While insightful, it's not universal. Everyone has a breaking point and Av seems to have reached his.

In a perfect world, I'd love to see Av stay on. The only times I haven't been happy here is when I've had to watch snippy bullshit infighting and when that happens I change the channel, so to speak. Unfortunately, Av's been stuck on this one station for far too long and he's decided that he's done. It's a bummer of a decision, but it appears that he's made it.

I wish Av could stay where he is, but I'm certainly not going to try to force him to.

If you want to solve the problem, the division in our hobby, get rid of the LDB.

That's fine, but do you understand why that's not going to happen? Maybe this is the first time you guys are discussing it, but the impression I get is that you've been through this a million times. If you have been through it, then it seems obvious that Av is not going to eliminate it, and he controls it. So, arguing about it and making everyone miserable isn't going to help anything.

Posted by ChuckThat is how you solve the LDB issue, that is how you bring everyone together too.

Right, and that isn't going to happen, so let's try to work within that framework.

Posted by ChuckIt may also help to get rid of all the "Flavor of the week" members, but that isn't really possible.

Of COURSE it is. Other sites have already done it. However, I am betting that the owner of the site isn't on board with that idea so, again, why argue about it?

Posted by ChuckIf you don't have a problem with the LDB, you are ignorant and really have no care or love for the hobby.

This kind of thing is not productive and will not help fix anything or resolve issues. If you're just going to write off everyone who has a different opinion than you, then you guys can go on arguing.

Posted by ChuckFlame all you want, I've said it before and I will say it again, the best part of Urban Exploring is EXPLORING!

Don't know if this was aimed specifically at me or not but if it is then I am NOT trying to flame. I am just coming at this from a different perspective and trying to inject some reason and facts into the debate. You guys just seem like you've got so much history going into this...you're not hearing eachother...you're just lobbing bombs.

You "love it or leave it" people sound like my government.
Sad that.

And I hate that attitude in government too, but this ain't a government. It's a website owned by a person who is sick and tired of the shit he's dealing with, but in the end, he owns it, he controls it, he has to deal with it. So, when it comes down to it it's just plain not your decision. I'm 100% on board with you airing your concerns but what I think people need to accept is that in the end after it's all said and done it's Av's way or the highway. You can deal, or you can not deal. Simple as that.

This is one of Av's best April fools Jokes.

I wish.

I hate to see it all fall apart for a bunch of people acting like baboons running around beating their chests. I for one will miss it when it's gone, and want to thank AV for hours of enjoyment this forum has given me, and for allowing me to host some of my explorations in the LDB.

I hope we can manage to keep UER together before it fractures into a hundred splinter boards and regional groups. Everything everybody is complaining about will be even more pronounced on each of those resources. With the exception of being able to view photos of other users explorations of places I will NEVER get to see in person.

IMHO- if you don't like the LDB. Do not post. Do not browse.

If you are concerned about a flood of newbie activity at one of your favorite locations:

DON'T POST IT in the LDB. Get a little storage space, cobble together some HTML, and if you want to share with somebody, send them a link.

If you have done things right people won't be sure if you have done anything at all.

Yeah, I love how everyone jumps on the "Just don't use the DB" bandwagon without actually reading the posts or taking the time to understand the issue.

One thing I have never understood... why would you even want to add something to the ldb, or forum, and then go back later and retract it? If at some later time your going to decide suddenly to take your ball and go home, then you shouldn't have posted sites in the first place. The logic behind what is being suggested is that I will post my sites for you to enjoy as long as you don't piss me off or offend me. If you do, I'll take my toys away. I don't think that makes sense.

you're right, that doesnt make sense. but i think that what often happens, is people come into this and they're all excited about it. they're all amped up and they want to show people what they've found and where they've been. they tell everyone, they show it all...but gradually as they become more deeply involved and more adept at the hobby, they learn the value of keeping things a little quieter. you keep locations longer the fewer people know about them.
people develop this ue sort of lifestyle and they learn to become selective about where and with who they share location information. and that is when the majority of people (i'm not saying that grudges and pissfights dont come into play too, just that it's not always an attitude thing) will decide that they'd like to take something down. maybe somethings become sensitive and they'd rather not have it available to so many people. maybe they just have crossed onto the path of caution.

and stating at the outset that anything you put there will remain there and will not be removable doesnt help. saying "if you post here make sure ahead of time it will be regret free because you cant take it back" wont work on new people who are still way excited about it all. they wont be able to imagine wanting to take anything down.

i can see why people get itchy over the ldb. after a certain point attitudes change, but this database does'nt allow for that change.

and is there a fix for that? not really.

This thread is not about arguing over the validity of the LDB. If you wish to do that, do it elsewhere. If there is anymore off-topic posting about the LDB, it will be deleted. If these elections have any chance of working, we need to be focusing on that and not arguing over this stupid crap.

it would seem, though, that the ldb, who would have control over it, and speculation about avs ability to relinquish control over it, is directly related to these so called elections. if you dont let people hash it out, how do you figure they'll decide? the ldb is a big concern for a whole bunch of people, or so it seems, and it's the question of the day with regard to the elections. how is that off topic?

delete away, but perhaps before you do you could answer the question?

Hopefully this post will answer your concerns about the LDB.

To use the house analogy, I am renting you the house. I don't want any rooms demolished or any walls destroyed.

To translate this analogy to the forum: I will not support any administration that says "Delete the LDB"; "Delete the Forums"; or even "Take the whole site down.". These are not solutions, these are simply rash and unthoughtful actions.

Yesterday, Kowalski messaged me in private. He said (paraphrasing) "Av, if you're not going to delete the LDB, will you consider making these changes to it?"

My response was "Yes! I think there is real promise in your ideas. I'd like to see them discussed further, and I'd like to see a solution come out of them."

Kowalski has the right idea. The LDB is a great tool, and there are simple things that can be done to address all of your concerns. I expect these ideas to be discussed in other threads.

To help you understand the LDB, I will quickly elaborate on the reason I created it. Surprisingly, it was actually not my idea -- the very general idea came from a friend Tekriter, and I was inspired by UECanada in how to format the data fields.

The concept behind the LBD was simply to provide ALL explorers worldwide with a place to share information, photos, and stories about a particular place. The key word here is SHARE -- it is not supposed to be a soapbox where you can display your work behind a glass case and take it home when the gallery no longer suits you. It is supposed to be a collaborative effort.

You can liken it to the Wikipedia -- If one person writes an article about Potatoes, and someone else comes along and adds & edits it, does the first person have the right to say "Hold on, I don't want my article there anymore!"? What if the edits were never made? When you write for the Wikipedia, it is understood that you are sharing your words and not simply leasing them.

Hopefully this helps the understanding.

Av has answered your question for me. I'm not looking to squash any questions you guys feel are important to the elections, but if all you're going to do is sit here and argue over whether or not the LDB should exist, it can be done in another thread.

Fortunatly, this isn't how I want it at all. I think i've made it quite clear that I have no interest in veto power.

geeez, maybe I'm a little slow, I don't know. I would have thought a community of people who are apparently interested in exploring, would have been people that I could trust and not worry about every little friggin thing. I'm beginning to see that no matter what is put out there someone is going to piss on it. No wonder after a while the mods become freaks. I gotta go take some tylenol.

Yea, reason and a sense of cooperation are definitely out the window. I tried to lay out the facts as they stand and bring some sense of rationality to the debate but that's not what everyone wants. They'd rather bicker and continue old grudges. Whatever, doesn't matter to me. I'm completely fine with the way things are run. I just hope the elections don't end up letting the patients run the asylum.
