Whatever.

This is how I see my participation in the UER forum: I am a guest, AV owns the site. Period.

My membership to this forum is based on Av's discretion. Not any different than any other membership-based club. So long as I don't fuck the secretary, steal from the bar, piss in the shower (and/or fart in the sauna), or use the Chair's parking spot, my position (whatever it may be) is neutral.

so, in a nutshell, av's trying to put in a managerial system, while retaining ownership rights. not an uncommon practice. my boss owns the store i work in, and has me to run day to day operations for him. he still has final say if we wanted to say...change the paint color, put in seating, add or remove things, change the music format...anything other than ordinary basic day to day operations have to be cleared with him first. why? because it's his store! he has me to manage it, not pretend it's mine and change it.

so what's the big deal? everyones sticking on av maintaining the right to say "there are certain things you wont be able to do" but it's his site. he owns it.

so quit fighting and figure out who wants to run the joint so the owner doesn't have to be here every minute. the issue of the ldb has been addressed by the powers that be, so figure it out already.

i have no input as to who should do what, because i'm only here sporadically and really don't know who most of the people here are.

having said that, i do have one question? remember this is curiosity based only. WHO exactly is going to do the voting? the entire forum? the mods? elswho?

Just to throw my 2 cents in worth, I think that the LDB should have a maximum of let’s say 100-200 pictures. And after a year of being demolished a site would be removed from the system. Both would greatly reduce the system requirements and maintenance of the board and lower the hard drive space requirements a lot. There should be LDB moderators for each state that should divide up the work on keeping it up to date. And personally I could live without the LDB photo comments. if I have read one more time how a dead squirrel looks like Phyllis diller I am going to kill myself. As for self deletion of pictures, when you take a picture, it is by default under your intellectual right’s automatically, just like movie scripts, so if for example you wanted to keep a picture up here with out the consent of the original owner just make sure your EULA cover’s this. It will save headaches in the future. I don’t tend to post very much, but love this site and come here everyday and just thought I should put my option in.

Okay, I didn't read everything mostly because I don't care to read the same thing 50 times. My $0.02. I was a member of UER long before most. I don't feel this gives me any more rights, respect or position than anyone else.

What I'm saying is that I don't care if you have 1 or 1000 posts, you should be viewed the same way. We were all "newbies" at one point.

That said. UER was supposed to be a community effort to share stories and locations. If it were my decision alone to make, I would close all the forums. That is to say, not delete them just lock and inhibit future ones. I would keep the LDB and allow one forum topic per location so people can discuss. Then, keep private boards and keep it to the particular moderator to look after them. Keep the chat as well.

And don't take anyones bullshit Av. Its you're site, nobody elses. If people don't like how you choose to run it, they can go away. If people don't "approve" of the LDB, they don't have to contribute.

And don't EVEN try to pull legal bullshit about having pics on there. Once you post it, its public domain unless you specify elsewhere.

Eh when I started posting on UER, there was only the main forum (no regional board, other board or even less private boards) and there were about 15 active members.
No UEDB, no toolbar. The place used to rock back then. So simple, but so true to the UE spirit.
I still enjoy UER, but it became way too big.
I fully understand Av, Uer is becoming a monster.

Agreed.

That said, a location I checked out and photographed went up in flames 24 hours after I posted my pics. THEN the pics I posted ended up on the local 6 o'clock news. Different issue, but worth considering, nonetheless.

From that point on, I decided to keep my locations either within Full Members Only, or not post them at all, and keep whatever information I have among known and trusted UE's.

Personally, I'd prefer that whatever Full Members Only (or whatever it's called) locations I've photographed and posted remain Full Members Only. After all, if I wanted them to be part of the public domain (proper) I wouldn't have bothered to keep them within that category.

But whatever. Not my decision.

the way i see it, AV is like O-brian on deep space nine (yeah i know im nerd) if he leaves, no group of people or commity will be able to hold a candle to the amount of blood and sweat that AV has poured into this site. and we are all driving him away

that being said i'll leave you all to your bickering and fighting now.

I have to be honest and say that the idea of a council of some kind just doesnt sound like a good idea considering how much dissension there seems to be in the ranks. It could take forever to get the simplest thing done.

I wonder if AV could simply appoint someone he trusts and everyone else will just have to learn to live with it. Maybe the place just needs someone who is willing to take the stress, hostility, basically all the bullshit, and run with it?

CD,
I don't think the community would accept any other leader than Av or their own representatives. We're too diverse and used to Av to simply accept another one-man-team.

I've read this whole thread up to here. All I can say is I'm glad I'm half a world away and that I'm a very little fish in a rather large pond.

I'll keep watching, and I'll keep exploring, whatever happens, but it'd be sad to see this house burnt down by the tenants. Burnt out structures are rarely interesting sites.

you people ARE aware that this is nothing but an internet forum, right? it's not real life. it's not important enough to fight over or to lose any sleep over. you're clear on this right? just checking.

if you guys can't have fun with these "elections" and treat them in a logical manner, ie: as something that could be fun and interesting with regard to the structure of a forum you belong to

then you're taking it all much too seriously. people are getting all heated, mods are deleting any post that attempts to laugh about it, as if humor is somehow degrading the great solemnity of what is a very serious affair. it's not a serious affair. it's mock elections to readjust a forum, and if you like the forum and get excited about it that's awesome, but taking it as a real political event of great import and gravity..well that's just absurd.

lighten up a little bit.

oh and read this quick, someone will wipe it out for it's lack of reverence extraordinarily quickly i'm sure, and i'm probably risking being banned for subversive behavior or some such, because pointing out that this is an internet forum, and should be fun and lighthearted rather than stressful and hostile is akin to treason in the minds of some, this i know.

I posted this in the elections board, but it's worth repeating here.

I was on the inside from way way back, and I'll give this advice. No way should the *head* of the site, be one person. The stress and targetting you take from everyone (whether on purpose or without meaning) is mind boggling here. I made a point of pushing so that I'd get as much of the shit aimed at me instead of Av, and even that didn't deflect enough of the arrows that get fired.

A council/board/whatever you want to call it is probably the best option for a few reasons:

Distributed stress; it's not all one person taking the heat.

Rational decisions; no one person having more say than any other on the council means as fair a system as is possible here for coming to conclusions.

No power trips; with all council members all sharing equal value, everything voted upon, means no one person power tripping.

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

Jester's right.

We are in the middle of something big here, never have I ever seen someone in an administrator role resign and turn it over to the membership.

But as Dev and many other's having pointed out this is a message board, which is true, but the people behind these posts are really what matters, we are the community, we are why this place has been put in place in the first place. UER is just a tool, a very important tool. It's been admitted that something in it has broken, and all you do (save a few dedicated individuals, and you all know who you are) is bitch, moan and complain. I have only seen a few posts in here that are constructive.

Forget about the LDB, Forget about trying to bring Av back, Forget about all the shit that's gone on in the past. We have a chance to take a hold and shape the future of UER.

We have a chance few ever have, we stand among legends, many of us have had a chance to meet these. Ninj, Jester, Av, Mike Dijital to name a few. Dedicated individuals all brought together in a common interest. Our common interest, and we are presented with a wonderful tool, UER, Deggi5, the Wraiths, Cave Clan, and many, many others. Now we can shape UER for the future.

Why don't we let Av go. For something to change, there needs to be a reaction. Well this is it, this is the fire. Who will stand with those who care?
