| | | McCoffee Experience™ on the corner of Yates and Quadra. Basement space. Connected to ultra-long/narrow passageway. I spoke with an employee of this McCoffee Experience™ place and was told of a heavy steel door in a sub-basement that is currently used as a storage something-or-other for paper napkins, stir-sticks, plastic lids, anti-scalding collars for mega heated coffee cups, assorted Brand-name accoutrements of said McCoffee Experience™ etc. I asked if I could take a peek at this door-way, but was politely told NO, which generally translates to 'Not on my shift.' Oddly, this space is not too far from the fabled Dead Zone cemetary that is alleged to be home to a false grave marker that opens to another ultra-long/narrow passageway. So...next time you're waiting for your double de-caf/half caf mocha caramel dowop-de-do latte with double foam and a sprinkle of cinnamon and/or chocolate, enquire about this mysterious storage space/door. You might get lucky.

| | | Posted by KublaKhan Aside from spiders (real or imagined) there's a new issue at hand, to wit: a certain building on Quadra and Yates that's undergoing some sort of transformation. It's been through a bit of reno work lately, and the previous occupant, some auto insurance outfit, has pulled steaks and moved on. The new occupant will sell the McCoffee Experience™...not naming names here, but there about 10 of these places within a few square blocks...and apparently, this building, presently in a gutted state of transition...all kicked out and rough and unpainted and generally unglorious...has some kind of below-street-level storage space that, rumour says, fits the description of the long/narrow/brick-walled etc. etc. and that this space extends down Yates and connects with a retail space. My information suggests that a previously discussed retro-clothing outlet has a similar below-street-level space, and that it runs to Douglas, cuts over Yates to Johnson and then runs back up Johnson OR runs down to Store St. The new information paints a similar story, but includes this Quadra/Yates space. I asked one of the construction guys working in what will be a Star...I mean, a coffee place...and he told me that there was indeed some hole-in-the-wall type opening in the lower level and that it did indeed run for what he thought was at least the length of the city block. He told me that a couple of city engineers checked the thing out and that it is likely going to be bricked off and back-filled soon. The construction guy said that if I wanted to see this thing for myself, I'd have to ask a) the building manager, or b) the site foremen, neither of whom have returned my requests for an inspection/tour. It's possible (as hinted by the construction guy in a somewhat oblique manner...all weird glances and shrugs and general body language etc.) that repeated requests made by a few determined people might persuade the aforementioned manager/foreman to permit a tour. Time isn't on our side in this respect. The coffee place is scheduled to open soon. I went down this morning around 8:30 and asked again, and was told to come back at the end of the week. I dropped by an hour later and spoke with someone else, and was told to come back on Monday. I figure that if I keep asking I might get in sometime before the first barrista pours the store's first latte. Well see. In the meantime, I plan on asking these guys every day until someone either tells me to fuck off or that I can go inside.
| Okay, so to partly dispel this, it is simply a large basement that extends fairly far. Raves were occasionally held there, by the person leasing the space. It extends into the area that has some bricked off spots. Lots of dead mice in the area, oddly... ewwww. This one doesn't have tunnels. I don't know if StarFucks (did I spell that right? ) connects at all to the basement nowadays, as I haven't been there in a bit. Whether it once connected to a tunnel or storage area under the Patch will never really be known now - the foundations that were dug for that new condo building were dug deep enough to have obliterated it.

| | | Well? Hmm... I'm assuming every single letter you wrote was cloaked in a veil of honesty so thick as to choke the Pope... The manager of McBucks (who have the most friendly staff btw) told me they do not rent the basement. As did the tennant next door. Very cool what you say about the basement. I have a number or two of the people in charge. I almost tried today to get permission to 'see the basement' There was an open door. I should have walked in. (Construction werkers whir doin their thang) Will give it a shot next week, now that you say there is a basement. Was trying to assess the age of the building, and determine if it really had any historical, eg: tunnelicious potential. The Batch does big time. Unfortunately those 5 foot 12 inch tall Alien girls, (NOT! from my planet) next door are very retentive about their basement. At least to me, sniff I hear that there is some connection to these buildings, at least as far as the Dom. I am skeptical as to whether the new McBucks building ever linked by tunnels. Who knows, do you, does anyone? And those mice; cute and crispy in comparison, wait till you encounter a keyboard width dead and dehydrated rat, or worse yet a live one. Cool post, tanks.

| | | Nah. Peterman and I were out yesterday afternoon for a couple of hours, sucking back coffee and cross referencing info, maps, etc. and came up with some rather interesting possibilities. A number of people have told me more or less the same story concerning a specific location, one of these people being closely connected with one of Victoria's older communities, and when Peterman and I drew all our info together, the place we were looking at actually checked out. There's something funny, odd, queer, and peculiar going on behind some rather ordinary and every-day type vendor fair. A cursory inspection revealed many eyes watching from every possible angle. All that security attention for inexpensive goods struck us as out of place. The focus of our interests proved difficult at first, but patience won the hour, and we finally got a very quick peek beyond a nondescript door in an unassuming place of business. This is likely the place where the whole story begins, where the rumours were incubated.

| | | So I'm hanging out at a generally peaceful anti-poverty protest today outside one of Victoria's best known abandonments, and the police are there, and protesters are there, and the media is there, and we're all waiting for something interesting to happen, and I turn to a woman who's yelping and hooting and so-forth, and I ask her, "Did the guy inside the building get in through one of the tunnels?" And she turns to me and says, "We won't tell anybody how he got inside." And then she paused and asked who I worked for, so I told her that I don't work for anybody, that I work for myself. And she says, "There is no tunnel into the building, but you're standing over one right now." So I look down at my feet, maybe expecting the street to open up and swallow me (no such luck), and I say, "You mean to tell me that there's a tunnel directly under where I'm standing right now?" And she smiles. She points up the street (Fisgard) and says, "From here all the way up there." "I don't belive you," I tell her. So she calls her buddy over and whispers something into his ear and he nods and says, "It starts at the foot of this street and goes up to Government and around and back and then down again to Herald St. It's about 100 years old." I nod. "Really?" "I was in there twenty minutes ago."

| | | Quote: "*note to self double check tide charts *" Dam right about that. I'm a drain rookie, but do know this. Never enter a drain from the ocean unless you have an exit further up, or know with extreme accuracy the tide is going way out. And there are those tricky half tides that double back without doing a full retreat. Heard a story about a couple of kids who tied their boat at the mouth of a drain, went way up inside, the tide came in, the boat was found. Parents contacted, assumed they drowned, but; a good ending, they popped up somewhere along the way. I bet they were grounded for like, until puberty. CT; Sounds like you might be from Vic, care to disclose your hometown, or your gender for that matter? No need to be shy around here. Oh, and about my previous pics. Kept a low profile on the location because they said come back next week, and we'll let you in when the electrical guys are here. All weekend I obsessed about having finally found the portal to the underworld. I visualized obese rats sucking the sweat from my socks, ripping tendons in their frenzy, angry ghosts, long dark spaces, block after block with no light, my batteries dying. And the construction workers accidentally? locking me in. Then forcing my way out from some manhole cover in the middle of the street. That iron biscuit, heavy as a 440 cubic inch engine, I finally erupt from the depths. Well, it was totally not like that; interesting, but less dramatic, a lot less unfortunately. I should have been at the Janion. Anyway, how was your day? Pic 3 is the way in. Pic 4 shows how a hole in the sidewalk under the front of the next building was filled in. Amazing how they just kept pouring, didn't even build a retaining wall.
