Slacking in Portland

So I've been in portland for nearly a year now and have hardly done any ue. Mostly because I've been working a lot and haven't had a great deal of time, but also because everything is different here and I just don't know what to look for. Anyone have any suggestions for a couple of daytrip locations? I'm particularly interested in old architecture, anything severely run down and being reclaim by nature. Thanks for any leads.

Really cool old concrete structure off Hwy 30 next to the Williamette River, just NW of Portland. Unsure of the access. Just saw it one day while attending a cousins wedding. It sure is hard to miss from the hwy.

Is that the one near the college? If it is, I think I've been to it, just didn't go inside because there were taggers there that day.

I don't know where the college is, sorry. It's very detailed architecturally, but it's all cast concrete, I think. It looked very secured and was behind a chainlink fence. my wife was fascinated by it because it looked like an old school building.

If you're talking about the building on Hwy 30 right next to the St. John's bridge, that's the Portland Gasworks. It's on Army Corps of Engineers property and has a 24 hour guard in a shack right next to the building. It's also a Superfund site and is badly contaminated, inside and out.

You can get in, but it's not easy. It's definitely one of the coolest looking buildings I've ever seen.
