| | | ^^^ To the best of my knowledge, this is what happened: About 35 years ago the owner's now deceased husband tried to develop the property. I don't know if his plan involved destroying the building. The city said no to his plans, he said fine, be that way. He then engineered in his will that the family promise to never develop or sell the property. The old bat and kids, (one or more who live in Hollywood area) have honored his spiteful request. The city may have blown it, then, and in their lack of action of the last few years, weak heritage laws etc. I'm all for owner's rights, but there are exceptions. It's pathetic that the owners couldn't give a damn about the benefit to the city, and it's inhabitants, of their buildings. This moronic stubbornness, and (as bad) incompetence of the city to work with the owners sooner is why the buildings have suffered considerable demolition by neglect. If the city and heritage department had offered tax incentives, and encouraged restoration or stabilization years ago, the situation would not be so critical now. As the article says, it's not too far gone to realistically repair. The Janion in particular. Why should the city give tax or other incentives?: Because this is an exceptional case, and they failed to work with the owner years ago, and failed to get enforcement to protect the building. Skillful negotiation and mediation could have resolved this long ago. Now we hear b.s. in favor of tearing it down, in the form of it, the Janion being assessed at a value of *11,000. This leads idiots with no heritage respect to claim 'it's worthless'. Pardon my rant, have been a fan of that building for years. *stated in a previous TC article.

| | | Hmm, thanks for the info Lien. Reminds me of what is presently happening around the skid row of Vancouver. A developer or building owner will float a re-development proposal, if it doesn't involve housing every homeless person wandering the streets of Vancouver, then it gets nixed by the City. Community "advocates" circle the wagons and start to bitch and complain (more free lunches, etc) so the owner is forced to throw up his hands and go work on another project. In the mean time, his boarded up building just begins to decay, really amazing how fast it starts to happen, actually. The end result is, the City has one less heritage building, and the developer will still realize the true value which is, of course, the land - it just takes a little longer. The really sad part is that the City has all the tools it needs to allow some really good projects to go ahead on heritage buildings. With bonus density allowances, good stuff can happen, win win for everyone. Imagine if the same thing happened 35 years ago when whoever it was floated their plan for Gastown, which at the time, was loaded with derelict historic buildings and old warehouses. Instead of vibrant homes, restaurants, clubs and shops, you would have another Dowtown East Side ghetto. Guess it's all about timing. More (or less) happen during Civic election years depending on the flavor of the day.

| | | Posted by timbits Good evening/morning/whatever time of day it is where you are. So I have to say at first I thought the idea of having to wait 7 days before i could post or send a pm was stupid. But took me that long to read this post. Their are a few parts that I think we all could of done with out, but too late now. Well I guess I'll start with my main question kk, Is there anyway that people can see the movie you made? as i was unable to make it to the showings. Tim
| Hey there and welcome to the show. Yes...it's a show. A display. Some of the characters are, sadly, no longer with us. They are missed. They provided a much-needed blast of unintelligible bullshit so as to reign in the rest of us to more serious matters, viz a viz Tunnels in Victoria™. Disregard yellow_wallpaper's remarks re: lube. It won't be necessary. I have been informed (by the leader of the GCG crew, no less) that a couple of the entry points through which we gained...um, entry...have been sealed. They are gone now, and are themselves sadly missed. You can thank the rank fools/amateurs who ventured forth unaccustomed to The Dangers That Be, and generally fucked things up for those who know better. In other words, no amount of lube will make an access easy. But what's done is done, and it's time to move on anyway. The film Under the Garden City may be screened in the coming months. If there is enough local interest, it may get a screening sooner rather than later. As for the parts you feel could have been avoided/left out/deleted, all these serve as reminders of what was, and what shall (hopefully) never be again. Again, welcome. Enjoy the ride. KK

| | | Posted by G to the Race I've got a full run of 5100 and there's a story about the tunnels in one of them. Just when they are to enter the tunnels, it ends though! I haven't read this thread but going from the original question, have we ever determined the tunnels exist? And, evidently Satanism (LOL!) went on in the tunnels, true or false?
| Tanuki wrote that piece. It has been determined that there are, in fact, tunnels under Victoria. We've been in them, through them, around them, and we've recorded them variously for a wild little documentary called, oddly enough, Under the Garden City.

| | | not really tunnel related, but i didn't think this warranted its own topic. Besides, it is somewhat of a secret. I know someone who has keys for certain parts of the old hospital in Victoria. Yesterday I had an impromptu tour of the kitchens - old and new(er). The old kitchen was abandoned a decade ago and remains empty, tucked away in obscurity with its beautiful high ceilings and tiles. If the prep tables and ovens weren't missing it would be like stepping back 95 years. The doors and walk in freezers are framed with untouched finished oak. Original iron hardware waits, heavy and cold. The room has two walls of windows but surrounding buildings and dusk obstruct sunlight from flooding the room. The new kitchen is larger and tiled as well, but lacks the same charm. Maybe it’s the lower ceilings, or just the fact the paint doesn’t release the same eerie, empty glow I love.
cheers

| | | The Janion Must Be Preserved to protect the true reason why it was constructed at that peticular location ,, let us ask ourselves about the true reason why it has been preserved all these years ,, let us wonder why all the homeless hang around its welcoming front ,, If it is torn down , will we be ripping out the very soul that this garden city was based on ?
