Looking for people in Juneau or close by

Hello people. I am moving to Alaska for the summer season at least and would like to meet up with like minded local people (if any). You can see my posts and photos of explored places in the southern forums to prove that I have been doing this for a while. Thank you for your time guys.

Are you moving to the Anchorage area or just the Southeast?

Oh, ok. I live in Anchorage. I'm just waiting for the snow to melt, although I could go exploring now. Considering this is my first time, I'll probably want top start out when evverything is dry and more easily accessable.

Im pretty ignorant when it comes to Alaska but im assuming that is quite a ways from us? The whole Juneau not having a highway that gets to other cities is kind of a dampener...especially since i dont want to leave my motorcycle behind

I'm sure Alaska has a great ferry system which will allow you to get around. As far as sites in Alaska I believe there's a plethora of military sites around the state.

never know until you go

I grew up just outside Juneau. There's a surprising amount to explore around there, as well as in other small Southeast towns. I'll PM you with some more info.

The ferries are convenient but really overpriced, and they take a while to get anywhere useful. Cheapest option is to go with a bike and no stateroom, just camp on the back deck if it's an overnight trip or sleep in a chair if it's shorter. For most Southeast Alaska towns you don't need more than a bike to see the sites, and it's cheaper than a car or even a motorcycle. For smaller towns or rural areas that aren't on the ferry system you can call around to bush airlines and ask about "Seat Fare" on pre-scheduled trips, it's cheaper than chartering a plane. If you want to see cool rural abandonements like mines and canneries you should look into getting a small boat (16ft Lund or larger with at least a 25hp outboard and a backup).

I'm moving up to Fairbanks in about six months. Going to be attending UAF. I went to the open house last Friday, and I also scoped out some places to explore when I settle in up there.

Yeah Fairbanks is good too, lots of dredges and abandoned mine camps. The mines tend to have intact buildings and be pretty much open to anyone (I've run into photographers, people walking their dogs, and in one case a bunch of state surveyors who were like "we don't give a shit if you're exploring, just don't die". ). Intact tunnels are more rare due to the ground conditions, but I can probably think of a few... I think there's some abandoned mid-rise hotels downtown as well, but security is variable.

There's also lots of steam tunnel networks, just watch out for the ones on the military bases since I heard they started securing those.

I'm already starting to plan trips to Buckner and the Summit and Bay missle sites. Just want the snow to melt and needing to buy a respirator. I hear theres some gates along the road to summit Site. Any good ways to avoid them save for walking?

I've never walked in on the road to Summit, I usually went straight up the mountain or up zigzag paths. I've seen other people up there hiking around or walking dogs and stuff right by the buildings, and I've had a military truck drive past me without stopping, so I don't think anyone really cares. The fences by the launch complex are all open and have huge holes, and I can't remember if there's even any warning signs other than the old ones on the gate.

There's some active radio stuff at the top that has locks and signs, and it's possible you'll meet someone installing or repairing a repeater (that's probably the truck that passed me). The military also uses the place for training exercises occasionally, so don't go if you see dudes running around shooting at stuff. Keep a close eye on the ground too, those exercises often leave fun trash behind!

Also, hold your breath in the ICC tunnels!

Bay is allright, but nowhere near as good as Summit since its spent 30 years as a redneck target range and junked car demolition derby.

I just returned from exploring the base. We parked at the Arctic Valley ski area and walked right up to the launch complex. There were still some pretty good sized snow drifts blocking entrances to the bunkers, so we went around the back. Most of the basements were flooded, although we acessed the second one without problems. There's a fence around the IFC parimeter, complete with "U.S Mlitary property, no Exploring" signs. We simply found a gap in the gate and slipped through. I didn't get to see all of the IFC, but I'm going back when there's a lot less snow.

I'm gonna hit up the IFC area sometime in July or August when I'm home for the summer. Been meaning to do it for a long time. Probably will check out the bunkers too with my new camera

A mid-summer trip will also be good cause all of the snow and meltwater should be gone.
