Portland!

Hello all.. There seem to be several people from Portland here, and yet there is virtually no discussion regarding activities in this area. I moved here about a year ago, and there are tons of cool places to explore. Much better than Seattle (feel free to disagree, but I lived there all my life before moving to Portland). I just put up a site documenting some of my trips in the area: http://wastepdx.net

So, if anyone would like to discuss specific sites, or if you know of something interesting that I somehow missed, I'd love to talk to you.. (and no, I won't reveal locations to complete strangers)

sasha

PS. Anybody been in the tunnels/drains around here? I've got my eye on a few..

Well, I'm not from Portland, but I do travel frequently to the Snohomish/Everett areas in WA. Lots of stuff there that many people do miss.

Ya, not so much directly in Seattle, because Seattle is more of a populated business area & city, and doesn't have the open space that I find in smaller towns in WA (and CA where I'm from).

Portland is much like the same with Seattle, but it does have it's pockets of interest. I'd personally try the industrial district. When I drove thru there on I-5 from CA to WA, that seemed like the ideal place to start. Pretty virgin, and looked easy to access.

Good luck!

How so? Are you referring to the amount of rain we get? Well, that sort of thing can be planned for - during the dry season, for instance. Were you aware of the elaborate tunnel system recently installed under Portland?

Recently? Hasn't it been around in various stages for 50 years or so?

I know back when Qwest was US West..they had go into a part of the system when there was a telephone system failure in downtown Portland that was very very old and was made a "dry" tunnel, but it just took forever to get to that part because they had to drill to get there.

Interesting.. However, the system I referred to was started in 2001. It's almost 19,000ft long, and when construction is complete will be around twice that.

Sure, an older system would likely be far more rewarding to explore, but probably more difficult to get into based on what I've seen. Some first-hand accounts would be nice, surely *someone* has thought of this before?

I personally stay away from underground stuff (mines excluded). Especially since Portland in part of a waterway system. Whether in wet or dry season, the water company can open and release the dams and water portals at anytime to reroute water. The company here in San Jose does the same thing. Mostly to flush down the pipes and drains due to the amount of stormns and trash we get in our drain systems.

Skelly has more info on your area, but I'd recommend the warehouses and industrial district myself.

There are also the farmlands that have abandoned structures... My cousins live in two such areas with tons of these buildings.

Those tunnels look pretty cool, thanks for posting. Do you have more pics?

I stopped tunneling after being stuck in quad-killing multi-mile half-crouch networks at the very beginning of my UE days. I'd be up for checking out walkable stuff like this, though!

Here are a few more. Note that these are NOT my photos, though I'd prefer to not reveal the source in public:

Those are cool. We don't have too many of those that I'm aware of. Unless you can help me find some for my area.

Good to see there's other people around Portland, I thought I was alone here. I've seen some of the places on your site, but I've had a hard finding any good abandonments here, seems their either torn down the day after I find 'em or their boarded up real well. Though Pirate Town looks cool.

Yeah, Pirate Town is fun. It has the major advantage of being wide-open, you can really take your time there since there is no security to worry about.. Thank you EPA!

I know it can seem difficult to find new sites, but they do pop up fairly frequently. It's sometimes helpful to look at the local papers. They tend to make references to places that have just been shut down, or are about to get demolished.

I keep hearing people talk about an old psych hospital that was shut down awhile (10 yrs?) ago in Portland. I can't find anything on Google about it, did it ever and does it still exist?

That shot is obscene. Meaning: out-stan-ding. Makes me think of the Time Tunnel, an old TV series if I remember right. Awesome infil man. Looks like it goes on forever.
