Was up in cville for the game this weekend and decided to try to find it. drove down the dead end road with the gate and decided better not go in that way with all the houses near there. We drove back down on 53 to where the monticello walkway parking lot is at (Where a bunch of cars are parked) and parked there. Then we walked across the street into the woods. I knew in the general direction where we were trying to go, so we kept on walking. It was about a 15-20 minute walk through the woods and we came upon the BRS, we had to climb a small fence and jump a creek but it was pretty easy. We stared exploring the outside of the infirmary and discovered that the glass on the sliding door out front had been busted out so we just climbed through there and went to the right. Looked up and down most of the halls and were about to go on the roof when we saw a guy outside on a tractor mowing. scared we quietly crept back downstairs and slid out the front door and headed back towards the woods...got some pretty cool pics while we were there. would like to visit again but probably wont be back in cville for a while. in the woods we came across an old boarded up house with a small trailer out front. the front door was unlocked so we looked around in there, it seemed like an old workers building, or a shuttle station or something...anyone know what it was? this was my first trip up there but i had a good time and just wanted to share.

Be careful going in there . . . people have been arrested several times. There's high security. Terrible thing to happen to such a great place. I didn't even get into UE before they shut it down. Where was that old trailer? I'd want to check that out.

I've heard about the tight security up there, thats why i made a venture through the woods and got lucky and found it. Its a shame people go up there and trash the place (which even more so justifies the cause that tresspassing isn't allowed) That place is so big I could have spent the whole day up there exploring all of the buildings! The trailer was a pretty small work-site type trailer. It was in front of a building in the middile of the woods. After I got home and posted that first message I was looking around for info on the building. From the first map on this page: http://www.faculty...ueridgesanatorium/ it looks like #24 which they have labeled as the colored dormitories. But judging by some of the pictures on there it didnt look anything like what they said the colored dormitories looked like. I dont know what the rules of these forums are but I have a few pics of it I could post on here if thats allowed and if someone told me how. In that map I think they mislabeled that building in the woods, I think it is an old service building. After looking at the map I saw a small road that comes off the right of the loop road and goes out into the middle of the woods to this building. I didn't have a map with me when I went out there so I was just remembering what I could from the website. It wasnt until after I got back home to look at the map that I could start piecing together where I was. We entered the sanatorium just below where the loop starts on that road. It was a shame my exploring was cut short when we saw the guy on the tractor mowing. After that we decided it was too much to risk hanging around and got out of there. Theres no one around that old service building so it was easy to look around there as much as we wanted.

You'd need super ninja powers to get in there now. I live within a mile of it, and it looks pretty impenetrable. I'd strongly advise against it, as they'll arrest you if your caught. There is a powerplant right near there. I could give you directions: PM me if you want.

If you dont mind walking a little bit through the woods, that seemed like the most low-key route to me. Plus you can park in the lot to those hiking trails and no one would know the difference. Anyone else ever gone this way?

Yeah, you're right, they've got those two buildings mixed up. I think the one in their gallery they have labeled as the colored dorms is actually the service building.

I was going to try the route you used today, just to look at the exterior, but I slept in and it was too late to go there. Yeah, those trails do make a good place to park.

I've been to BRS 3 or 4 times (before the UVA teacher got everybody and their mom arrested.)

I know exactly how to get there and get really wet doing it ;)

But the people around there aren't dumb. They see people going in and out all the time. (the people at the Mill across the street especially.)

I don't think I saw any unresolved issues about access, etc. But PM me if you have any questions.

I can also tell you pretty much what every building is for.

However I never found the barn.

I hope you were careful going in the manor!! (oldest building on premises, pretty much center of the campus.)

You guys know the history of BRS, right?
I was mildly (who am I kidding, GIGANTICALLY) obsessed with it for .... well I still am.

Is the chapel still ok??? I hope no one got off the boards on the stained glass windows. That would make me really sad.

I'd love to hear an update on the place!

