Theres nothing like a little drama to release all of that pent-up sexual frustration. Wooo!

I agree with anvil - a lot of the buildings surrounding CFB Esquimalt are under their jurisdiction. There are departments specifically made for that problem, but they just ignore the problem and hope it'll solve itself. It's disgusting.

... and simular to my homework situation.

the military is kinda in the business of fucking shit up

I guess that's why you're a free person and living in one of the best countries in the world.

Of course, the countries with the biggest militaries are all the best countries in the world to live in with lots of freedom. I've always wanted to live in North Korea.

Something like that. When I said the military is kinda in the business of fucking shit up, you Do understand that I meant 'they're in the business of blowing shit up.'

If that was the case I'd be there in a second, I love blowing shit up.

Well Tanuki, I'm talking about the sacrificies our military has made. It's a reason we're not like North Korea.

KK, sorry I assumed you meant somethig else.

Anvil, I don't need to agree with you. Who the hell are you to me? I can easily see for myself that they are rotting crapholes that needed to be bulldozed. I think you are completely wrong and off your rocker.

Looks like I may have opened a little can o' worms here

Anvil - I am glad to see that there are people out there as passionate about saving historically signifigant structures & protecting areas as you. I would be lying if I said that I knew a ton about the history of military property around vic, but am learning lots and exploring...

Have you seen the "de-construction" of the old school near the town & country? I've been trying to track down some history on that building... maybe not nearly as historically signifigant, but still a once beautiful wooden structure (1931) that is being torn down for to be re-developed as seniors assisted living.. (Which is going to be plentiful with all the seniors housing going up, when in 20 years the baby boomers start passing)

http://www.mala.bc...Public/Mntview.htm

How do you feel about "restoring" (If you can call it that) some of the old buildings downtown for modern living? IE: 610 Johnson street, above MEC, the future of the bay center... although the craftmanship is not there like it was when these places were built (Unfortunately I dont think it ever will be again) it isn't worse than plowing them over and starting over again, although I still do have mixed feelings about "modernizing" them...

Hey surekill - BMABW.

"I can easily see for myself that they are rotting crapholes that needed to be bulldozed. " Glad you made that assessment from the picture you had a look at. If you actually did. Thanks for sharing.

"I think you are completely wrong and off your rocker. " Well that's nice. I think your opinion means diddly and you're a bonehead. So I guess we're even.

"Anvil, I don't need to agree with you. Who the hell are you to me? " It's not about agreeing or disagreeing, or who I am to you, spud - its about knowing what you're talking about - which you don't. If you had come to your conclusion after doing a bit of research, a proper assessment, etc. - your view would carry weight. I might not agree with your opinion of these buildings as "rotting crapholes", but your opinion would be valid. But you didn't, and it doesn't. You're just yapping. Why the hell would you even weigh in on this issue if you haven't got a clue? Got nothing better to do? Need some validation?

And to put forth views like that on a webboard dedicated to exploring buildings like this? Those buildings were exactly what we're supposed to be exploring. They were wonderful buildings, that would have been perfect for urban exploration. And your bright idea is to tear them down?!?! And that's a bonus, how, again, exactly? You got your wish - they're gone. So how are we supposed to explore them now? Now that these "rotting crapholes" are "bulldozed", Mr. Brainiac?

Some kind of new logic going on there......We should tear down all the old empty buildings we want to explore. Yes, just bulldoze them, and then we'll pretend to explore them. Imagine we're actually in there. Make up stories from the one picture we've looked at.......What fun. Virtual Urban Exploration. VUE for short.

The school you're talking about is very interesting. Is it still standing? I got to explore its hallways when I worked for the School District a couple of years ago. Pretty eerie, wandering those halls, classrooms, into the cafeteria, the offices the auditorium (which was in the middle of the building). Lots of graffiti, left by the people that had gone there, worked there, etc. If anyone gets the opportunity to get inside with a camera before its gone, I'd highly recommend it.

Exploring is fun, but keeping old buildings around doesn't really make economical sense now does it. Some people live in reality. Anvil, I trust that if there was a more interesting photo to be had, A.Lien would have taken it. Anyway, I'm sure it was no different than all the other delilect old shacks I've seen. I find it so amusing how you come up with these huge rants and all those names for me. If I had to guess your age I'd put you at about 12 or at least an IQ of around 90. I also have no idea what BMABW is supposed to mean. Be My Athletic Bodied Woman? That's just weird man.

Yup, school is still standing.. but not for long unfortunately... The seperated gym in the back as well as another couple buildings behind have already been "deconstructed" They saved all of the beautiful fur beams though which is nice, someone else can enjoy early old growth. They have started to demo inside as well but the building still stands...

The only graffiti I really encountered was chalk on the boards.. kinda funny actually.. ohh and a "In Krust We Trust" spraypainted on a door in the basement, which was puzzling...

The cafeteria & Kitchen is COMPLETELY flooded by about 3 feet of water & smells so I couldn't explore there see pic

I've gotta run to work now, but Ill post some more pics later if anyone is interested

So you did only see one picture. LOL. Pathetic.

