The room you found out at York Redoubt is the generator room for the search lights from WWI. The light emplacement is down along the shore past the WWII light emplacements towards Halifax. They put the cinder block wall and door in during the stabilization work that was done in the mid 90's. That whole area was previously fenced off and the archway had large wooden doors.

I looked inside it with my big spotlight... There are still some large objects in there.

Just concrete blocks, nothing that looks like generators. There's an air vent on top of the little hill too, by the fence.

BTW: Chandelle, where on Ogilvie were those photos taken from? Which part of the building I mean.

Those are taken from the front door of the main structure (as soon as you walk through the gates). It's the building with the "KEEP OFF" sign posted.
The bottom of the door is rusting away, so I stuck my camera in as best as possible.

Clearly there's stairs, and a doorway that goes in the direction of the shoreline ... I'm new to this, so I don't have any speculations as to what my pictures show. Any ideas?

Sounds like that doorway may lead into a bunker or tunnel of some sort. I don't know the exact history of that fort, so it's hard to say what it might be for. As for Cambridge battery, I just found out that it was abandoned before the First World War had even started.

Well, the stairs in my photo look like they lead to the upper level of the structure, which would make sense ...

It's the doorway just beside the staircase that has me interested. I would venture to say that the structure extends underneath the hills around the building.

Me and Plague went up there earlier this evening, and though we couldn't get our lights in there enough to see around, we did venture to the back of the building, and noticed that there's a wrap-around range spotter window (same kind as the BCP at York Redoubt). The doorway probably goes beneath the spotting room.

I found this about Cambridge Battery on GE:

During the American Civil War there was much new activity in the park. Soldiers who often had to be self-reliant were aided by fort improvements and in august 5th, 1862 a new fort/battery was started. This was to have both above and below ground structures. Located midway between the Martello tower and the old Northwest Arm emplacements. It was completed in 1868 and fully manned with living accommodations. The large guns could defend the Harbour entrance and the Northwest Arm.
In 1872, F.C. underwent renovations. 18 Ton cannons replaced 12-ton guns and large numbers of military personnel were camped around the Fort. In 1888, concrete reinforcements with underground rooms, tunnels and an outdoor rifle range were all in place. Park visitors did not venture too close.
In 1905, troops began to return to England and withdraw from the park. However, during WWI, the battery continued to be manned and used. In 1936, a decisions was made to leave Cambridge Battery. Due to the condition of the buildings the Park Commission decided not to take over the area unless there was a clean up and dangerous features taken care of. Signs were posted and areas chained off. WWII saw some rise but after the war, the status of the Battery continued anew and debate increased. In 1951, it was decided to demolish some of the buildings of the battery as a demolition exercise. On November 18th, the park closed and explosions rang out. The area remained a mess for the next 8 or 9 years. Finally the park commission, frustrated by the lack of response from Ottawa, began the clean up. By the early 1960's, the 3 forts and batteries were taken over by Canadian Historic sites. Today the area is used for picnics, Shakespeare by the Sea performances and quiet recreation of park visitors, both 2 and 4 footed.

The building that you are talking about at Fort Ogilvie was the battery command post. I believe that it dates from the early 1900's update to the fort. It consists of 6 rooms on 2 levels the largest being the observation gallery on the upper level. The extents of the structure are what you can see when standing on the roof. I have a few pics which I've included of the interior. Pic 1 is the top of the stairs. Pic 2 shows the mount for the range finder. Pic 3 is another shot of the observation gallery and Pic 4 is one of the rooms on the upper level.

How'd you get these pics? When Plague and I were up there Saturday, the only opening we saw was the rusted out part of the front door, which was barely enough room to get a flashlight into, let alone a camera.
