The Whitby Psych "Restaurant"???

I think that perhaps they could have turned some or more of the remaining Whitby Psych buildings into a charming restaurant or something like that...How about that ugly old house by the home depot, and the cinema there in Ajax? The Mc. Coy house or summat like that...They're turning it into office space...There are tons of restaurants which used to be handsome buildings like that in Boston, Massachusets...They could have refurbished some of those buildings...But I doubt such a business would get any customers, with the buildings' past...Who would want to be eating in the room that Cyril Rich was strangled in...Or imagine...The Ontario Hospital Mall...Who knows...We could have gotten creative and done something crazy...But it doesn't matter any more..They're pretty much all gone now...And the remaining two buildings that are there wouldn't have been very useful for any sort of business...Those two buildings are a little small, and cramped inside...Still...Could have been interesting...But perhaps you could have another argument of that...Shouldn't the Whitby Psych buildings have gone to a more noble use than stores...They would have been preserved...But imagine an "Aren't You Naughty" store being opened in one of the buildings...Or a McDonalds...What a waste of beautiful space that would be...So, then, maybe they shouldn't have been used for business...They deserved more than having greedy people use them every day to make more money to roll around in like pigs in shit...You could think of it like this: The Demolition of the Whitby Psych was like the cremation of them. The always will be remembered...But it would still be nice to have 'em...
How about: The Haunted Houses of Whitby...They could put fence all around the perimeter and charge people a fee to enter, and then they could go explore the buildings...They could post up plaques giving little historical blips about what went on in them...Still, going back to the last argument...Greedy people rolling in their money...It's such a controversial issue, with so many different arguments...Should they, or shouldn't have they turned them into business space...I don't know myself...

You left out the choice for using Whitby to serve as your hidey-hole for when you feel like having some sheep ass. Oh, then it wouldn't be a business. Sorry.

But, seriously, don't do polls, mkay? Especially on what pathetic little shopping kiosk can be carved out of a great and impressive old ruin, beloved by many. Like NB says, go explore something.

Now you listen, all of you...Before you tear me apart like a pack of dogs, why are YOU guys even with the psych any more...It's gone, and I think its a ruin...I am just trying to make a little bit of fun out of this...So if you feel that way, I'll go off, and find another hidey hole for me to get a little sheep ass...On the other hand, I understand that the whitby psych was a wonderful place, beloved by all; I never meant to tarnish its name...So don't take it personally.

Then you should be great friends with the spellcheck.

And I would think since your the novelist, you would know that big blocks of text strain the eyes and paragraphs and breaks alleviate that. Or maybe you do know this, but are too lazy to hit the enter button once in a while.

also TO KEEP ON TOPIC do you know what it would take to bring an abandonment up to code? pure insanity... but if i had to, why not a nice little club type thing, keep all the original abandoned charm, but spend the bazillion dollars to bring the festering pits up to code...

edit: oh an nightbird is a wankerette ;)

Ahh, yes...And, perhaps I am a bit lazy to hit the return key once in a while. But, please remember, I am quite accustomed to the typewriter. I'm used to typing on an Underwood Typemaster...Also, when I get into a rant, I forget that the return key even exists!

I voted for "Nothing, It shouldn't be built into a business space" Because I feel that what it was is far too superior to be turned into some low budget music store. All the history behind these buildings shouldn't be degraded to the likes of a music store. But the idea of a restaurant isn't too, too bad. The balconies on some of the buildings would make a nice overlook breakfast area, Looking out onto lake ontario and such.

Just my two cents

Yes i agree with you. Such a lovely place should not be turned into a business. You can't put a price on history, but it seems like you can now adays

Much as I would have loved to have seen the place turned into a museum, sadly that wouldn't happen (assuming the buildings weren't demolished). The costs of maintaining the buildings would be way too high and that would be a major problem for the tax payers. The only way around that would be to have a private contributor with very deep pockets to do this.

The idea I had tried to put forward when I had tried to save the place was to set it up like the Distillery District. Perhaps call it the "Medical District".

This would have seen cottages renovated into medical offices for doctors and clinics for the treatment of various medical problems (ie Chiropractic treatment, mental problems etc). The larger buildings (ie Building 19) could have seen other uses like rehab centres with the former workshop buildings being used for vocational training (which is what they were used for in the 1980s). Building 30 could have been renovated into suitable apartments for low income seniors. This could have remembered the site's former use and be a major contribution to the community that Whitby could have been proud of.

The biggest mistake I made was that I didn't start back in 1993 when those buildings were still active and being maintained. There would have been a better chance of the project being accepted since the buildings were in better shape then. The fund raising could have started in 1994 when construction for the current facility began and the project would have been started up when the current facility opened and the buildings were being shut down. With the proper timing, the utilities would not have been disconnected or if they were, for a relatively short period of time. Also, there would not have been time for the vandals and arsonists to speed up the decay of those beautiful buildings which led to their destruction.

F**king shame these buildings are lost. This would have been a great project and the benefits to the community would have been amazing. The rent from the medical offices and the political will generated from these benefits would have made it much easier to generate the necessary funding to maintain these buildings in perpetuity.

Damn! Where's a time machine when you need one?
