED one, and a Black light one . They are the coolest things, and the black light is especially cool if you are in places that has a lot of graffiti, sometimes it makes the paint glow and was also bring out colors on the wall that I couldn't have seen without it. And some other... less pleasant stuff as well . But all in all, they are pretty neat to have as a just in case.
