Threads creation is sort of like a photo of the day, but rather narrowed down to all stuff train related. Examples could include pics of trains, especially ones that are abandoned! Train tunnels, Train trestles, Train bridges, railroad stations, and all other stuff that's train related in the PNW from urban explorational perspectives. Preferably not shots from sidewalks or out your window while your driving.

Thank you! And perhaps if you would like you could create the same thread but in the photography section... I just am specifically interested in the region I explore most often in, so I created the thread there.

There' a bike trail in Wisconsin called the Elroy- Sparta Trail, which is named for the towns it starts and ends at. It's a rail-to-trail bike path, where old railroad tracks were torn up to convert it into a 32.5 mile long bike trail. It passes through three decomissioned railroad tunnels, the first two being a quarter mile long each with the third measuring 0.75 miles long.

Back in high school my Boy Scout troop went on a weekend bike trip along that trail. The tunnels were long enough that the temperature difference between the inside and outside created a cloud of fog hung around outside either ends of the tunnels and filled them throughout. I'd strap a flashlight to my bicycle and fly through those tunnels at full speed, with only the beam of my flashlight lighting my way as it was swallowed by the mist. I highly recommend it for anyone with a bicycle in the central Wisconsin area.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

I was in the PNW July 2012. I saw this lonely caboose across the lake from the state capital in Olympia.

Do you guys feel that no matter how many times you go out and explore, and no matter how many awesome locations you explore and photograph, you are never satisfied with the pictures you have taken and your collection?

I definitely feel that way.

This appears to be the most appropriate thread for my new pictures. I hiked a good chunk of the old Tillamook Railway today with my primary adventure partner - Charles F. Puppenstuff.

As an avid backpacker, I'm really excited at the prospect of this becoming a trail that I could use to get to the coast. However, the explorer in me will mourn the loss of the experience I had today. We had the entire trail to ourselves all day.

Charlie was very excited; I had a busy work week and had neglected her exercise other than a brief run on Monday.

The aspen grove was pretty awesome. As we walked I remembered reading somewhere that aspens share a root system, making them technically one tree. They are therefore the largest organisms on our planet. An entire forest is one "being".

With Charlie in the lead, we got to the first tunnel and made it thru without getting shit on by bats.

When we got to the first trestle, I got this look. I guess she was starting to question my skills as a navigator.

One by one we made them across, until we reached a point that was too washed out with fresh water running from the side. I'll need to come back here in the summer when it's drier, but the day still ended with a very happy and tired doggo.

Those are all red alder, not aspen. Non-clonal hardwood tree; great for smoking meat with.

When there is tranquility, you are in the right place. When there are no footprints, you are on the right path. When there are no tire tracks, you are on the right road.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. Interesting that they grow in such abundance even tho they don't share a root system like aspens.

Did you climb?

The thing is just 20-30 minutes north of Portland and I have climbed it several times in the past but this time I didn't. That's my friend climbing it. He is afraid of heights but is a big fan of seeking discomfort/facing his fears and I encouraged him to continue and make it all the way. He did it and was stoked.
