Location Condition

Since vandalism seems to be such a big issue for a lot of people around here, I was thinking it might be a good idea to add a "level of vandalism" or "condition" field for entries in the DB. Not only would it be helpful for people who prefer visiting more pristine locations, but it'd also help keep track of what damage a location's been accruing since initially getting added.

Thoughts?

I like the idea of tracking levels of decay and vandalism. In that respect I think this is a good idea.

Just thought I should add, that the intent behind this this isn't to encourage people to start making the connection between locations getting added and an increase in vandalism. Though I'm sure that may be the case now and again, I'm looking at this more from an archival point of view, where making note of an item's condition is standard procedure.

I like the specific idea, but I'm not fond of the "lets blame the location database for increased vandal activity in locations" thing.

While I have a tendency to point out that sites are negatively effected by being included the the DB I was not implying that with my post.

I would be interested in knowing just how heavily tagged a site is prior to visiting it since, for me, extensive graffiti ruins a site.

Yeah, my comment wasn't directed at you. I just thought it was something I should add in case anyone thought it was one of the reasons behind this.

Good idea.

Maybe:

Level of Decay:
1 - Brand spanking new;
2 - Weather damage (broken windows);
3 - Sections unstable;
4 - About to fall over;
5 - Collapsed.

- and -

Level of Vandalism:
1 - Untouched;
2 - Some graffiti, Minor vandalism;
3 - Fair amount of Spray, Tolerable damage;
4 - Covered in Paint, Not a thing left unturned.

Lets take this a step further and make a log of the decay of the place.

something like

May 1 - Newly Abandonded
April 5 - Windows have been smashed
July 12 - West side has been set on fire

and so forth

Specifics, if people want, can always be left in the form of a new thread on the site listing.

Ditto. The other scale is fairly subjective, the timeline style depicts progression and could give details about what was graf'd/vandalized/b&e'd.

The description should be short. Nothing to much in detail. Maybe max 100 char?

I think the timeline progrssion would work well.

I think Skelly's suggestion would work fine for smaller locations but take something the size of Bethlehem Steel and it could start to get stupid. Besides, the point of it wouldn't be to keep track of what happened when and where, because I think that's just asking for problems. The idea is to give people a general idea of what to expect when considering locations to visit. I'm not interested in having people use this feature to point fingers and lay blame.

absolutely it should not be used to point fingers and lay blame. but i do like the idea of knowing how fast the progression happened, not necessarily where (i could easily see how that could fast become ridiculous).

to each, his own.
