Urban-Not

Urbanaut or Urban-not?

People have been talking of a ‘revolutionary’ way to regulate UE. I think this is a bad idea. People heavily involved in UE consider this at one time or another I’m sure, but dismiss it after about 15 seconds of rational thought.

Firstly, why would anyone want to regulate a hobby? It’s like dictating to a guy who makes model planes what glue he can use. There’s no revenue generated from anything any of us do in relation to the hobby. There aren’t any sponsors or advertisers we have to appease, so what is seriously the point? If it’s because of the media, that also doesn’t hold much water. We as explorers already admit we do something illegal, so that right off the bat paints us with a tar brush. You can say ‘We don’t steal’ or ‘We have ethics’ until you’re blue in the face, it’s not going to make a lick of difference. It’s not like with lawyers or politicians who have to hide the scandal, the ‘scandal’ is right out in the open. Going where we’re not supposed to is what we base our hobby on, just like drug users base their hobbies on drugs. In the eyes of the viewing public, we are all already criminals.

Does anyone seriously think that the public is going to see a difference between urban explorers and urbanauts? The media is not going to differentiate between the two what so ever. If you’re not seen when you do your explorations, you allow the media to invent what ever perception they feel like. They can say we’re all satan worshipping baby killers, whatever the victim of the week is. Unless you make it VERY clear to everyone exactly who is and who is not an urbanaut, the urbanaut movement will also get the brush. The only ways people would even begin to see a difference between an urbanaut and the average vacant-building dwelling scum, would be:
a) publicize a list of names and addresses of every member of the organization
b) be seen in urbanaut uniforms going into the site, posting a date and time you plan to enter
c) leave something there, like a removable mural or business cards

One’s obviously not going to let their personal information be published in relation to something like this, as nick names would not be suitable. Now, assuming identical symbols or colours were displayed, what would the police think if they caught a group of people calling themselves urbanauts inside an abandoned building? They would likely think it was an organized terrorist movement, and until proven otherwise would treat it exactly as such. It’s a very different world since September 11th. Leaving something at the site itself compromises ethics, so that too is out of the question. Another way is the whole movement could get tattoos across their foreheads, but that would be pushing it.

I’m going to predict the urbanaut movement (if it does take off) will act the very same way the republican party of the US does. Good intentions, but once you add in the human benefactor, the whole system turns to shit. Billy Urbanaut will let Jonny Explorer call himself an urbanaut, knowing they has less than ideal ethics, but Jonny is a friend of Billy. Personal politics CAN and WILL get involved in this. The perfect democracy, simply, does not exist. Essentially, it will get bigger and bloat and bloat, then fall flat on it’s face when disaster strikes.

In the eyes of the media, we are the arsonists, graffiti artists, transients and drug users. If you can’t handle that label, the one that will never change, exploring is not for you. If you cant handle the legal risks, exploring is not for you. If you can’t handle the fact that you might get seriously injured exploring, again, it’s not for you. Precaution all you want, accidents happen, and a situation can jump from good to horrendous in the blink of an eye.

That’s all I have to say about it. Leave some feedback if you wish.

You forgot to mention that we are also viewed as thieves and vandals. Of course some people have perpetuated that, while others of us have not...

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.
