Secret Sidewalk in Niles Canyon, SF Bay Area

okay, i can't believe nobody's posted about this, but perhaps it's too "child's play" for you veterans...
Anyway, I happen to love the Secret Sidewalk. It's the remains of the Sunol Aqueduct, and runs all the way through the canyon (above and below ground), from the sunol water temple to a pumping station off mission blvd.
Local kids go there on weekend nights to misbehave. It's covered with decades of graffiti, has lots of broken parts, and is generally really cool looking.
I've been there twice and am itching to go again (speaking of itching, beware of poison oak; it's covered with the stuff). The part that i've been to is the fremont side, and is difficult to reach, though there are a few ways to approach (at least 4 that I know of). Also near the section that I've visited is the remains of an abandoned brick factory. Only piles of bricks and 3 tall smokestacks remain, though the whole building was there a dozen years ago.
Pictures from my first expedition (not taken by me) are here: http://gallery.med...com/secretsidewalk

My second expedition had a purpose; b/w nudes for my photo class, so I didn't get many pics of the location itself, but I did come away with this one:

I need to go back, because the picture doesn't show the fact that I was standing in the middle of a giant causeway, 60 feet or more above the ground.
The exact location of the picture is here: http://local.googl...n=0.001424,0.00339

The section of the sidewalk near the brick factory is broken up, and then disappears through the hill. It reappears on the other side and follows the road for a good distance. I'm not sure how far it goes in that direction but I intend to find out soon (before the hills are completely brown)

When I was researching that brick factory I also came across the sidewalk. Both look interesting to me, but I haven't had a chance to check it out in person. Thanks for opening the discussion on it, and maybe other people here have been there.

Saw the "Obligatory Flower Shot" but where is the "Obligatory Toilet Shot"?

Is that a big square pipe making up the sidewalk and walking on top, or just concrete built up like that?

hmm. toilet shot? We didn't see any toilets. There was a bicicle in a tree, though. Should have taken the obligatory poison oak shot when my mom's arm got a reaction a week later, but I didn't have the presence of mind. ;)

it's a big square pipe, reinforced with rebar. It's about... 5 feet high, but there are many points where the dirt comes right up to it. There are bolted-down access panels every... hundred yards or so (but they're huge bolts and all rusty, so there's probly nothing interesting inside even if you could get in, and there's a big hole in the top at one point (by "big" i mean that i could probably get in it if i spent a few minutes squeezing through, and I'm 5' 8" and almost 200 lbs)

Found some arguably better pics of the causeway here:
(umm. actually, i can't find that link now. seems to be down forever. nuts. now i'll have to go take the good pics of the causeway myself)

Couple not so great pics here:

Interesting location. Thanks for posting.

Do you know if there's much light from parking lots, street lights, etc.? I'm wondering about light pollution at night.

Dunno. i've heard that it's pitch black, though low clouds could bounce city light in. there are no parking lots; it's about a mile from anywhere with running power, though the road is visible from many parts, so headlights will be visible.

I've seen the brick factory and I never knew that's what it was... I had a unterribly fun encounter with some resident guy that lives along the river. He accused me of jacking up his wiring, camera(s), alarms, arson, graffiti and I don't know what else. I'm a home movie star now, too. Thanks for pointing out the secret sidewalk; I was so close, but, heh, didn't know the existence of. Welcome!

p.s. Just rereading your initial post. Definitely not "too child's play" at all. Looks like a very interesting place and I hope to see it in the future.

um I went there like 10 years ago. Its interesting if you like a concrete path covered with graffiti. Bring a twelver and it could be interesting. I didnt see the smoke stacks on the other hand, those could be cool.

Well, I like a 5-foot-high concrete path with a non-obvious purpose, spanning a 100-foot deep ravine with a 300-foot arching concrete causeway. I also like strange rebar-constructed gates that don't keep anyone out. I like the fact that the path is in utter rubble and ruin for the last 200 yards of it, also from a non-obvious source.

The smoke stacks were so huge that we didn't go down to look at them; we knew we wouldn't get any pictures that would do them justice, and we were more interested by the sidewalk.
If the brick factory building was still there, i'd be more into it, but it was demolished for housing that never went up. ;(

The aerial photos seem to show large piles of bricks. There's a rumor that all the bricks (made in the factory)/(that the factory was made of) have "Niles" stamped into them. Would be interesting to scavenge one of those, but I'm not sure how i feel about looting an urban archaeological site. heh. I'll probably just leave it be. or take pics next time i go, if the bricks are of the rumored variety.

Sounds cool to me. Light it up and it could be real fun. Meet up with some degenerate youth and you wouldn't even have to pay for models.

I haven't been to Niles Canyon & the 'Secret Sidewalk,' but before I found our beloved UER web site here, I did a Google search on Niles Canyon, & just FYI, there's all sorts of idiots claiming some demon lives inside the 'secret sidewalk' & sometimes jumps out & molests people.

Also there's talk of a 'secret government base' in the area, but been there, done that -- it's just an old electromagnetic compatibility test site for a military contractor.

FInally, I guess in the early 1900s, Charlie Chaplin filmed some movies in Niles Canyon, and that area *almost* became the movie production capital of the USA (instead of Hollywood).

There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

I'm another one of those idiots who's obsessed with this place and I'm not ashamed of perpetrating the weird stories. In 1998 I started a bulletin board about it. I got many weird replies, some are downright hilarious. all of them, no matter how strange, add to the rich lore of this location. I love to hear the ghost stories and tales of witchy goings on. the bulletin board is inoperable at this point but can still be viewed here-
