Silhouetting

One of the easiest ways to get spotted, particularly at night is by silhouetting. Most of the time, people dress too darkly (black/navy blue) or don't move low enough to the ground/cover and as a result are VERY easy to spot. Remember, the eye sees movement first, then light, then color.

For most urban areas, a medium gray or olive drab will help prevent you from showing up against a cement or natural background. This is the easier of the two solutions to this problem.

The other problem of course being that the human shape is instantly recognizable. You must learn to move from cover to cover (assuming there are eyes searching for you at all times) while maintaining as low a profile as is possible, while still ensuring mobility. (crawling on your belly through the grass is great and all, but if you need to bolt to cover, you're gonna be that much slower 'coz you have to get onto your feet first)
One thing I reccommend is studying the basic movement principles of Ninjitsu - rolls, breakfalls, and different walking methods that enable you to move much more stealthily.

One technique, which we'll call the 'Rushing Step', is good for places where you have minor cover and it's safe to move swiftly. Lying prone with one leg forward and your hands near your face to look around your cover, you basically do a push-up to get onto your feet and run with your arms low at your sides as close to the ground as possible. In this position, it's very easy to drop to a prone position quickly if need be.

...to be continued...

Nice, love it jolt.

Also, remember to keep sound in mind because in, say, a very dark warehouse, the human senses rely less on vision and more on smell, hearing, and touch. Perhaps taste but lets just assume you arent in the habit of running up and making out with guards so taste wont be a factor.

Lesson 2: Silhouetting while climbing/rooftopping

One of the hardest things to do in regards to minimizing your silhouette is when you have to scale a fence. One obvious thing to do would be to dig your way under, but of course it has MAJOR flaws in regards to UE.
1 - It takes a LONG time to dig a suitable spot out to crawl under a fence, ESPECIALLY if it's partially buried.
2 - Digging is noisy work! Good way to have a guard wander over and ask what it is that you think you're doing.
3 - It leaves a hell of a lot more evidence than you ever want.

For climbing, I usually stick along areas that either have cover (objects such as trees/bushes or even just deep shadows), or climb along a part of the fence that provides cover itself, such as the hinges of a gate (also provides great footholds, as well as a good handhold to get over any barbed wire).

When you reach the top of the fence, you leave a VERY easily spotted silhouette if you remain upright and swing your leg over to straddle the fence, as most people tend to do. If you aren't confident enough in your climbing ability to do otherwise, you can always keep your body hugged up against the top of the fence to minimize your silhouette. If you have enough upper body strength, you can grip the fence in the same manner (torso aligned with fence), and then pull both legs up and over at the same time. This expedites the climb, and is still quiet enough that it shouldn't attract any extra attention.

Of course, when you're going along rooftops, keep as low a profile as possible, even when you're not near the edge. If you have to go to the edge, use the 'Rushing Step' position mentioned in the first post to keep yourself from being too visible.

There are several concepts that get bated around for this. I have read a few books from a guy who was trained by indians. I'll see if I can repost my weasel and fox walk techniques for walking quietly. (named after the animals they mimic) That might be useful to FTFT.

Fence's are best breached fast in my humble opinion.

The eye's may see you go over the top, but its the mind that ultimately makes the decision if your a threat or not. With this in mind sometimes the place you go over can have ill effects to the effectiveness of your passage.

Like Jolt said when you move over gates etc you have lots of foot holds, however most people expect you to be moving in that area. When they see you for a moment they are more likely to go investigate the area. However sometimes being silhouetted for a second in region of fence they dont expect you is more advantageous.

This becomes even more apparent to walking, or driving patrols. These guys are plagued by moving shadows etc all night. If you arent trained to recognize shadows moving abnormally from your direction of travel you will miss alot. Most guards in a patrol car end up not being that effective against even the novice advisery.

I tend to go on missions bare naked. This allows me to stick twigs, leaves, and branches in various places as well it allows me to rub dirt/soot (or whatever median of whatever environment I am in) on my body. This gives me a large degree of stealth.
