World Hacking?

I kinda don't like the term, but you know what I mean: Modifying your immediate surroundings to suit your personal preferences. I figure there must be a fair amount of that going on with the crowd around here.

My personal favourite move was improving the bus terminal near my mom's old place in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. It looks like this from the air:

https://www.google.ca/maps/@45.4019694,-73.9407324,244a,35y,41.18t/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

About 8 bus bays, 6 bus lines lines terminate here; it's not an insubstantial spot. I think it was 15 or 20 years back that the public transit authorities swung a deal with Macdonald College (the university campus in the background) for the space at the front of their expansive campus on Lakeshore Road.

If you zoom in to Streetview level, you'll see that there's a sort of chain fence that separates the campus from the road. To keep idiots from driving on the expansive lawn, I dunno?

When the bus terminal was constructed, the morons that run the University campus facilities saw fit to wrap it with more of that chain fence, save for all of two obstruction-free passages.

It's a huge-ass campus. People go to and from 10 different directions when they get off the buses here.

After a few years of watching people hopping over the chains (and occasionally tripping, especially in the winter when the desire paths kinda suck to begin with) on their way to their various destinations I decided to do something about it. I borrowed some bolt-cutters and opened up about 6 more holes in the fence one night. You can see them in the Streetview imagery.

Stupidly, I left the chains on the ground and the campus maintenance guys replaced them within a couple of days. This pissed me off, so a couple of nights later I chopped that fence up once again, this time hauling the chains off to the nearest recycling bin.

Facilities management finally got the message the 2nd time. The cut chains weren't replaced. Instead, they installed small boulders between the fence posts, that people could easily walk around. In whichever way they were headed. All thanks to the power of my deviant mind. And a pair of big-ass bolt-cutters.

Another modification that comes to mind is the men's can at a Macdonald's resto not far from my place. I despise Macdonald's as much as I despise all the other other greed-tard corporations. But it's at a corner where I sometimes switch buses. Their coffee, for $1, is not bad at all, there's a decent grocery store nearby, and sometimes a dude needs to take a shit in transit, ya know?

One time I stopped in to lay some cable, and the muzak got particularly on my nerves. As if the eardrum-damaging hand dryers weren't bad enough. So I pulled the speaker down from the ceiling, tore off the wires, and put it back, carefully, so it wouldn't fall down. Five years later, the men's can of that McDo is still peacefully muzak-free. So, you're welcome, all you male Macdo defecators. Even if you are a bunch of retards.

What kind of nefarious shit have you guys been up to?

Those noisy 115 db Dyson hand dryers in public restrooms that are unsanitary junk use 2 small plastic lens for the IR sensors that it turn on.
A little plastic crazing brake fluid works wonders...
Works on those way too bright LED signs too

What differentiates this from simple vandalism aside from your personal judgement of the desirability/usefulness of the "mod"? Honest question. I thought the accepted ethic that does not rely upon personal subjective judgment was to leave no trace.

Well this isn't UE... as for my modifications none have been made but the temptation is there.
Sometimes knowing you can do it is enough

It's stuff done for the greater good of the commuting / defecating public. I can appreciate that some people might see these sorts of things as acts of vandalism. Put I'm 100% fine with undoing stupidity. As long as it doesn't expose me to any undue risks.

Next project on my radar: installing some coat hooks in the stalls of the new Cafe Olimpico outlet downtown. Barista guy informs that the toilets are the purview of the landlord of the restaurant upstairs, so it's complicated getting changes made. Not so much for me with my cordless drill and $5 of Chinese hardware. Why should I have to hike up my long coat like a girl when I need to use their facilities?

I agree with your premise. Hacking a place with stuff like "coat hooks" does the place better. Sometimes places can be improved upon for everybody else. It's amazing what another set of eyes can see.

"Liberation is acting as if you are already free."

There's an abandoned parking lot next to my office. I've been slowly tearing up the asphalt bit by bit, speeding up natures reclamation.

Couple comrades of mine put together a 'seed bombing' workshop at a local park. They set up a picnic table with tissue paper, potting soil and native wild flower seeds, and taught any interested passerby how to make seed bombs to do some guerilla gardening in all the small, neglected strips of dirt and turf around the city.

Do you see what happens, Larry, when you post your dumb shit to the internets?

Had fifteen minutes to kill on my way the bro's bank this morning, so I stopped into the McDo for a coffee. Lo and behold... the fuckin' muzak's back in the men's can. I couldn't find it in myself to undo some poor wage slave's work too quickly (and bring attention upon my ways), so I left it be. For now.

Still. Five years of peaceable men's pooping! That's a pretty good run.