Maybe you should move over to the Urban Demolition Webboard, where they work to tear these "shacks" and "rotting crapholes" down. You'd fit in there much better.

Not all heritage buildings make economic sense. They aren't supposed to, they aren't required to - if that were the case, a lot of what's been preserved wouldn't be around.

As for rants and names - "off your rocker" is a compliment?

Speaking of which... I was up studying last night after work, and my mom turns to me and goes "Your eyes are looking a little blood shot... Maybe you should go to bed." When I looked in the mirror, my eyes were BRIGHT red, and I didn't even celbrate 420. HAHA I wonder if they were that bad at work.

Welcome aboard Paleface :) Good job getting into the school. (Am keen to see more pics) I got into the Gym one night, (sorry pics on private board), and into some of the other buildings during the day, while the workers were on a break.

That black and white you posted earlier is a strong image, (did you take it?) as is yours. Flooded basement, that deep, creepy indeed. In Krust... funny.

Briefly, regarding heritage preservation, I know we can't keep everything, but way too much is lost in the name of profit, or lack of vision, respect of history. Adaptive re-use is really my favorite strategy. (If they can't leave well enough alone, and restore it)

That old school may be shabby,(demolition by neglect) but it's got a lot of character, and is probably very solidly built. I'm sad to see it go, but if others are saved in it's place, then I guess sometimes that can justify a sacrifice.

If interested in architectural adaptation, the old Sussex Hotel is a kind of not too succesful example. I'm glad they saved the facade, (being a fan of deco), but that courtyard always seems cold, and I never see people enjoying it. The space is just used as a throughway.

Checked my files, and here's a shot I took years ago, just before they re-worked it. Nice to have some new enthusiastic people around here, YW, Tweeek,

Cheers. A.

And that barracks building was solid. They filmed part of the movie Murder at the Presidio, in that building. And there was reports of a child ghost appearing. Numerous reports over the years. Not just any old building lost here, as many said, an important military building. Think of Fort Rodd Hill. Imagine if that site was lost to a bunch of plaster coated leaky condos. I know, it's much more complex and different than the Barracks building, but military history is a specific genre.

I'm assuming you're talking about WWII, and this isn't just mindless rhetoric with no connection to reality? Well, if that's the case, I really doubt that any individual in the military responsible for deciding tear down those buildings made any sacrifices in WWII. In fact, I doubt any individual currently in the Canadian military was in WWII. And the military institution didn't make any sacrifices for me, it was individuals like my grandparents who fought in the war. So I'll be grateful to my grandparents and the individuals like them, but I see no reason for a blind hero worship of the military.

I also find it interesting that you seem to be presenting a dichotomy in your personal opinion, on one hand you claim we should have a reverence for military history, but you are still completely against preserving military history. Personally I've got no fascination with military history, I say let the buildings rot, they grow better mushrooms that way. But each to their own.

If it was some awesome 500 year old castle that took 20 years to build I'd be all against tearing it down. However... meh

Anvil, why is your word to be taken as the gospel? You seem to think you're a real expert on everything and that the world should agree with you. When in fact you are just some shlub who likes to argue on web boards like countless other losers all over the world. I really don't put much weight on anything you have to say.

As for the military; the people in our current military are really selfless. They serve this country and risk a lot. I know two people who have fought overseas. One of my friends fought in the Bosnian conflict and another is in Afganistan right now. They were only in the reserves as well and went over there voluntarily. This article I read the other day reminded me of how the people I've known in the military truly are.

"If it was some awesome 500 year old castle that took 20 years to build I'd be all against tearing it down. "

Do I need to point out the idiocy of this statement, or can anyone else help me out? I haven't checked recently, but how many structures/castles in North America are 500 years old.......? Ohhhh, you're referring to the 500 year old castles the indigenous peoples of North America were so famous for constructing.

"When in fact you are just some shlub who likes to argue on web boards like countless other losers all over the world. "
You don't happen to have a mirror handy, do you?

"Anvil, why is your word to be taken as the gospel?"
My word? Take a look around you. Look at the other posts that are weighing in on this. Feeling a bit alone? You should. You're on your own, spud. A solitary moron stumbling about blindly, in the logical wilderness, desperately grasping for shreds of ever-fleeting thought......

Besides, as I'm only 12 years old, and my IQ is only 91, I'm allowed to act this way.

Who said anything about castles in north america? It's just an example spud man. What I'm saying is that it's not exactly anything spectacular. I'm sure 99.999% of canadians have never heard of the Great Barracks of Esquimalt.

I'm obviously not the only one who feels this way. The buildings were torn down right? Luckily they don't allow people like you to make decisions in the real world.

Ok I'm done talking about this now, so insult me again. Call me something like spud of moron or bumbling or something since I don't have the same opinion as yourself. Smoke some more weed, close your eyes, everything will be ok.

I also went into the gym, but not until the bulk of the demo was completed and there wasn't much left of it.. I was a little late Is there anyway you could forward to pics my way?
