So, I went on my first real (lame) drain expedition today. I was trying to get into a grate that I have seen a few blocks away from my house, which looks like it might be a fun, short little exploration. That didn't exactly work out how I had planned it, and I wasn't able to get in.

So, when that failed, I walked upstream a little ways to an outfall I had seen before. It's really small, probably only 4ft in diameter at the most, but it's not gated whatsoever. I guess they figure no one would bother going in something that small. I've gone up it about 100 feet before, but this time I decided to go further if my thighs would cooperate.

It really wasn't very exciting at all. It just kept going in the same diameter pipe. I hit about 4 manhole junctions, the last one containing a little overflow puddle, before deciding that I didn't need to see much more. Hopefully next time I'll be able to get into the other side and see if that's any more interesting.

By the way, if anyone know of any nice drains anywhere around the Washington area, let me know. I can't seem to find anything worthwhile around this area, but I know there has to be something somewhere.

I'll try and post a couple videos I recorded a little later.

Anyone have somewhere I can upload without streaming?

Wow. This represents, like, all the draining I've ever heard of in the Seattle area! I'm sure there are other drains, but damned if I can find any!! Eventually you'll have to stick this in the location DB and name it after yourself

Cheers,

I walked thru a bridge drain once. Kinda got the idea of what it's like. But I just don't understand the thrill you guys feel of surrounding yourself with pipe and water/sewage. Besides the darkness, smell, water substance, and dead things... Is there really anything that interesting or exciting in drains or small tunnel systems?

Being 6'3", I can't see myself walking thru small cramped tunnels, IMHO.

Buildings, corridors, and above-ground areas: yes.

I think for me, even though I don't have that much experience doing it, the interesting thing is just being underground, seeing a part of the system of the city/town that most people will never see.

Plus, it's kind of peaceful despite the wetness and spider webs. Nice water sounds, darkness, and it's usually a nice temperature. At one point in this one, I turned off the light and walked between two manholes, and it was almost like you could walk forever without knowing where you were going. It's hard to explain. Maybe there would be more to look at in an older/bigger system. But I guess I can see how it's not for everyone.

Explored the other end of the drain a little. Got that big grate open and managed to prop it open, and only went about 100 feet before there was a short falls. It was only about a 4 foot drop, but the stepirons were very badly positioned. I was unable to get down it at the time because I had too much stuff and didn't want to get my camera wet if I fell on the crappy steps, but I plan on going back with just a small light so that I can continue.

I also went further up the top end, but the drain turned into a shrinker. I was eventually crawling and decided that I should get kneepads or a skateboard before I go back. Hopefully I don't get claustrophobic if I do.

Follow-up to this crappy drain, and probably the last one. I won't be going again anytime soon.

I was bored today, so I figured I'd explore a little before I had to go to work. I still hadn't gotten everywhere in this little drain, so I packed up my stuff and headed down there.

I got to where I had been before, and then had turned back because I was carrying too much stuff. This time I made sure to pack light, and had a new headlamp and thus had more hands free, so I was able to make it down the junction I hadn't gone down before. I was surprised to find that it actually traveled 2 directions at the bottom, instead of just to the outfall. First, I decided to see where it ended, and was disappointed to find that it was only about 200 feet from the junction. However, there is a nice little pool down at the end made by the waterfall from the pipe, but I wasn't so sure about the water after making my way back up to the junction. There, I traveled the other direction, immediately encountering lots of debris, and also lots of light brown goo that looked quite unhealthy. I decided that I needed to see what it led to after the effort, though, so I trudged through it, and the tunnel became very cramped with about a foot of pine needles and branches before it finally broke into another manhole junction. This time, though, ws the end, with the only other pipes being a ring of 2-inch holes around the circumference of the shaft.

So, it was rather unexciting like the rest of the drain, but I'm glad I checked it out, if only because now I get to name a drain. I'm calling it Pioneer, since it was my first drain and I wouldn't be surprised if I was the first to explore it, considering the effort it took to get into it and the seclusion of the outfall.

Here's my backpack covered in brown goo. It doesn't smell at all, but I'll just tell myself it's poo to condition myself in case I ever enter a sewer.

And here's me afterward, looking quite wet. Luckily I didn't get as dirty as my backpack.

I'm glad it wasn't really poo. That would be pretty crappy <audience groans>

The weather this weekend is supposed to be nice. I guess I need to get off my butt and go check out the drain I found near my house a couple of weeks ago. May be even smaller than yours though, I don't know.

There are definitely some bad pipes out there, the worst one I was in was full of yummy mud. If you are in the redmond area, we have a few big pipes that lead far and are fairly uneventful... well that is... until you hit a challenge. There is the slough that runs between Lake Sammamish and Lake Washington. Along that are several big pipes, I have been in three there. One goes right under Redmond Town Center, another goes further than where I gave up (this was the muddiest tunnel I had been in) and another that runs along 85th Street. The muddy picture:
