| | | OH - Portsmouth Ice House < on 5/3/2005 7:27 AM >
| | | http://www.uer.ca/...ow.asp?locid=22821 -- I received an informative e-mail last night about this place. I assumed a brewery as it resembled other structures that were in the area and was in the Brewery district. The e-mail states it was an ice house: > The pictures that you posted are actually of the old ice house. Ice > was cut from the Ohio and Scioto Rivers and stored in that tall brick > building. There are numerous underground tunnels leading from that > building to many of the old buildings that still stand on Second > Street. These tunnels were used to transport the ice,... and sometimes > runaway slaves. > > The Ice House lays between Front Street and Second Street, and is right > next to the old city jail and the FOP Lodge. Directly to the north of > the ice house (located on Second Street across from Pat's Bar) is the > actual old brewery. It now has a new (as of 1996) > micro-brewery/restaurant located inside. The owner of the Scioto > Ribber Restaurant owns this restaurant as well. I think his name is > Steve Mault (I could be wrong about his first name, but I know his son, > Will Mault, who runs the brewery/restaurant and is currently running > for Mayor of Portsmouth. > > You can access the ice house from the brewery,... at least when I lived > there you still could,... via the tunnels. The old jail I had covered previously but I need to add the photos. It is a stone structure with some remainants of the past. The old brewery that he mentions that has the micro-brewery serves good food (mmmmm). I will update the pages with more information as I get them in!

| | | Hm... Any way to access the tunnels from the old brewery at this point? It might be an interesting day trip if we could. Lunch and exploration together. What do you think?
