Opening in 1965, the Midwestern Regional Center was the Ontario government's attempt to restore developmentally disabled children and adults, but was designed mostly for children. In the 1970's, the amount of adults in the building surpassed the number of children. When the Ontario government realized that putting someone in a building and telling them to get better doesn't work, they decided to take a more community centered approach to the problem, closing the building in 1998. In 2011, it was purchased with the intent of converting it to a Buddhist temple, but little progress has been made.
