Daughter and I went on a trek and found two odd buildings in the forest a couple miles from anywhere. I found them while going over satellite imagery looking for structures to explore.

It was a good couple miles from anything. No road in, just two buildings.

Anyone have any ideas?

One of them was entirely cased in metal panels with a very sturdy door. The other was again metal but with it pealed back from the door as you can see in the pic.

The chimney's are interesting.
I would expect vents rather than fire places in a building that size.
Toilet block?

Yeah, those chimneys look like the ones you see in outhouses. If it is an outhouse, it's odd that it's got a solid steel door though.

Could've been storage for an old farm or something. Could be why there isn't anything near it. The land behind me used to be a huge farm and now it's all forest. Old houses and machinery is scattered around.

Yeah those are vents.
Maybe a pumping station.

Hmmmm, they don't look that old given the use of cinder block and not stone. If it was a pumping station or something like that there would be an access road. Doesn't look like there is any electric or gas hook-ups.

I'd say either look for some tax records on the property or bring it up with some locals (gas station or restaurant) that you were hiking and found something odd.

I'm from WV so my gut says you found someone's old moonshine operation.

Could be a smokehouse or a maple syrup operation given those chimney vents too. It's near impossible to know unless you can get inside though.

Some time I will have to go back and take my powerful flashlight, see if I can take a peek in.

When I was a kid I lived on a farm. We had a large barn, maybe 12 stalls plus hay storage, tack room etc. I used to help muck out for pocket money.

One day we played hide and seek in the barn at suppertime, I was probably 7 or 8 years old with a few friends that day. We lost track of each other in the barn as we played, little did I know my dad had come out to get us for supper. I heard a noise and put my eye to one of the cracks/slats between stalls. My father made a scary noise and slammed his eye up against the crack his eye opposite mine.

Something broke in me that moment. I am 43 and I can still remember it like it was yesterday. I was scared stupid, one of my hands started to twitch.

The idea of pressing my face up against a dark crack, to see through to the other side. Not sure I could do it. I can make my daughter do it though.

I will report back.

*snap*
Is the legendary Barn of Doom connected to this fortified building?
As reported before its vast underground tunnel network/complex is all over the US.
Could be another large Hive under The Shed... just saying.

So many UER members have disappeared since the Barn of Doom was first reported here.

My guess is that someone is storing stuff that they would like to keep out of the prying eyes of whoever.

I would rule out moonshiners based on the fact that to make moonshine, you need heat. I don't see any chimneys or even a stockpile of wood for the fire. Another strike against moonshiners is that such stills are usually outdoors because of the heat.

An interesting feature of the building with the steel door is how high the door is with no steps or ladder. This leads me to believe that whatever is in these buildings, it comes and goes in the bed of a pickup truck.

My uncle kept his stock of dynamite in similar structures, but there was a drivable trail to get to them.

MANY years ago, a couple of teenagers took some shots at a similar building near Des Moines that contained about 12 tons of dynamite. It didn't end well for them.

I didn't think about dynamite. My family has a farm and we used to rent space to a drilling company that kept 2 trailers of dynamite there. I don't know the exact regulations but they have to be kept a certain distance from roads and dwellings. They were metal trailers that were up on blocks and had the wheels removed. The rear door was welded shut and there were double locks on the front doors. They also had chimney's/vents similar to your photos. They were on a rear access road to the farm and if I had to guess they were only accessed a couple times per year. All that being said they were painted bright red and were marked as containing explosives.

In the first pic you can see a track for a sliding barn door. You can also see where it was covered over.

Timber around the door looks like rough. Old or from a small, portable style mill. Tin was added later no doubt.

Could have been a small hay barn. You need ventilation for hay to let out moisture (the vents up on the roof) or it can spontaneously catch fire. Would explain the height of the door off the ground too. Would have originally been to pull the trailer up to toss off hay.

Could have been an old drying barn. Tobacco barns did use gas and kerosene heaters at least as early as the 50's, and they needed roof vents. Although that would be a very small one, and they're usually taller than they are wide. Could be drying something else now....

Cinderblocks have been used in construction since around the early 1900's. No real teller of age.

Likewise, a couple decades will erase a trail or road.

Find your county's GIS website and see who owns it. It will also show you how much of the land around it belongs to them as well. A structure that old is probably recorded, though there wont be much info except maybe square footage.

Was there mining in the area back in the day? We have one like this on an old mining ground that is similar to this and was used for dynamite storage.