Oh man, BRS. So many mixed feelings. This was my first real UE experience. I went down with 3 friends to take pictures. I live in Northern Virginia, so it was a bit of a trek. We got there and started exploring. Too soon, we had to leave on account of one of our female accomplices freaking out after our tour of the basement of the Mansion. No incident other than that. Went a second time several months later. Again no incidents, but a great run. Saw the mansion in its entirety, got into the "yellow?" long building across from the mansion, chilled on the roof and enjoyed a picnic. Went into the hospital proper and got scared shitless in the halls subterra, then checked out some of the small house-like buildings on the road perpendicular to the chapel. Lots of random psych evals lying around. Then complete blessing from the gods of UE, the Chapel door was unlocked. We left an hour or two later when the UVA rotc showed up for paintball training. Bet those wankers tore it up. Third and last visit, i parked at the mill and snuck down the dirt road as was my custom. Hopped the gate, and walked up through the power plant. Started walking down the street towards the hospital and all of a sudden. A siren and a cop car behind us. Long story short, after being molested by the police and accused of being in a cult, i was arrested on a summons along with my two friends. At the time i was a minor and it was before that english professor took his ill fated field trip. I had to go to court and face Class 1 misdemeanor charges. They threatened me alot in court, but i showed the judge some of my pictures from BRS and other lesser sites, telling her it was A) art, and being art, i respected the sites i visited, and did my shooting a in professional manner (safety, planning, ethics) and she ended up dropping my charges. (Mostly cause by the time of my hearing, that english class had set precedent and gotten all of their charges dropped.) So, while BRS is definately one of the nicest sites in all of VA, it is no longer a viable one, as security is ridiculous now, and, a slightly personal observation, the groundskeeper and Abermarle County police are the biggest assholes on this side of the mississippi! anyway, happy UE to all this holiday season, i've taken an extended vacation, but i am back, and hope to be posting new pics soon.

hello again,

Apologies on the delayed response. I was passing through albermarle county on 64 last week and pulled off at the BRH exit just to drive by it. After doing so I remembered that i had not responded in quite some time.

anyways, im a hokie - big win that day :) too bad we didnt come to play against fsu.

as for the pics, ill have to get them off my roommates computer. Don't have time to now, but I will get on that.

Regarding to some peoples posts of parking at the mill (michie tavern), I wouldn't park there for the reason of someone seeing you walking down that road would probably know what you were up to. When I went, we parked at the bottom of the hill where everyone parks to go on those walking trails. Just had to wait til no cars were coming and got to the cover of the woods.

It seems like alot more and more people are telling stories of getting caught. I know there is no "known schedule" of rotc, police training etc up there but does anyone have any insight on good times/bad times that they were up there? I went on a saturday afternoon (~3pm) that just so happened to be after a uva football game. When I was there we didn't come across anyone except the guy mowing on a tractor. that was still enough to send us back to the woods.

Here's an attempt at posting a pic, im new at this thing, so bear with me

<in response to avoidsreality>

I was able to see the barn from the road when passing through. On the main road (the one with the gates and the asbestos warning) you can see the barn. It's pretty far from the hospital itself. As for the chapel it was boarded up tight from the looks of it last time i was up there. I didn't get as much time to look around as I would have liked to...could have spent all day looking around. good luck all and happy new year- off to celebrate.

Has anyone been here recently? I'd like to see it but if I went it would be a late night venture and I'm not sure if it would be too sketchy to park at some hiking trails at 1AM on a Friday or Saturday night. I'm not opposed to walking a mile or two if I have to from a safe parking place. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

I was wondering if it's still standing...

Everytime I've been there I've parked at the end of the road near the gate / power plant... the 2nd and last time I was there (back in early 05) a caravan of white utility trucks were driving around on campus... one of them stopped to look at us as we were exiting a house near the Wright Pavillion, but he kept driving, I guess, once we ran into the woods and down the ravines, etc. LoL

Ok really I have never heard anything of this place so I googled it. This is what I got... is this the same place?

If so maybe someone needs to get ahold of the person in charge of the walking tours?

The last time that Blue Ridge Sanatorium website was updated: 1/18.03
So probably no walking tours.
I always wanted to go there, but the security sounds too intense.

Yes, it's still standing. No, they don't give walking tours. As far as I know, nothing has changed as far as the buildings, security, etc...
