| | | I'm traveling up to Western Maryland for a few weekends at the end of March. Does anyone have any neat suggestions (aside from the coke-fired iron furnace in Lonaconing) for places to explore? I'll be in the Oakland, Swallow Falls, Deer Park area. Thanks!

| | | Cumberland has a lot of older industrial and commercial structures, but is a relatively lively town. Go there and explore it, and document/photograph its nice urban appeal in the mountains of western Maryland, becuase there are not really any major abandonments there that I could tell...

| | | I lived in cumberland for a few years. Theres nothing really worth exploring. And definitely nothing abandoned. The real problem though, is that if you do find anything worth sneaking into (I have a time or two) you can't do it without breaking something to get in. (This was I had even heard of the UE rule leave only footprints) Watch out for the city cops though, it's like they're psychic, and you will get arrested if you can't outrun them. Trust me. Other than that it's a cool city the historic district downtown is beautiful, and there are a few tunnels under the older churches from the civil war era. You have to pay to tour them though. If anyone knows something I don't post it. I head back there every now and then and would love to see it. P.S. Check out the old sewage plant south of cumberland in mexico farms. It's off the C&O Canal toepath. That used to be pretty cool.

That seems like a pretty common name, but there is lake or creek or something in Western Maryland with the name Deer. It is a very popular state park and has alot of cabins and camp grounds around it.

| | | Hey, I live in cumberland and im checking out alot of things that are worth exploring. Some of those churches have underground tunnels built in the civil war and junk like that.(this would be serious comando stuff right here or and act of god to infiltrate(if your not on a tour)... but heck you are in a church arnt you... Down at the C&O canal there are some freaky drainage tunnels that come out from the train staition as (like mentioned above) a heck of alot of abandon buildings also down by the very begining of the canal. You can see alot of these things from the highway but of course getting into them without arising suspision of being a vandal. Broken windows are at the top probly about 15 feet off the ground and you just cant scale a wall without a grappling hook or ladder of some sort... and hey your in the middle of the street. So id say you would need some pretty creative tactics to explore some of these sites if you didnt want to break all the rules and give our kind a pretty bad name. Yes as said above.. city cops are pretty phyco... although... they arnt quite as fast as the person said above.. just find some woods that you can bolt through. Also, does anyone know about the school on top the hill when you first enter Cumberland right off the highway before you get to the area where you ride up that really twisty road to the park? | | | Other than rockclimbing or fishing, Cumberland isn't much of a UE area. I am moving back to the VA/MD area soon, and do miss the mountains out there.

| | | My parents live in Deep Creek Lake so I'm pretty familiar with Garrett County. There really are not any abandonments I can think of off the top of my head. How ever Oakland has alot of really beautiful buildings, including city hall, the train station, alot of really nice big houses.
Once uppon a time there was a really awesome hotel in Oakland. But unfortunately it has been long torn down. Here is the only pic I could find of it: Frostburg is also a pretty big place, it's home of Frostburg University so if you explorer around there you might come up with something cool. Garrett County is a really great place, lots of beautiful surroundings and a great lake. Even if there aren't any abandonments it is still a great place to visit. Swallow Falls Park is a great place too if you love water and nature
