I started exploring empty buildings as a kid. Don't all kids explore buildings and anything else they can get away with? Most of the buildings were houses that were in the process of being built, not old buildings about to be demolished. Hey, we lived in a new suburban area. As we got older and more mobile with bicycles and cars we got into more 'trouble' looking into all kinds of places. We were just curious. I never did any damage and if any of my friends did I took them to task about it.

One of my first jobs after college dealt with doing asbestos inspections and inspections of facilities for regulations compliance. There were a LOT of empty facilities with asbestos, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, etc. It was Urban Exploration while being paid. Not all that exciting really as it didn't have that edge with the potential to be caught/punished.

The Madison, Wisconsin area has a few buildings now and then that are interesting to look into. Older buildings go fast here though. The older ones get torn down fast, rebuilt from the inside, or gentrified. New empty buildings go up all the time and stay empty for a loooong time. These are essentially empty shells though, not any more interesting than an empty pole shed.

Still there is enough to do. ForwardWisconsin has a website database of empty buildings (http://www.forward...and-Sites-Database) some new, some old, some being renovated. I do not know how up to date the database is kept though. Anyone know if they have completed renovation of the mill and brewery in Ripon? Maybe they are still interesting enough to go see.

The newspapers seem to be a great source of info too. Recently I remember reading that Royster Clark would be closing down. Maybe it already is. That is one big building that would be nice to see. Also last week the paper mentioned four empty properties on the square in Madison.

I'm trying to learn lock picking as it would be handy to use to get into some places I have an interest in seeing. I'm just starting but it has been a frustrating experience so far. I guess it just will take time.

It is nice to see what other folks are up to and the photos on the site are great.

Hi there!

I live in the Los Angeles area, and am willing to group up with anyone in my area who wants to go out to a site. I've been exploring for a long time, just never knew that it was an organized thing. I look forward to becoming an active member in the community here, and hope to add to the DB.

Cheers!

Evening all,

I've been getting into the guts of buildings since I was a kid. One of my earliest memories is my dad taking me into the mechanical room at his college, and I've been hooked ever since.

I've quietly managed to explore about 3/4's of the machine rooms, roofs, and other bits of my small Rutgers campus as well as the Lakeland Insane Hospital. At least, before the old complex was torn down. Thanks a lot, vandalizing, careless, call-attention-to-yourselves teenager. *END RANT* I am very interested in seeing more of south Jersey and Philadelphia.

This site is an incredible resource, and I feel a bit foolish for not having stumbled upon it sooner. It seems that this is a great safe haven for someone of our unique bent, and I hope to learn a lot from everyone here.

Greetings, I only found this site recently but I have been an intrepid UEer for a very long time - I am looking for people in Manhattan who need an additional team member with decent experience, did i mention i happen to have a grappeling hook just in case, anyways - this site is the best i've found on the subject and i just wanted to say thanks.

I wanted to give you guys a welcome statment, and an idea of how i think. 1st thing i'm called ZombieTunnelRat, for these reasons. I like Resident Evil (Zombie) and i'm known to wear a Military BTU, and carry a K-Bar knife. when i go exploring. (Rat) And i like tunnels/caves (Tunnel).

I don't really call myself a rookie, but what ever. I have explored abandoned houses, and I like drain tunnels and stuff. I'm into Automechanics. So i have tools out the A**. But my Mom and Dad are gunsmiths, so i also got my hand on exotic weapons(AK's, Colt Pythons, ETC), and exotic tools.

I'm with a group, and we are into infiltration. We like to go to places that are like Silent Hill, or Resident Evil. But we just like doing it in general. We have are own abriviations for stuff.

LP = LockPick
BC = Bolt Cutters
CT = Cutting Torch
K = Knife
OD = Opened Door (Used on Maps)
LD = Locked Door (Used on Maps)
Li = Light Switch(Used on Maps)
Ld = Ladder (Used on Maps)
LT = Laptop
DC = Digital Camera
VC = Video Camera

We like to keep it "Professional". We like exploring Abandoned House's, Hotel's, Factories, and expecialy Underground (Tunnels/Caves). Hope i fit into this fine community. Hope to learn some new techniques, and maybe give some advice.

