Enough already!

Damn, you guys and your problems with the LDB. If you dont' like it, don't contribute. Run your own sites, stay to your current exploring partners, and keep your little piece of exploring to yourselves. Fine. Just let it go here on UER for pete's sake.

This is about elections. State a case for yourself. Tell us all what you are going to do that is new and wonderful and great. Lets not bog down with the same old tired arguments.

I have changed my personal exploring ethics code. From now on it will be: "Take only aimed shots, leave only hobo corpses." Copper scrappers, meth heads and homeless beware. The Jonsered cometh among you, bringing fear and dread.

Please read my post more carefully.

Maybe I am not making myself clear.

I no longer want "control". I do not WISH it. I am trying to give it to someone else.

But at the same time I do not want to see the contributions others have made to this site erased because of small-minded individuals.

I think the problem with UER could be the database. But if Av-x isnt the figurehead, you'll get a council of "heroes of ue" to make more drama with their inflated ego's, thus nothing changes. Why? because a popularity contest decides these "elections". Fucking hell people, I really think you need to take a step back and see how amazingly pathetic it is to have politics play a role in a fucking hobby *or lifestyle for some*.

Get over yourselves. We should be bonded by common experience and interest, not by government.

For example, if the council decides that pornography is to be allowed, I would have to say "No", because that's a decision that is out of my hands.

Let me get this straight...

Av has complete control of UER.

...people complain.

Av offers to give up control of UER, only acting as a check to make sure those who control it aren't being ridiculous.

...the same people complain.

Bloody freakin' hell, people. The fact he's even offering this considering it IS his site should be a great sign. He's offering an olive branch for peace in the UE community, and people are still giving him hell.

What do you guys want? If you don't like UER, why are you still here? That's not to say that I don't want you guys contributing, as you're good explorers, but why are you trying to change UER so much?

As Av says, the DB, for instance, is a huge part of UER. What will getting it taken down accomplish? Making UER less popular, and having a new site start up that DOES have a DB to split the community further. And if the DB was taken down, I'm telling you right now I'd start a new one elsewhere for those who wanted it, and damned if I'd go through the effort Av does to put full member restrictions in place. So if the DB gets taken down, what does it accomplish really, other than making locations less protected, further segregating the community, and lowering the appeal of UER?

Av's made it clear that it's not going anywhere, yet people still complain. It's fine criticizing when necessary. You don't like the DB? Okay, mention why. You don't like how Av overrules everything? You can say that too. But it's no longer constructive when Av's made it clear that the DB is going nowhere and people continue to complain...

...I'm sorry, I've just had a long day and needed to rant. It just annoys me when Av's actually trying to do something good for the community and still has to take shit for it...

Jupiter, your ass kissing is a little creepy....

Anyway, I made it very clear why I don't like the LDB.
If you want to leave it up, fine, but let people who want to remove content remove it.

If anything it should be made clear that once you contribute a location/info/photo it is no longer yours, it is UER's.

1. There are reasons to make a site about a hobby. A good reason is to share ideas and concepts and to meet like minded people. that part CAN be accomplished via UER. Unfortunately with any hobby people feel like they have to have status. That's why uer and deggi and plenty of other forums fail. having elections only continues the popularity contest and should have absolutely nothing to do with exploration.

2. I am still here to contact the serious explorers. I have explored with many people becuase of uer. if uer didnt exist i'd find them via deggi5. if deggi5 didnt exist i'd find them in a yahoo group. its a way of communicating and planning a social aspect of the hobby.

3. Probably not much. there are databases of sorts all over. this one just makes information easier therefore people who aren't invested in the hobby can go fuck with a "big" location.

4. While I have made DB locations, it does what I mentioned above. the only reason i have locations up there is because the S(ue) crew hasn't gotten a good alternative to pass pictures. We fully admit, we exploit the ldb. I am a minority in that group as in I wont do a location anymore.

5. You're annoyed because you, like many of us, came here to be a part of a discussion about exploration and our love for it. none of this crap serves that purpose.

I hate all of you

The exact opposite of this is true. You have full control of your photos at all times, and can remove them without intervention. At any time you can ask a mod to also remove your photos.

Please check the TOS to see what UER's actual policy is instead of what you think it is.

You know, you could have finished the paragraph. I know you've mentioned it before, my point is that if Av's decided he's not changing this, there's no need to harp on it.

