* Activité gratuite

Lieu : Complexe aquatique de l'île Sainte-Hélène, parc Jean-Drapeau
Métro : Jean-Drapeau

Renseignements :

* www.parcjeandrapeau.com
* 514 872-6120

By the way Emperor Wang, you forgot to take a picture of the Expo Hovercraft platform! It's still there!

I guess I'll have to go back for another look then

A small article from today's Gazette on the Ile-Sainte-Helene metro station:

Commuters add personality to station's functional design
STEVE FAGUY, The Gazette

If it wasn't for Expo 67, Montreal's metro map would look a lot different.

Originally, the metro's Yellow Line was intended to run through the Mount Royal tunnel now used by the Two Mountains commuter train. But that plan was shelved in favour of a tunnel to Longueuil to service Expo 67.

The initial plans for the Yellow Line called for two stations on yet-to-be-constructed islands for Expo: le Notre Dame and Ile Ste. Helene. But technical problems forced the Ile Notre Dame station to be abandoned. So the Ile Ste. Helene mtro (renamed for Jean Drapeau in 2001) ended up servicing the entire fairgrounds.

"It was designed to service the most people in the least amount of time," says architect Jean Dumontier, 71, who conceptualized the station and its artwork. The 13-metre-wide entrances, railing-divided staircases and large waiting rooms on the platforms are all intended to handle high traffic. And that it did, servicing an average of one million people a day during the summer of 1967.

The station's artwork, four abstract yellow figures carved in concrete, are atlases, Dumontier explains. They figuratively hold up the four pillars of the station, and tie in with Expo's Man and His World theme.

There were other design elements that were built for Expo 67 but later removed, leaving large empty halls next to the platforms.

"We thought it would be interesting to have bathrooms in this station," Dumontier explains, noting the island didn't have much in the way of such facilities at the time. The plans also called for water fountains inside the station. Now, they exist only in a three-dimensional model he has at home, and in the vague memories of Expo visitors.

The artwork that did make it might not seem like much, but Dumontier says that's not where the beauty of the station is supposed to come from.

"The architecture is the function," he says. "The users provide the colour."

maZe surely has this web site bookmarked, but maybe some of you haven't seen it yet?

The Post-era page lists what became of some of the pavilions and sculptures. It's kinda cool how some of the pavilions were reassembled elsewhere and the sculptures scattered around the country.

Obscure Expo factoid: This granite statue of Samuel de Champlain, presently at St. Anne's Shrine on Isle La Motte, was sculpted in the Vermont pavilion at Expo 67. The artist and the work in progress were part of the exhibit there.

Those are classics indeed. But may I bring to your attention this amazing site as well. Him and Jason (from Jason67) have amazing sites and very good info on Expo 67.

I can't talk about it yet but a group of us are working on establishing a permanent study center on Expo 67, kinda like a museum but with a network of knowledge and people. More on this to come, probably in september or sometime this fall...
