| | | Its probably that highly inaccurate map of the UW tunnels that's circulating around the Internet. They would probably be too hot to check out, because its so cold out it takes a lot more steam to heat the buildings. Anyways, I've heard that there's motion detectors and cameras down there. Not to mention the 24/7 staff at the physical plant or the university's privet police force. So I would highly suggest staying away from any Steam Tunnels located in the pacific Northwest. | | | actually, according to my source, who is a confirmed apprentice steam engineer, the map isnt the highly inaccurate one, and there are only cameras in parts of it, even less motion detectors. the 24/7 staff, however, he told me to watch out for. i am going to ask him for a map with camera and motion detector locations, places to hide, etc.

| | | If your contact can provide you with the locations of motion sensors and the like, have them provide you with the locations of gates and doors and their status (locked/unlocked). That's *much* more important, IMO. My preference when tunneling is to take short trips between two points and to avoid having to retrace my steps. You need to know where the obstacles are more than you need to know where the sensors and hiding places are. Ideally, you won't be in one place long enough for that stuff to matter. The UW tunnels are multi-level and some parts of the system are very deep underground. The maps don't often show this. By contrast, the tunnels at WSU and many other places are shallow, maybe only a foot or so beneath the sidewalks, and there are manholes everywhere from which to bail out should you sense trouble. At UW, on the other hand, you are "committed" once you are into the lower levels of the tunnel system and will be easy prey for security if spotted. So plan your trip. Don't just "go down", or you may be "taken down" Cheers, MoleNet94

| | | You gotta have the keys or be really good at picking locks. UW is serious about keeping their students out of the tunnels. There aren't any unlocked hatches or the like. You have to have keys. The only unlocked hatches can only be opened from underneath. The school doesn't want to be liable for students injuries as a result negligence. My suggestion would be to get a tour or get a job at the physical plant. -Tom

| | | I just thought I would point out... noticing your age, that if you do get caught down in the steam tunnels the UW is extremely strict. It's a FELONY trespass (Think terrorists) And it also means that you will not, ever, be allowed to go to the UW school or any affiliated with it in your future should you decide to pursue a secondary education.

Well, sure. That's not saying anything new. UE is littered with opportunities to be taken out of context and to look bad. If you can't fool yourself into thinking you won't be caught, you're playing the wrong game. That's why, IMO, it's pointless to be thinking about "hiding places", etc. That's just a "losing attitude" Cheers, MoleNet94

| | | Actually an aggressive defense is the best. Rather than scattering like cockroaches when a light's turned on you should know when the light will be turned on and be gone or somewhere else by then. Then you'll have the upper hand. [last edit 2/2/2008 7:21 AM by aaronni - edited 1 times]

| | | scout your tunnels from above, follow their paths, know where all manholes/grates etc. are. With these steam tunnels you can expect a few things to use to your advantage. First, think back to why there are tunnels in the first place: to heat the buildings. This means that there are secondary tunnels to most of the buildings. Why is this important? If the lights turn on, if you hear someone around the corner, run for a building. It's not a 100% guarantee, but most of the time the doors from the tunnels to the buildings will only be locked from the outside, so you can basically use buildings as escape routes. This has been my experience with buildings/tunnels on my campus, though luckily I haven't had to use this. Another piece of advice is looking for buildings they are doing construction or renovation on. Often times, they leave this buildings somewhat unguarded to lessen the hassle for the construction workers. Also, if you go to the maintenance section of your school website, they may have a page to update where maintenance work is being done and hope for an unlocked door. What I bring: head lamp, mini-maglite, pocket knife, gor-tex boots

Well, but practically speaking, you'll probably never know when the lights are going to turn on, just like you'll never know whether the people running after you are acquainted with all the "hiding places" you are madly trying to remember. We may be agreeing on principle, but I guess I'd say it this way: Plan for the certainties and you'll be covered 99%. One certainty is that wandering around not knowing where you're going makes it easier to be caught, so my number-one recommendation is just to have a plan of any kind about where you're going in and where you're getting out. Do some measure of homework. But "hiding places" is just silly. Cheers, MoleNet94 [last edit 2/2/2008 7:57 AM by MoleNet94 - edited 1 times]

| | | The tunnel system is big, but it's divided into multiple sections and separated by locked doors. These doors have an Assa/Abloy type dimple lock if I recall correctly.

| | | Never seen anyone down there, and only maybe once seen a motion detector. Don't go for any side tunnels like one poster said. The building access doors are mostly locked, and you will be caught. Run for the nearest exit. Also, if you are worried about asbestos, yes bring a mask, they are abating in certain sections and there could be dust stirred up. And they're not always that hot. And how do you figure it would be felony trespass? Both the municipal code and RCW class trespass as a misdemeanor. Is there some kind of federal law that would come into play here? As far as I know, the campus is state property. Here is a steam leak from a couple weeks ago:
