Flashlight

I have been lurking here for a while and I know there are a thousand threads on this, but what is the best flashlight to have? I was going to get a SureFire G2, but I want a flashlight that runs longer than an hour for a reasonable price. I think I might get an LED Mag, but I don't really understand the difference between the "3-Cell D" and "4-Cell D" and what-not. I guess the more cells the more light the flashlight gives off? I don't know much about flashlights so any help would be appreciated.

Minimag 2AA or 3AA LED. ~$25
3AA is brighter, but also longer. These are good for 2-3 hours on regular batteries.

$30-40
Mag 3D or 4D LED. 3D runs for ~20hrs, 4D around 40 hrs on a set of batteries. Light output is very well regulated. I really don't like them, because they're cumbersome big.

~$33 shipped
Streamlight 4AA Luxeon 4-5 hours on rechargeable. 3 hrs on alkaline. This light has a regulator that keeps the output constant and non-dimming for a substantial portion of battery's useful life.

I'd say that the 3AA LED is his best bet to start off with. As for the battery life, are you sure that it's just 2-3 hours?

Are you sure a Mini-Mag is a good choice? I'm sure you would know more than I, but I doubt they would put out a whole lot of light. I want a full-sized flashlight.

I build lights like no other!

Maglites that light stuff up at 800ft; while running for a couple days straight.
Modified Surefires to put out 3x the light and run on rechargeables, you name it.

It all depends on your price range.

The stock magLEDs suck-their maximum output is around 60 lumens and dims after 15 minutes. My modified 3D maglites put out 240->150 lumens for around 10 hours, and then 6 days of useable light.{around $80 for ue guys} The surefires I modify put out around 220 lumens for roughly 1.5 hours and use reachargeable lithiums.{around $120 for ue guys} PM me if you're interested.

As for as off the shelf lights:
Inova X1 for long running up close work; or get a minimag and a niteize 3led dropin

I second the Streamlight 4AA Luxeon; swap out the luxeon to a seoul SSC and get twice the brightness

Picked up a minimag with the LED conversion recently. It's definitely not the brightest thing ever, but I have no doubt that it would be perfectly sufficient to find my way anywhere if I wanted to be discreet. Personally, I like having my 4D maglite if I'm not worried about someone seeing the light, if it's during the day, or if I want to see more than 20ft in front of me (I doubt this little 2AA would've done the trick very well earlier today). But I think this little guy will be a good backup, so now I won't have to carry batteries for my mag and I don't have to worry about them running out in this with the LED's.

I don't have any experience with expensive flashlights, but I really don't think you need them. The brighter you are, the easier it is to see you.

I got a 3AA version for either around that price or slightly cheaper at Home Depot. Just because it's a Mini, doesn't mean that it's not bright. LEDs put normal bulbs to shame.

Indeed. The 3AA is brighter than the 2AA, but I don't like it as much, because it's oddly long.

10 foot pvc pipe from home depot. (And pipe caps.)
-$3.50
40000 lumen leds from eBay
-$10.00
5 superbad flashlights.
Priceless. (Or $13.00 for those of you who were doing the math...)

No, I am. I got a regular Maglite for under $20, and it was not a mini and it was not on sale, but I lost it... Anyway, I should probably just buy another of the same kind. Whatever. That one was fine.

At 120grams the Gators lightweight headlamp contains two 50,000hour burn-life, hi-powered 3wattLED lamps beside a 5mm ultra bright LED beacon. The lamps are set with broad-beam and spot-beam lenses and burn at a total brightness of 280 Lumens.

The three button intuitive and backlit handlebar mounted touch pad allows the rider to individually control headlamp brightness at 50 and 100%, while allowing for flashing or constant mode on the beacon lamp.

Powered by a Lithium Ion battery the unit burns at full brightness for four hours and 2,000 hours of beacon lighting. A smart charge system recharges the battery in 4 hours. Using a double connector you can connect two batteries to the Gator, doubling burn time while maintaining consistent battery output.

Weatherproof connectors keep the 3piece Gator watertight.
