These numbers signify something important. It wasn't that long ago this thread was edging towards 1000 posts. And now... Amazing.

A recent look at certain archival photos revealed something I had missed before. That building now torn down, on Wharf street, above the famous bricked over entrance, was owned by... The Bay.

The logic or possibility they had a tunnel to bring the pelts and World Famous Rainbow Blankies from the S.S. Beaver (or similar vessel) to the store, via a tunnel seems very dam likely. Therefore, I highly suspect the previous allusions to tunnels from the Bay building to the harbor are true.

And various side tunnels perhaps? We already know there is a very old conduit further out of town, that covers a longer distance, and although built (primarily?) for the transport of excess water, exists. So why not a shorter one from the Bay to the Inner Harbor? I believe there will be a significant discovery before the end of the summer.

Actually, my suspicion is that that entrance extends only so far, but branches left and right down Warf St. On the other hand, that entrance becomes point A on a straight line all the way up Bastion Sq. to the front doors of the new Bay Center.

But if you'll remember the recon we did (A.Lien, JPeterman and I) back several months ago, where we persuaded the lithe Peterman to wiggle through/around a fence/gate-type thingy, and when we all managed to get through (me being not nearly as lithe as JPeterman...A.Lien will speak for himself), we discovered a large door blocked off by old oil tanks, debris, etc. and some rather unpleasant thorny foliage. We know what street that is, and if we draw a straight line from THAT door, we may note that it eventually comes in line with the that 'very old brick building' we visited some months earlier...the one with all the needles, and the basement with the patched-over wall...I think there was a jail cell in it as well...and that THIS building path continues down to our beloved Janion before dog-legging towards the old Bay warehouse.

Keeping in mind it was all generally rough shoreline back in the day. And keeping in mind that it is all generally held up/together by a massive retaining wall.

We should check out that 'end-of-the-line' door again soon.

I agree, it likely jogs a few times before getting to the Bay, if it does go that far.

That "end of the line" thing is weird. It starts off as a large room. You probably remember, the photos J.P. snapped don't show an end wall, just inky darkness. Too bad the door won't open more than a few inches. We should get a light, camera, and hydraulic ram in there. I bet it joins up to the needle house.

Very interesting, I wonder how big the space is, and if it joins to anything else. That is, if it really exists or hasn't been filled in.

Concerning the Monday Magazine letter...I contacted the author to try to get more information. The original letter is from September 10th, 1960 (maybe 1966) in the Financial Post. The Financial Post reprinted the letter from the Victoria Daily Colonist from an earlier (unspecified) date.

I also got the comment, "There is a set of ground level steel doors with an air vent near them beside the sidewalk on the...side...just up the hill from [Good-looking town].

Interesting...

I wanted to make a quick post about the current state of UE in Victoria. As most of you know there isn't really a solid group or club of "urban explorers" in Victoria. There is loosely the G.C.G. (Garden City Gardeners). Which consist/ed of KK, Tanuki, A. Lien, and myself. But this was more of a loosely defined connection between a few of the explorers. Other cities like Toronto and Vancouver have the UE Cobras or the UAMC, but Victoria has always (by my understanding) been a loose network of people all doing their own thing. There WAS a bunch of open to all group meeting done by the GCG last summer, but it resulted it A LOT of dodgy figures, graffiti artists (which I don't have any problems with UNLESS your spraying in beautiful unscathed tunnels!).

I would be interested in rekindling somewhat of a monthly gathering at our traditional stomping grounds. QV's!!! If anyone could write here or message me to put forth their suggestions and interests in this I would greatly appreciate it. Of course out of safety, discreetness and such, everyone would have input on who would be able to attend (after the initial meet n greet). This wouldnt be a me-and-my-two-best-friends-are-coming-along-because-they-won't-tell-anyone sort of thing. More of a safe place to trade information/stories and go on communual excursions. Since last time, people from the forums would bring a small group of their favourite pals along....I suggest that only well established forum posters /contributors attend

You will feel much better about the find ( I know I have previously ) when the exact location isnt handed to you on a plate. I know this sounds cheesey but anyone can find any of these places (which is obvious) The payoff and the value of any underground space is better understood if you have found it yourself.

