I have friend's who've been over. There is a guy who goes by "___ Beard" ... Red Beard, maybe.. It's ~$15 round-trip.

I love McNabs island. One of my favourite places to go exploring.

I've heard the rules for camping on McNabs have changed recently after a death on the island. I was told camping could only take place at one specific spot on the island and this spot was quite far away from all there is to see on the island. And NO fires at all??

I had hoped (and probably still will) to sleep inside one of the buildings out there but the new rules say different..

it only takes like an hour or so to walk the length of the island.. it wouldn't be hard if you wanted to crash in one of the ruins, but i'm not sure why you'd want to.

Yeah, I've been told it takes ~one hour to walk from one end to the other.. And, also, that it would take days to walk the island following the coast, stopping to check out all the sites..

The thought of sleeping inside a ruin came up when we were discussing a spring trip to the island. My group was skeptical about sleeping outdoors in a tent, in the middle of the harbour, in low temperatures and above average winds. Sleeping inside a ruin is the simplest solution to wind problem... Not to mention, I think it'd be cool to sleep in a ruin.

You can cover everything on the island with the space of a summer's day, if you start early and walk fast. I recommend staying to the beaten paths(road) when possible, because bush-bashing slows you down a lot and can be navigationally confusing and very scratchy.

Yeah, that's the thing. I don't want to rush through the island. I'm sure we could cover it all if we started early enough, I just really don't want to miss anything. I think we're going to spread it over two days.

I've heard to stick to beaten paths on McNabs (and Georges, but that won't be a problem) due to "holes to nowhere" found here and there on both islands.

the bugs will eat you alive, man! bring a tent just in case, it's pretty damp, and dirty, moldy and gross in those places. can't imagine the air quality would be too good either..

Bugs, yes, bugs. I had forgot about them. We'll have to bring tents, even if we do sleep in doors. And, air quality, didn't consider that either. I imagined the ruins to be similar to the open-air ruins at Point Pleasant Battery and York Redoubt.. We'd barely be inside, just enough to shelter us from the wind. Now that I think about it, it could be just as simple to sleep between buildings or, apparently, where cannons we once mounted (a friend is explaining it to me)... Just wanna get out of the wind

You've never been able to have fires and there is only one proper camping spot anyway. The rules only changed for the one summer.

Every time I've been inside the forts, it's always been damp and mouldy. There's always been puddles or pools of water, and the air is always heavy and stagnant.
Why anyone would consider camping in those conditions is beyond me..

There's plenty of good places to camp on the island, but the only sanctioned camping spot, and the only place I've ever camped, is at the old tea house building site. Good camping spot, and only a ~30 minute walk in each direction to Fort McNab and Fort Ives, Strawberry Battery, the old rifle range, etc.
Wind wouldn't be a problem there, as it's a well sheltered location in the woods.

We considered camping in an open air room and obviously not in heavy, stagnant, moldy conditions. Like I said, our concern was with shelter from the wind which an open air building or room would provide, as would the cannon mounts, based on what I'm told. The thought at the time was that we'd be going over the next couple weeks, meaning we'd need as much protection from the elements as possible because it really isn't warm enough yet. The smart thing to do would be to wait for summer but that may not be an option for my group since I think we might be parting ways sooner than later.

The campsite was described to me as being out of the way. If it actually isn't that far out of the way and it's protected from the wind, etc., we'll most likely stay there.

Is anyone up on what happened to the kid who died out there? One of my friends went out there not long after his death. On the ride out, Red Beard mentioned something about a creepy dude, a pedophile type guy, who lurks out there. He was lurking the night that the kid died out there. Apparently, this creeper sleeps in the hull of a wrecked boat? Is there any truth to any of this?

i don't know if the pedophile thing is true.. but what has been reported, is 3 guys went out camping, got really drunk, and one was found dead near the shore. alcohol poisioning. i'm pretty sure there was no indication he was sexually assaulted.

Two teenagers and a man in his mid 40s if I recall correctly. That just strikes me as a little odd.

My friends encountered two creepy guys out there on their last trip. They assume it was the creepy guys who stole all of their food. :/

I'm pretty sure the oldest dude was in his 20s or early 30s. He was one of bill kidney's roomates, bill had this to say at the time on locals...

"To explain what I'm able to discuss at this point, a friend of mine/roommate was camping on McNab's over the weekend with some friends of his. One of them went off by himself and had some sort of accident and died during the night. My friend found his body in the morning. He's had a pretty rough couple of days and the media has been trying to get in touch with him. He's still in a pretty heavy state of shock and doesn't want to speak about it. That is why you've been seeing my name everywhere. He has asked me to speak on his behalf about the things that can be released. "

but it wouldn't surprise me if there were creepy guys that hung out there.. there's creepy guys everywhere

Yeah, that sounds more likely than the pedophile story I was told.

But the food was stolen so there are definitely creepers out there.
