I don't care if he's a new member or not. All I'm saying is that the odds of having to fend off some maniac with a maglite are about as slim as they come. I've never heard of anything like this happening to anyone here, have you? Feel free to find me a post or two where an explorer's been attacked by someone (who isn't a security guard) while exploring.

If you want to carry an oversized and inferior flashlight around with you because you think that's a situation you're likely to encounter, then I don't know what to say other than that I feel sorry for you.

I carry a 2 D Cell mag with me, but nor for defence. I prefer it for light painting. All the guy was saying was that "IF" in need, it could double as a defensive tool...He is correct. He never once mentioned that he may HAVE to use it, he was just stating another use. And I agree with him.

I love my maglite, and it could kick any surefire of the same price range in any category except size/weight. Seriously, stock mag's are not all that great. They are only good for 2 things... weapon & battery capacity. Throw one of these in:

http://www.flashli...eviews/everled.htm

with some good batteries and you're good to go for a while. Replace other components as accordingly if you want to fix other problems with it. Either way it's still less than another flashlight of the quality.

As far as using it for defense... it's mostly for show. However, if you do have to use it, do you know how? the solid 1/2 at the back of the light is what to hit with... but don't hit in the head with full force. It's more lethal than a police baton, and you could find yourself with someone who doesn't get up again. Hit the elbows, knees, or collar bones, and I can guarantee that whoever's fucking with you will stop immediately.

VERY cool site!! I am gonna order one for my MAG! Thanks for the info!

I also fitted the flashlight with a metal reflector (to remove those pesky spots from the plastic one with a orange peel reflector) and then I used a dome lens to refocus the beam. When it was all put together though, the beam was quite strange. See, the dome was made to work with another LED home kit, and not with the side-emitting LED that I bought, so it reacted strange. At first I didn't like it, because of the obvious different rings, and the darker ring in the middle. Then after a while and using it outside, I really liked it. It seems to split the beam into this really bright spot good for throwing, and then is scatters out light from a ~150 degree field into an almost 180 degree pattern if it's focused correctly. I do now enjoy it, but I do not suggest it for being 'stealthy', as first off it's big, and secondly it has a wide field. But overall I diffidently like it, and cannot wait to try it own with the reflector in a drain.

Ok have you ever had 900 lumen's strobing in your face? just so you know you are not going to be able to see afterwards, and it will not kill anyone, this can not to said for the big mag's.

And i think that a good flash in the face along with a "GET ON THE GROUND NOW!" is preferable to trying ( repeat ) TRYING to beat someone in the head with a 2 foot long stick.

And just for comparison have a look at this site http://www.talkaud...hread.php?t=240713 . it has a good flash light review (note the brightest light here puts out only about 120 lumen's the Ultrafire WF606A. I am a proud owner of one, and i have sense moded it to put out over 200 lumen's)

If you are looking for the 900 lumen light i was talking about have a look here http://www.kaidoma...l.aspx?TranID=4863

Surefire all the way. Top quality and excellent customer service. It's not the only company producing worthwhile flashlights out there, but it's what I prefer. Most people downplay the importance of a good, dependable flashlight, or either have never been in a situation where a quality light was necessary.

And as I've posted in the past, using many commercial flashlights in a defensive manner can render them useless for illumination after the fact. Something to think about if you're going to need light after your encounter.

Anything with a lamp that gives off visible light from a self-contained battery source beats a UE worm who shows up to UE sites without ANY flashlight.

If you lightpaint, or do long exposures, what (if any) do you use to get a steady light source if there is none? I personally just made a mount to attach various flashlights to a tripod just yesterday.

I started with a 4D mag, and never had any complaints other than it being hard to conceal. There is a spare bulb in the base, and the construction is solid. I did a bit of tunneling with it and I found it to be plenty bright, although I was not taking pictures. I used that flashlight as a hammer for about two years before I finally broke down and bought an actual hammer. It never once broke a bulb.

There are handlebar mounts that will attach to tripods with a minimum of fuss, assuming you're not trying to attach a d-cell maglite

a rubber connector and hose clamps, mounted to a bolt-on metal strap. Yay for cheap, yet good designs!

I use my little LED maglite that i use for work most of the time, but i also have a 120lumen Dorcy one that works pretty awesome.

Edit: Anyone have any recommendations on something good for light painting in particular, while we are on the subject of flashlights? Brands and things like that which you find work well? Or basically just kinda pick a flashlight and go at it?

In all honesty, selecting a flashlight is very much comparable to selecting shoes: no two people are going to have the same EXACT model/brand of light (unless its just a standard design light like a mag-light)

I prefer the Brinkmann headlamps that 10 bux gets you at Walmart because they're easy to work on and at the price point that they are at, they are almost disposable in a sense. They also work on AAAs which means one more thing to carry in w/ you, but still smaller than a mag-light and associated stuff. I also carry a 6v lantern as a backup to the headlamp, and a double backup light is a simple 2aa flashlight that doesn't even cost a dollar...

Yes you could say that, i for one where good hiking boot when UE'ing, but i bet some of you out there where $4 flip flops, even at the risk of getting bit by a rat getting rabies and dieing(*looks at maglight guys* >.> )

I for one think that if you can get something thats much brighter(on the order of 10 times brightr) at the same price you should use it, but anyhow.

For light panting, what i would do it get a MR16 flood halogen bulb mount it using something like this http://www.instruc...Halogen-Bike-Light an 6 amp hour battery will give you about 3 hours of run time with about 300 or 400 lumen's( AA mag puts out 20 lumen's FYI). i used to use a set up like this for my bike, but don't use it anymore now that i have my LED light( because of size and weight) it will give you very nice light and only cost about $30.

Until recently I used a Brinkmann 2D-Cell LED (maglight clone) and a 2-AA Cell LED maglight.

But within the next three weeks I'm going to replace the 2D-Cell with a Surefire G2 LED, and I'll eventually replace the minimag with an UltraFire WF-606A.

While I love big maglights, they just aren't portable enough.

If you're going to go with the Surefire G2, which runs on CR123As (doesn't it?), you might consider the Romisen RC-N3 instead of the Ultrafire WF-606A. Nothing against the very good 606A, but the RC-N3 has the advantage of optionally running on a single CR123A cell, instead of 2AAs, by removing a barrel segment.

I have both, and I like the Romisen better. I do mainly use it in CR123A mode, though, not AA, and in AA mode it isn't as bright as the 606A. It does last longer, though.

Oh, even better - one online store (www.shiningbeam.com) sells a CREE Q5 version of the RC-N3, which will be significantly brighter. I'd definitely get that

Almost all surefires run on CR123As.

Any idea what the runtime is on it? Even though it's LED, I can't imagine anything lasting long on a single CR123A.

I still think I'm going to go with the 606A (or just get both, you can always use an extra torch). Since I generally carry everything from AA's to 9v's with me (I'm a bit of a gadget person), the battery type isn't something I consider.
