| | Dont UE in New Orleans < on 3/14/2006 5:24 PM >
| | | I was thinking it must be great being an UrbExer in New Orleans about now. Then I read this. http://neworleans.indymedia.org/news/2005/09/5570.php "Prisoners were abandoned in their cells without food or water for days as floodwaters rose toward the ceiling." "Many of the men held at jail had been arrested for offenses like criminal trespass, public drunkenness or disorderly conduct. Many had not even been brought before a judge and charged, much less been convicted."

| | | Well, it wasn't on my list anyhow. Seems tacky as hell to UE a disaster site. Well, unless you already live there. At least for a couple of years... Depending on the cool-ness of the site... Ahh, fuck it. Where are my water wings?

| | | Oooooo I would be afraid I would find a body or something. But then I guess that might be a good thing. So that their family would know what happened. I feel sorry for those people.

| | | are you kidding? it's the crowning ue glory. (conveniently located at the end of the mississippi river float down) the hell already happened, can't undo it, might as well go have a gawking look at a decimated city. probably won't ever get a chance at that again. might even work for a while, they're screaming for workers you know.

At least for a couple of years... |
At the current rate not much will have changed, has anyone thought of what would happen if this year a hurricane just flattened the city again? The whole UE a disaster site thing is bad due to you getting pleasure out of other peoples suffering and misery, however you could consider the Paris catacombs a disaster site, if its out of living memory - is it ok? Or is that just after it becomes a tourist attraction, in which case what happens about Ethical Tourism? http://www.tourismconcern.org.uk/

I thought the Paris catacombs were just their version of a graveyard. The caves were there, they buried people in the walls because it was out of the way and convenient.

| | | yeah, upon expanding the city they dug up a huge number of graveyards and in the process all the parts got shuffled, so they decided to stack everything wall to wall in huge underground tunnels, known as the catacombs. Huge tourist attraction. Ive been there, and it's terrifying... the tunnels just go on and on. I'm not claustrophobic or anything, but by the end I was on the verge of panic. yea i gotta agree with you lot up top, UEing a disaster zone reads pretty high on the tackometer.

| | | While I don't really see what this article has to do with UE, I will agree that UE'ing a disaster area is pretty damn stupid. Diseases run rampant, among other things. Structures are less than stable, perhaps more so than usual. Not to mention, the police presence would be much, much higher than usual.

| | | Sounds like quite a fortress! JK. Apparently this Parish Jail is no Ryker's Island. Somehow "break windows" and "jail" shouldn't be compatible. If it was me bro I'd look at the source(s) Just because it's on the internet with a solid sounding name does not mean it comes from an unbiased source. Who uses the "Human Right Watch" people as a media source? GOOSEEGG! That aside, I'd be there in a heartbeat; there was a great old hospital that was flooded, currently operating in the superdome. And then I would have had a beer in the bar that never ( and didn't ) closes.
I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying. |

| | Re: Dont UE in New Orleans <Reply # 18 on 3/17/2006 10:06 AM >
| | | Ya know I was thinking about this...there's lots of places that were the sites of tragedy and unimaginable disdain for humanity, but no one has a problem with those places. Asylums in the the US (and elsewhere for that matter) don't have a sparkling record of being "kind" or "nice" places in the least. Yet they make up a huge segment of what is explored. Then look at places like Chernobyl...insane tragedy, yet many of us want to go there and explore that. If there's something that's more accessible now that the hurricane hit, I say go for it. | | | My sister has been to NO twice post-katrina with a University, Church-affiliated school group to help with cleanup. They wore filter masks the entire time and only spent a few days there. After coming home, she was blowing black crap out of her nose for days afterwards. Not a healthy place to be, especially if you're planning on doing a lot of crawling and building work.