And by the way, I am proud you managed to assume because I back Av up on this one thing, I'm just kissing his ass. I guess that means your lips are placed firmly against Jester's... I frequently get annoyed at Av. See my latest location created in the DB you're so opposed to. But that doesn't mean I'm just going to disagree with everything he does as some people do.

So you're saying that if a public vote / popular opinion were clearly against one of your favorite features, your own opinion would prevail as it has in the past? It sounds kind of like that little issue a while back that no one's allowed to talk about.

The following is an off-topic PSA regarding some UE DB misconceptions, and should be ignored as a thread locking excuse.

You lose control of a location you've created as soon as someone else contributes to it. Once you put something on there, it's pretty much there forever, even if you later decide it was a bad idea to post. Even if you did all the initial research and provided most of the content, you don't get to remove your content (other than photos) once another person has some kind of "investment" in that site. Such an investment can include historical info, incredible artistic photography, or blurry exterior photos and a story of drunken hobo harassment. You can delete your photos, but deleting content you've written somehow ruins things for people who can't do their own research.

This works out fine if you know about it, but it requires everyone to think carefully about the entire lifespan and potential future impacts of a DB entry. As a new member, you may feel that everything you know of should be added, but as you explore for a while you could realize that sites are being damaged or locked due to added publicity. Your own level of caution for how much information to make available could also change over time, but if you weren't conservative about it to begin with, you probably won't be able to remove information from the DB without a huge fuss.

This is another prime example of why I avoid reading the forums most of the time.
Some of you seem to find a way to argue and complain about everything, and I must say it is very annoying.

If you dont like the DB, dont look at it. How freakin hard is that?
And I agree with AV's stand on that, some of us put quite a bit of work into it, it would be wrong to just delete everyones work.

Ok, now all you whiny, bitching, people can complain some more.

For the last two or three years, UER has been a major part of my life. I have visited the site almost daily during that time and I have immensely enjoyed the sights I have seen, the friends I have made, and the discussions I have been a part of in that time. If it weren't for Avatar-X putting all of the time and dedication into the site that he has, I suspect many of those things would not have happened, or would not have been as enjoyable. That's the reason I became a mod, to give back to the community I have enjoyed for so long.

Call it ass-kissing or whatever else, but I can seriously sit here and say that I truly believe that the success of UER is due, in a large part, to Av's hard work and financial sacrifice. Everything he has done with UER has been to further the goal of bringing the urban exploration community together, even this election idea. Say what you like about him, but many of you have used the resources available to you on UER and enjoyed what he's done here, so some respect is due.

I have to admit that I am saddened to hear about Av relinquishing control of UER's future to another person, group, or committee. There are some great explorers on this site and there are a few who would be great in such a position. However, I don't trust 90% of the users on UER to not run the site into the ground. I really don't think that these elections are a good idea, and I hope that Av can see that I don't say that as an attack against him. I can see where he is coming from.

This is not the first time the bitching, politics, complaining, and other bullshit has driven Av to almost give up on UER completely, but he has always decided to stay, until now. We, as a group of users (not in our roles as explorers) have taken a man who has given his heart and soul to an idea and to a goal, and driven him away from it. Avatar-X is not to blame for 99% of the troubles plaguing UER, we are.

There have been users who have come onto a forum where the rules are much more lax than 99% of the other forums on the net and complained endlessly about not having the freedom to say or do what they like. People have contributed endlessly to the UE DB, and then turn around and complain about its features. I don't know about the rest of you, but I personally feel 99% of the other UE websites out there don't give you even half of the features available on UER, and yet some of you continue bitching, complaining, and asking for more.

I would love to see Av change his mind and decide to come back, but I don't think that's going to happen. His words to me were that it was either have elections, or shut UER down for good. Personally, I wouldn't care at all if the forums were razed and everything was deleted so we could start from zero and weed all the problems out from day one, but I'm sure that's just me.

Some people complain that "this is just the internet" and wonder why people get so worked up over this kind of stuff. If that's how you feel, that's fine, but for some of us, the interactions we've had on this website, and the way things are run are very important parts of our lives. It may sound like we are "tourists" and "armchair explorers", but I can assure you that is not the case. I still get out and explore just as much as I did before I was introduced to UER, but now my experiences have been enriched by an excellent forum and resource.

Like Jupiter, I just feel the need to rant about all of this. I came here for the community and it is the community I am most concerned with. If elections bring us a more tightly-knit community with fewer problems, that's great, I just don't think it will. I personally feel that this will only bring about more bitching, complaining, and whatever else.

I'm really hoping to be proven wrong.
