The Janion was associated with the E&N Railway, but not as a station. It served as the offices for the railway. The station was next to it, when Store Street continued along to Johnson (before Pandora - actually Cormorant - Street was extended through to the bridge). Archival photos show trains pulling up between the Janion and the station (where the tracks still are today). In the 1960's, there was a bar/nightclub operating there. The 1975/9 City of Victoria heritage inventory lists the building as a warehouse.

Correction - before the lower part of Cormorant became Pandora, Centennial Square devoured another block of Cormorant (both in the mid-1960s), and prior to Cormorant/Pandora cutting through Store Street to the bridge.

The map is from 1861.

Interesting info on the Janion, and a great old map!...thanks all. Poor old Cormorant, a shadow of it's former self, but still hangin in. Found a great old shot of Bastion Square taken I think shortly before the big mid 60's reno. It slopes up gradually from Wharf Street. Seems likely there are hollow spaces under those level areas., may be of some interest.

The book is at Blns, quite new: VICTORIA, A History in Photographs. I hope it's legal to post info on publications, but not of course copyright photos. The photo is just about the last page in the book.

J.P. Your Avatar is freaking me out. I feel your pain, but not as much as you did. Is that Tremclad Primer on your shoulders or did you fall asleep during a sun storm?

Peace, here; and where I come from, ...no harm in dreamin.

We're interested. And fuck the International Copyright protections bullshit. We're into democracy here, and that means making info available to the public domain.

I was only referring to the rules of what I read about posting on this UE site. I'm very big on making info available to the public domain, especially from the Government. ("The Government that governs the least governs best") Edward Abbey; The KING of Anarchists in modern North America. Just read his books, you'll get it.

However, an individual has rights to his work, and that must; IMHO be respected. (And I will fight to the end to defend that) Am not amused that the latest book on Chinatown denies any existence of tunnels other than drains. How stupid are we? Not very actually. (Just look at earlier writings) This appears to be some kind of protective, 'yawn' strategy by someone who either doesn't know, or doesn't want to disclose the 'real' past. Or even worse is too lazy or imcompetent to do proper in depth, (ha ha) research. What is he afraid of at this point?

I respect and am sympathetic that there was ill treatment in past years, but no more. So cough up the truth dammit. The playing field has long since been leveled. Sweet Jesus, just look to the Mayors office, and that eye burning corporate POS plug at the new arena. All they care about is money, well I care about heritage. It's all about balance, can't save em all, but shouldn't nuke them all either. I'm not angry, just want the truth.

A.

Pictures of Bastion and Wharf - notice the trees in the center of the street - the current cement humps that have been referred to in previous posts replaced even larger concrete workings that were originally intended as part of a walkway that was to have arced across wharf street. The walkway was never built, and the current design replaced the foreboding cement walls that were there from the 1960s (or 1970s) up.

Also – a couple of shots of the Janion – the first from the late 19th century. Note the train beside the building. The second shot is from the 1970s, when the rails were still in place on Wharf Street.

The Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway terminal trackage ran beside the 200-foot-deep Janion. The building is fireproof and has 50 sizeable bedrooms. It opened in 1891 and was no longer listed in the Victoria city directory in 1984.

After its initial closure. The Janion Hotel was used for a variety of purposes. The E & N Railway Company had offices there from 1895 until 1948. After this it was used as a warehouse for a short period of time.

Wow, great info and photos of the Janion and area. I remember seeing the old Loco Motive easing up Store street a few times. Always enjoyed the weirdness of it, and a kind of link to street car days, which I wasn't around for. 'King of the Road' Ohh Yaa.

Quote from Gorbalskorp: "Are you referring to the symbology?"

(BTW, do you permit people to refer to you as 'Gorby')

Will attempt to answer this respectfully and briefly, have to admit I find it a tricky question. Apologies if my thread got a bit too loose, or edgy. ...Ahh, couple of Swans products, -(available opposite the strategically located glorious Janion Hotel (plug over)- can loosen the tounge, brain, and fingers on a keyboard. Am guessing it's not in the interest of this thread to get too political. However, politics helps shape the city, and affect issues which can result in empty buildings and homeless people...

IMHO, whoever can do the fairest, most competent and honest job in office that benefits 'the city', and the most people, regardless of income, race, gender or social status, personal beliefs, lifestyle, (planet of origin) etc., should be elected.

What the fuck is going on in this space now?

We walked by it today and there's all kids of big fence-type shit all over the place. And it's been bulldozed into a reasonably flat surface...kinda like a parking lot except without all the PAY HERE things that normally make a parking lot a parking lot.

Now it's just a big space with nice pale-brown dirt and a stack of old bricks (that, in all likelihood, will be sold as 'vintage brickwork' to wealthy people who are into vintage brickwork for their patios, etc. etc. etc.

A. Lien suggested that the space be used as a public park. Peterman suggested a nice big water fountain.

I suggested a hotdog stand with a wading pool.

Ya keep dreaming. I'd like to see a dozen hot naked girls doing jumping jacks but that's not gonna happen either.

Now lissen bitches, ah ahh mean friends I'm down wid da dawgs and the H20, but I just want to say, take waaannnnn look at Chi-ca-go... That is one city with big shoulders and big vision. What we got here is big time po-ten-shall. Now it might take sum 3/7/22 years for things to bounce back enough for developers to pull some bunny oughta da boler, and shake their money maker. Y'all know what I'm sayin?

In the mean time, we all gots tah plants some vegetables, (legal ones specifically I recommend) on da site to make it right. That big 'ol space can feed people, and make people c0mfortable in many ways. How about a big fountain and planted vegetables?. The place can be run by local volunteers, and the all natural edible products given to the local homeless people who will be encouraged to volunteer on the site, when and only when they choose to. Trust me, many will be drawn to it.

The amount of effort and cost, to make that site an urban oasis of healthy crop growin plentiful bounty is so minimal, it makes me smile... That scared fence that screams stay away, stay out, don't you dare walk on this corporate dirt patch, is an illusion, a tidy but sad joke, a smear on the horizon. A theft of what could be an oasis of happy people. I don't give a fuck who owns it. Where are your hearts you corporate pig dogs? Please, quickly, put up some razor tape, please guard your dirt patch.

That site must be protected from intruders. (And don't bluff us about da bricks, a fence around the remaining facade will keep you safe with the lawyers).

Otherwise we might walk on the ground, we might look at the heritage buildings and dream of renovations, of fair cost housing, of history exposed as is, -with no manipulation-, it's called 'heritage restoration'...

God forbid someone might enjoy the place without paying an admission fee. Please give this some thought, I know you are not all infected with the corporate disease, the 'profit is all that matters' mentality that poisoned the new arena.

A sad irony, that the name of the arena implies people could be fed, and not go to sleep hungry... Think of the cost; for 2400.00 dollars there could be 100 yards of premium topsoil delivered to the site where this upscale housing venture failed. Even less than 40 yards would do the job...

if anyone hear is interested in the apparent "underground tunnels" here in victoria, i have quite a bit of information of different entrances...
me and my boyfriend went searching all day yesterday,
we found 4 entrances, they're really scary, but i dont think a couple of them have been found by many people, there's no graffiti, or garbage or anything, and its pretty much completely hidden in a foresty area.