I got 4X4 and chains. So if you want to explore that old farm way back in the woods, we can go ;)

Parts of Silent Hill were filmed in Lister. They used the Lister as the "Grand Hotel". The Lister is my most favoritest abandonment. Fuckers are gunna tear her down soon. I will cry. I love her so so much

Hi Everyone,
I'm another new member, but not new to checking out abandoned buildings, I've been doing it since my teens. Wish I would have photographed a lot of them that are now demolished but have quite a few shots saved of more recent tours, and look forward to sharing them one day here.
I'm 39, live west of left field in the middle of nowhere and a bit of a recluse (since I work all day then run my own business airbrushing at night). Apart from exploring buildings I also like checking out old graveyards and rock climbing and riding/working on my Sporty. I actually found out about UE from a member who emailed me about a paint job and it got me interested. Like many, I didn't know so many had this interest, since my friends just call me nuts and refuse to go with me.....
This looks to be a great way to find new locations to check out and a great site, I look forward to meeting the members here and checking out the galleries.
Cheers

Hi there, I'm new to the forums, but not new to the idea of UE. My name is Kelly, but most people know me by jellybeans. I live in Northern Ohio, and have always been intrigued by the "behind-the-scenes" stuff. I've visited a few places, but this was before I had a camera. I wish I had pics of some of the places I've been, as sadly access will not be so easy in the future. (For example, I took a tour of Lorain Palace Theater during their 100th anniversary.)

Upcoming trip to Chippewa Lake is planned, along with a couple of places around my town. I'll post pics as soon as I get them.

Anyone in the Northern Ohio area familiar with the Lorain County/Erie County area? If you are, this area is rich with places to explore. Probably one of the most well-known (and perhaps, overrated) is Gore Orphanage. If you do wanna check it out though, please let me know. I'd be willing to exchange info of this place (and a couple others) in exchange for new stomping grounds.

dsankt: In fact, the day I die yall are welcome to form an orderly queue and run a train on my eye sockets. I'll be dead and frankly, will not give a f*ck.
budda: That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Fuck me sideways this is insane.

Hey how's it goin? (Hey Ashley!) Just found this site, once again, for the first time in years, when I was searching for information on the Edgar Adult Occupational Centre I just visited on this past weekend. I haven't had quite much time these past few years to get in touch with my exploring side because of work and a new gf, but I decided to check out an abandoned town that my friends gf told me about, but it turned out to be an "adult occupational centre" what ever that was, I thought. Anyway anyon who has visited this place or anyone who knows what this thing is, let me know alright peace.

Welcome to the boards Just a little tip, not trying to yell at you on your first post, but usually stuff about specific locations should go in one of the regional boards. People are more likely to help you there.

Well, I just moved to Ottawa a couple of months ago and thought that since I was in the city that I would take up Urban Exploration as a hobby. It's something that I've been doing in rural areas (abandoned houses, burnt down factories, etc.) but you can only visit the same places so many times.

Hey all.

Pretty newish to UE here, I went into tunnels a lot as a kid, but at the time it was more screwing around than UE. Haven't been in a good one for years though, so I'm excited to be attending a university with a steam heat system. Feel free to talk at me!

Hi All

My name is James and I am from Edmonton, Alberta. I haven't explored since i was much younger where i used to easily be found in tunnels in St. Catharines, Ontario and through old abandoned buildings. I have a keen interest in Transit properties and old Streetcars (i actually volunteer with a local streetcar restoration society). All this for me is for the historical factor of the way things operate. I wouldn't mind getting back to a little touring around once i meet up with others from the area that are a little more experienced now a days... (when i was 10, over 20 years ago, it was a lot easier to explore as camera's and motion detectors really didnt exist even on new construction sites)

Hey guys

I found this site the other day by random chance and it just happens to be exactly what I had been wishing existed. To be perfectly honest I havent done too much UE. I have really just gotten into the hobby of going places I'm not supposed to for the challenge of it. I have managed to not only gain entry to, but also gain keys to every local area pool. I have also taken to exploring a lot of the new houses that have gone up in my area before they are sold. that kind of thing. But i have had a few run ins with abandoned buildings and tunnels and such and they are by far the most interesting, until I ran out of places. So I'm hoping to trade some technical advice for some location information. Anyone in the Washington DC area who wants to swap some info get in touch with me.
