Not sure were to post this? So ... I thought you'd be interested in the artist Naomi Safran-Hon who creates paintings of abandoned houses. I wonder if she paints on site "En plein air"? Any UE here who make art with or at the places they explore?

Good article on her painting in the NY Times today.

I'm not an artist but I'm a Lori Nix fan. Look her up if you're unfamiliar. She makes miniatures and photographs them, but they look like real urbex shots.

I think I saw her on Art21. Her stuff is so cool! It blows me away what people can make.

That's a gorgeous painting. I like Kim Dorland's paintings, they are not quite as "urbexy" but still inspired by the urban and natural landscape. (Sorry, I can't help sharing stuff about paintings haha)

I tried sketching in a wreck of a barn, but my hands got cold and it smelled like poo so I stuck to photos - I know, I'm a wimp! Once I animated cartoon forest animals on top of another explorers photo.

I'd be excited to see any uer members creations.

I looked her up ... Lori Nix's miniatures are amazing. They look so lifelike.

https://www.nytime...mi-safran-han.html

"Ms. Safran-Hon... begins her compositions with ink-jet-print renderings of her photographs of the interiors of abandoned residencies in her neighborhood, Wadi Salib, in Haifa. She then lathers on wet cement at selected points in the image so that when dry its textured surface juts out at the viewer, making the walls palpably stony, and pockmarking the rest of the scene through holes gouged in the canvas."

According to the article you shared, it's not a painting. It's mixed media starting with an inkjet print as its base. (So I think that answers the question of plein-air-or-not, unless she's dragging a along a large-format printer, laptop, cement mixer, and generator.)

spacetimecurvature takes some of her shots, posterizes the palette, and does it as a more-abstract version in acrylic on canvas.

(I did this as a quick snap without doing as much as I should've with the lighting. Apologies if it does not render her intent well-enough.)

I wonder what other aspects of her work are done on location. Many artists, like myself, take photographs, make preliminary sketches and field recordings while working on site "En plein air" then continue the creative process in the studio.

Paintings by Anselm Kiefer and Julian Schnabel are textured with mixed media and the last time I checked they are still called paintings!

Very interesting photographs by spacetimecurvature, great locations and she has a good eye for composition. I searched but couldn't find any examples of her posterized, acrylic on canvas paintings. It would be nice to see those. Do you have a link to share?

I did this ceiling and the face and skyline in the second shot. There have been several painting parties held in this drain and this whole junction is now completely covered.

I am not an artist but I'll do little things to help the next guy. I'll construct little bridges over watery areas or write useful notes for someone else to read. An example would be "Be wary of syringes on ground" or "Bats ahead, careful". I've even un-boobytrapped a few places where trash naturally fell over a large hole on the floor or more likely- some douche bag placed trash over the hole for someone to walk over and possibly fall to their death. I don't have enough heart strings to make an entire building safe but I try to help where I can if its on my way or in my way.

I'm a lone explorer because I hate people.
