Shameless Mediocrity - First Blood, Part Two

The usual godawful phone images; this time from a defunct yeast plant.

Generally speaking, weeds growing outside of windows aren't particularly interesting. This is a third floor window, however. And that plant has taken root in the window sill itself. I find that sort of adaptability to be really neat.

I'm equal parts amused and appalled by sub-literate junior high kid graffiti. That's more or less my opinion of William Shatner, but I've no desire to go spray painting it on walls.

In the short time that I've been on UER, I've already grown sick to death of the Is-Graffiti-Art-Or-Not debate. I thought this piece was rather compelling. If you've a different opinion, feel free to not share it with me.

Great location. Thanks for sharing.

I myself don't care for graffiti. I prefer the blank, old, rusty, or decrepid walls of the buildings to color my photos. A virgin site is best for me.

Great location. Thanks for sharing.

The pleasure is mine. Due to some severe illness, I've been out of commission all month. So it was indescribably wonderful to get into something abandoned again.

I don't know that I'm necessarily a huge fan thereof. In general, however, graffiti is an inevitability. It's been my (admittedly limited) experience that "virgin sites" are a rarity. If I can get there, the odds are good that some graff kid got there first. I try to enjoy the nice work and ignore the rest. With the notable exception of the tool who spray painted that moronic face at various points in the flour mill. That guy pisses me right off.

Great location. That looks really cool!! The graffiti really is a drag but it is, like many before me have said, inevitable. If you haven't visited the mill recently the graffiti is quite severe. I'm bringing some paint of my own to paint gray over all the dumb graffiti. I found a color thats about cement color so it should work pretty well. Just so you know security is tightening its grip a little because of the vandalism so watch out!!

I admire your desire to fix the tagging in the mill, but be careful. You know it's going to be that much worse if you get caught with a can of spray paint, whether it's cement-colored or not. I might just go there first and look in the shop where we went last time, see if you can find some paint stripper, and try that. It's too bad the stupid DIY people couldn't at least use a muted green like the tags that were already there.

"See you guys, you never listen to me. I said there was gonna be trouble but you didn't listen to me. You guys are crazy. You know, you guys are self destructive. There's a funny farm and it has your names written all over it. But I'm gettin' out of here. I'm... I smell ice cream!"

Barely mediocre, due to health reasons you're doing more than I am in Oly. It's interesting to note that this yeast plant looks similar to the flour mill, same era of build maybe?

Cool spot, I hope you didn't get a yeast infection while you were there!

It seems like there's new, lame-ass graffiti every time I go to the mill. I applaud your proactive approach to the issue, but I think LA is correct. It's probably best to attempt to use product from on site, rather than bringing something in; particularly with the tightening of security.

I empathize. As mentioned, things health put me out of the game all of last month. The yeast plant was built in 1912, so I suppose that the era of construction might account for the similarity in design. My thought, (and keep in mind that I make this statement with no knowledge of architecture whatsoever)
is that perhaps it's a simple matter of form following function. That particular design, I'd surmise, lends itself functional to industrial structures. Which is why flour mills, concrete plans, yeast factories, grain elevators, what-have-you; can all be seen to possess structural similarities. It's a theory. It might be wrong.

I've been waiting with grim anticipation for someone to make that pun. Thanks for getting it out of the way.

My question is, if her dad is so loaded, why did he only get a rum and coke?

This place also had the most unique odor of any abandonment I've been in so far, animal feces funk and the nearby vinegar plant lended a crispness to the air...

Yeah, it is an odor I have not encountered before or since. Did you check out any of the outbuildings, or the active portion? We were there during the day, and didn't want the neighbors to notice us, so we skipped that stuff. Which I regret.

We covered most of the place before the sun went down, then wandered the outbuildings after dark. I'll be back for sure but if anything this is a good place for the novices to hit up.
