| | | Something we've lost recently was the AV Roe (Avro) Aircraft factory at Derry and Airport Road on the Pearson Site. Dunno what they are going to do with it, but a big part of Toronto's aviation heritage was lost with the tearing down of the factory, even though any real link to its WW2 and Post War heyday was long gone thanks to McDonnell Douglas/Boeings ownership in later years.

Wasn't that where the International Centre now sits? If so, it's been gone a long time. Or was it one of the other corners?

Great Western Railway station at Yonge Street, Toronto. The Great Western Railway was extended to Toronto in 1855, running from Niagara Falls to Windsor via Hamilton.

| | | Thursdays Kitchener Record featured a front page picture of a guy on a cherry picker pulling down the smokestack at Bauer. The door we went in when we saw it is now gone. Most of the facade is gone too.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. |

| | | Interesting, Sigma... As an aside, the "Blue Ghost Tunnel" used to be part of the Great Western Rail line running to Niagara.

| | | I didnt know that crossfire. Interesting. Shame they ruined it by sealing it up. Heres what Toronto's Waterfront used to look like. In the first photo you can see that previous Railway station in the distance.

| | | Councillors in Kitchener decided on March 21st to demolish the remaining sections of Forsyth's. The city wants to redevelop the land and include underground parking. The city also wants high-density housing, commercial outlets, restaurants and lively public spaces. But nothing has been decided yet as to what they are going to do with the area after the building is torn down.

| | | Posted by mortimer The Brewer's Retail warehouse at the corner of Leslie and Lakeshore was torn down last year, it wasn't super special, but I believe there were efforts to save it before Crappy Tire decided to just level it and build a new big-box store (coming soon). I was told that there were some very nice art deco-ish details inside the offices of the place, but it took less than a week to flatten it, so I guess I'll never know. |
Actually, that building was used by Brewer's Retail as a warehouse from its construction in 1956. Canadian Tire purchased the building and land from Brewer's Retail in 2001 after Brewer's Retail moved to a new distribution centre in Brampton and never actually occupied the building with the exception of storing some inventory there over the winter of 2003-04. The office section on the second floor was very utilitarian with next to nothing left after BR vacated. In fact, there was next to nothing inside the entire building when they left, and there was a decided lack of anything deco. The building itself was in pretty poor condition with many roof leaks and significant structural issues (don't forget, a lot of the land south of Lakeshore sits is in fact landfill) including some major cracks in the load-bearing walls of the second floor. Really, you didn't miss much. (Edit: Spelling) [last edit 4/27/2006 12:21 AM by Muskoka - edited 1 times]

| | | Good to know I didn't miss much, and thanks for the detailed info. As for landfill and old shorelines, I think that line is actually closer to Queen Street. I've seen photos from the early 1900s of Woodbine disappearing into water about 150 feet south of Queen.
yep. |
