To get to the plant, you have to take the trail past the iron mill brick ruins (pretty cool, but tiny) until you get to a bridge with a path leading off. Follow the path for a very short ways and you reach the location. First thing you'll see is building where only the first floor is easily accessable where you can see where, at one time, electrical equipment was housed (check out the ceramic insulating pipe on the walls) but its now covered in the worlds crappiest graffiti. On the opposite side of the building, the side you did not approach, is where the stairwell used to be and a few windows in which one can see maybe a desk or something and, well, more graffiti but slightly better quality perhaps. Another building, the main part I believe, has become just a huge room with 3 large concave metal peices on one wall, one with the middle's cover missing and is easy to slip into. Inside of that is a really serene room with a gaping 10 foot concrete hole surrounded by water. Underneath is the water outlet, probably not much to see there after years of floods since the site was abandoned in '63, but I didn't check since i had no rope and there were pointy branches and rusty metal rods poking out of the darkness. The roof of this main building looked like the most intresting part but is blocked off by a baricade (though people have bent the wire in it off so you could climb it).

Another way to get to the top (I think) seems to be a long, narrow (about 1.5 foot wide) concrete ridge that comes to the building where particle collectors used to sit perhaps. If you'd rather not climb the baricade and risk a 12 foot fall, you can get to this narrow ridge by going past a large, half buried, metal pipe following the path under a wall through a short pipe and following the path for a bit (my memory is a bit fuzzy here for perfect details but you won't need them its obvious) until you get to a main park trail. All you must do is turn left and follow that trail for a little bit until you find a concrete wall with gaurd rails, go to the corner of it, and hop the rail onto the concrete ridge and walk back about the same distance. I'm not sure if this is practicle or not since trees might be grown up around it and onto it, but it did look like it came back into the plant.

All in all, it was pretty damn cool and I recommend everyone go check it out, it'll only take an hour. Go in the morning, no stupid drunk teens with crappy graffiti will be there. Bring a rope, bring your camera, bring a friend and have fun. And please, please, please don't add any more bad graffiti.

On my way to work this morning I noticed smoke coming from the Lucky Strike chimney:

...and later I enjoyed the cold and silence of this empty room in an empty house...

I have been in the Lucky Strike building like 10 times at least the power is on on the inside and alot of lights are on. Its mostly just trashed office space but there are a few cool rooms. It looks like there using the down stairs for storage and soon there is talk of turning the whole place to condos. Check it out while it last.

I've explored quite a few condemned and abandoned townhomes and smaller buildings in Richmond, some of them are cool. I currently have few pics of them, but am working on getting more.

For anyone who's interested, I went to Belle Isle today and found the building. There was an absurd amount of graffiti there, an obnoxious amount of large (and I mean like pinky finger sized) wasps in one area, and a few hard to reach areas that I couldnt get to without atleast another person, if not a rope. It was quite obvious this place has been visited many times, but like most places with heavy traffic, there was a fairly good reason for it.

This is the view from the bridge I mention, showing the second building you will come to.

Here is the first building, very small. Theres a really intresting hallway on the opposite side of this however.

Horrible shot... But this is the second building, the main room. On the wall not shown are the three concave metal peices, in which there is a very intresting room... No way to take a picture of it to describe what I mean.

The other pictures didn't come out well enough to be of any use to anyone, but rest assured this is an intresting trip.

[edit for horrific grammer ]

I was under the impression that this place was public as in part of the park.

...What is an ULUZ??

And why would smoke come from the Lucky Strike chimney, when it's only being used for storage? I don't understand ...

Sorry, I probably forgot my <sarcasm> tags.

It's not a worry with this place. Access is completely unrestricted, it's in the middle of a public park. No attempt has been made to block entry.

Richmonds few good places are over explored by everyone; everyone here, all the local kids, etc. Ive heard hundreds of stories about the abandoned hospital, belle isle and lucky strike... The times-dispatch ran an article a few weeks ago about a tunnel once used for mining, if memory serves. It touched on UEing around town, but didnt talk about anywhere everyone here hasnt.

You can still go a ways into the Church Hill Tunnel from the eastern entrance before you reach the wall. Most of the original tracks & ties are still there, it's pretty cool. The tunnel's flooded with waist-deep water though.

And there are a bunch more Richmond locations that haven't been over-explored... but most are of the underground variety.

Obviously we don't go to the same places.

The best places I've seen are almost un-explored.

I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.

So many UE relics have been destroyed or converted over the last few years in Richmond. Even the Fulton Bottom relics were dozed to put up miniature McMansions. In the early nineties you could throw a stone and find a relic to navigate through, but those were the last of any consequence. While the tunnels under MCV are numerous, with 9/11, you WILL go to jail if found in nearly any of them. Can recommend the remnants of the coal mine entrances in Chesterfield, but unless you're into spelunking, you'd be doomed getting worthwhile pix.

There is an interesting site off of the north side of Patterson at the junction of 288. It was called Oak Hill country club back in the day. A large eastern european Jewry contingent, unable to get into Lakeside, started their own club. It closed when all of the old country Jews died and Lakeside needed "New" money. Nice course and 50's style clubhouse. All vacant now. Access is through the rear, off of the Cap1 parkway.

You can also be patient and wait for Cloverleaf to implode in about a year.

One of Richmond's best has only been explored by a handful of people, most will never hear of it. (Interested? PM me.)

I think thats the one I've heard a little about. What can you tell me about the tunnels/ drains whatever you're referring to? I was in Richmond this afternoon, around Hollywood cemetary, just kind of poked around the mausoleums. Nothing there.

Sounds cool, is this in Petersburg or Richmond?

Be sure to take pictures!
