The gas detector thing might come in handy, but we've got Tanuki. He's all Professional Scientist and shit, so if there's something sniffy down below...er, you know what I mean...Tanuki will tell us.

Headquarters sounds interesting, and I've been meaning to head up Island for a better look. I hear there all sorts of these abandoned Company Towns up the coast, and on the mainland, and I'd wager that there are some as yet undiscovered. Summer time is what...kinda sorta maybe around the corner...maybe sorta kinda we can plan something for the warmer months.

As for the tunnels in Victoria, and, more important the HBC Warehouse tunnel, where there's a will, there's a way. I don't offer that as false optimism...those who have dedicated themselves to this search are close to the rabbit hole.

as much as you guys hate gadgets

another gadget i bring with me to vic is a portable gas detector to many gasses are invisible and have no smell with all the cars driving above carbon monoxide can kill you in minutes of being in a tunnel, who knows what else is down there, especialy in drains.

I wouldn't say we hate gadgets, I don't at least. They just have to really be needed to justify packing them around, or the expense for the electronic stuff. I looked into a camera on a wire at the Spy Store in Vancouver. Way over priced and not very good quality. I stuff my Sony point and shoot into small spaces all the time. Pop the flash and who knows what will show up. It usually works well.

Safety is no place to save money or skimp though. On that note, could you post a photo, price, and the brand name and info of your gas detector gadget? Thanks. A while back you talked about that island, off the northern end of Vancouver Island, (forgot the name) did you ever find the photos?

The town that got destroyed is very interesting. If it's the one I'm thinking of, near Cumberland? Supposedly the government was going to restore it as a tourist town. They were considering that town or another in the interior of B.C. Guess which one happened. Barkerville. Now world famous. A mistake not to save them both. I think the locals tore down the one on the island around 1969, after losing to Barkerville.

Have you guys ever seen these images before? They show the block of buildings that used to stand immediately west of what is now Market Square (where the junction of Store, Pandora, Johnson and Wharf Streets is now).

i dunno, its my old mans gas monitor, he uses it in the mine. as for stuff on the north island. not much, that island near sayward (Yorke Island) that used to have tunnels, baracks, gun implacements and such is cool it had Two 4-inch guns which were temporarily emplaced at Seymour Narrows in 1914. In WWII this was the examination battery for Johnstone Strait, armed with two 6-inch guns originally from Stanley Park Battery, Vancouver, that replaced two earlier 4.7-inch quick-firing guns in 1942. The examination gun was a 6-pounder gun. Two 40mm Bofors AA guns were here 1942 - 1945. Three searchlights were emplaced here. This battery protected the "backdoor" northern approach to Vancouver and Victoria.the photos are in a shoe box somewhere from my last trip, when i find them i will scan them and upload them. not much for UE up here, there was an abandon hospital up past browns bay, untill it burnt down... cfb holberg used to be an airforce base near the town of holberg on the way to winter harbor it was used during ww2. the radar domes still exist and the runways as well as a hanger and old offices i believe, at a time the base had a bowling alley and dance hall. up near coal harbor there is an abandon indian reservation, old houses from the 70s boarded up. tahsis up past gold river is virtualy abandon for the most part accept for the general store and mobile home park, after the mill closed the town died most of the buildings are abandon. in cumberland there is an abandon two story post office with a safe and basement, its old.

made of limestone blocks. there are coal mines in cumberland that if you ask some old timers they will tell you where to find places to enter. i dont suggest it, its risky. this site tells you how to get into them http://mining.mosa...ert.williams2.html

there used to be another town called beven just up behind cumberland now all the remains is small mental home and a massive abandon pump house that used to house massive raves in the summer.

east thurlow an island north of quadra has an old abandon fishing resort from the 50s and 60s john wayne used to stay there and go fishing, its kind of like the shinning.

this is a large entry and i could keep going but i think this is where i end it. whens the next vic meeting? perhaps i will drive down, or catch the train.

Thanks for the interesting info Danbar, (and to those who posted the great archival photos). Let us know if you are coming to town. I rode the rails from Duncan yesterday. (Inside the train, thank you very much) The conductor has a sick sense of humor. He cut all the lights and the engine in the middle of the 300+ foot drop over Niagra Canyon. (A good hike btw).

We sat there looking doooooowwwwwwwnnnnnn for a few minutes. Veri Cool.

Not a lot of choices for public rail travel on Van Island. It took about an hour from Dunkin to Vic. There's two trestles, they're both high. The northern one is narrower, so when you look out, you see nothing below the train, except tree tops. Kinda trippy, have fun.

The Post Office/Customs building in Cumberland was sold some time ago, and is in the process of being renovated.

Tahsis is far from virtually abandoned - although the town lost its sawmill - which was the economic engine of the community, there remains a sizeable population there.

Bevan was the location of No.8 mine of Dunsmuir's Cumberland area coal mining operations.

How about "safely robbing a bank" or "safely snatching a purse".....or how about back on the topic of tunnels in Victoria?

How about just a "no that’s way off topic" would do. And I understand that you think this would be helping to make people rob more copper. And After all you would not want to advocate any kind of safety when trespassing right? And that could not be anymore dripping with sarcastic goodness. Why is that more off topic then the search for satins fav underground fixing spot in the City O gardens. Its infiltration in my book.

Teaching people how to safely steal copper wire from buildings is a part of UE? Stealing or causing damage to buildings tends to get them locked up, and who likes that? Looking for and exploring the tunnels of Victoria is UE, stealing is just stupid. If someone is dumb enough to steal copper wiring from old buildings, they should expect to get shocked. Just my opinion.

I agree with that point that steeling is not part of UE. If you are Exploring and especially around electrical facilities I think it would be prudent to know what things to avoid. I have not interest in steeling wire / collecting cans etc, but its been in the media a lot and It occurred to me that it would be useful to know or have a primer on avoiding unnecessary harm to oneself. Of course the best way to avoid getting electrocuted (and you die you don't get a don king makeover) would be to not trespass. I just wanted to see if anyone on this forum would have any advice. This is the only place I post because for the most part people here seem to know their stuff. I really did not intend to get into a debate about ethics thax

Agreed. I believe there's some sort of opinion re: taking/stealing in the UER FAQ section.

Also, if one were to post a 'how to safely remove etc.' in UER, there would be an issue of liability, should one get arrested/injured/killed whilst removing/stealing that which is not theirs.

Take only pictures, leave only footprints.

If I wanted to do something that could potentially be dangerous, I certainly wouldn't trust a how-to manual with twice as many spelling errors as sentences.