I know for me, the appreciation and somewhat of a wierd like *This is something VERY precious and mysterious thing that should be communally protected and respected* feeling came over me. But now that 1 or 2 people has become a handfull and a handfull has become a small bunch the inevitable fate of quite a few spots will soon face vandalism and being sealing via the ever expanding pyramid of knowledge bestowed upon the increasing few.

Lets get together.

Yours truly,
J Peterman.

Hello people, I have been reading this thread for a while now and Im thoroughly enjoying the photos posted by explorers of Victoria. I was born and raised here and have always heard stories of tunnels under the city but never saw any evidence of them, until now. Its rather exciting to know these secret places lie just beneath my feet.
I wanted to find something to contribute to this forum so I went on a photo expedition in a basement of an old building on Government Street, mainly to look for clues to blocked off tunnel entrances. Apparently the building was used in the past as a bawdy house, or a dance hall as they were called at the time. Unfortunately the most intriguing room was behind a recently locked door, and I couldnt find the holder of the key. I got some good photos nonetheless, and I will post some later when I have access to them.
Other than that, keep exploring! Im happy to have any clues regarding entrances to hidden places. and again, I love the photos!

Welcome! Meliciouscat. Glad to have you on board

Tonight I am setting out to investigate a couple of underground conduits which are projects that have been sitting on the backburner for about six months. But tonight finally I've got the chance to take a look at these suckers. Hopefully I will be encountering a couple of small but lengthy virgin tunnels near the downtown core.

I will post a field report after the excursion, hopefully with some good snapshots. I'm going stag tonight so wish me luck with my safety as well as my findings. Theres not really many people (in my knowledge) who are willing to spend hours scowering around with me to find the good stuff. Instead, the case is often just "Where is this tunnel?" Which is really too bad because as I've said, the payoff is so greatly immense after putting in the hardwork and elbow grease.

I'm looking for anyone who would be willing to check some really nitty-gritty places, like interesting backbreakers and such. Let me know if you want to go on some adventures.

JP

Here are photos of my basement excursion, of which there are many large files, so I put them in my photobucket account.

http://s86.photobu...ousFilth/basement/

The back room, with the cistern, is nearest the sidewalk on Government Street. Not being tall enough to look over the top, I had to lift the camera and aim to get a shot.

Last night I left in search of a tunnel VERY nearby one of the pictures from my previous post. While scoping around the intersection of interest I saw a guy wearing gumboots and checking out spots on the ground who was hovering around the same intersection, kitty-corner to me.

JP "Hey are you looking for something?"
Guy "Ooh um ya I'm investigating tunnels under the city *points to gumboots*
JP "Me too, haha are you on the UER forums?"
Guy "Yeah I'm Amadeus from the site, haven't posted yet just lurking for now"
JP "You have boots on too were you planning on trying to get in aswell?"
Amadeus "Yeah do you have a way in?"
JP "I have a few ideas."

Or something like that....

After searching for hours for a probably entrance we decided we needed to do some more snooping in the archives to find this one, so we set off to check out another unexplored lead. And so ensued an exploration of epic proportions and perils...

After checking out a series of possible entrances we zeroed in on the most likely. It is in a fairly busy spot but we managed to time it perfectly so that there was no cars around when we dropped into what we later named the Cook Street Chasm.

Immediately after dropping in we found ourselves standing atop a steep staircase/waterfall (which is the same style as the ones in the Burrow but far steeper). At the bottom we began to traverse a backbreaker which was rich in character, some of the thickets roots I've ever seen burst out of the brick walls....absolutely amazing. As well, for this first portion the floor is extremely soft, it sucked our boots right in like quicksand. Further on we began to detect an extremely strong odour which smelled like heavy car exhaust, very strange because it is only present in one small portion of the conduit. As we continued on, the ceiling dropped to about 50% of the original height. After crawling in an pushup-stance (as to not get our frontsides wet) under several large intrusive pipes which crossed our path, we decided to turn back. This tunnel yielded awesome aesthetics, and was worth the quads afterwards

The Cook Street Chasm. Bon appetite!

...pretty drains...
