I happened to come across these shoes and thought they were interesting. Although I wear high top boots when I explore, I know a number of you like the comfort of athletic shoes.

These are interesting because they have a hard safety toe and a puncture resistant sole. Of course they aren't the perfect safety shoe, but they look like a big step up from the regular athletic shoes that some of you wear.

I suspect this is an inventory clearance website, not the original distributor.

Zero ankle protection or support... worthless.
The toes aren't the weak link; the ankle and Achilles tendon are!

You can get puncture resistant insole liners for any shoe.

I understand. Just giving an option to the sneaker crowd.

For urban exploration it is probably better to have some sort of ankle protection. Not always necessary but if you're walking on big debris something could slide out from under you and it'd be easy to roll an ankle.

I'd imagine hobbling out of an abandoned building on one good foot wouldn't be ideal, nor would explaining to EMS why you were trespassing in a dangerous building.

Side note, would they report something like that to the police? I know they are obligated for stuff like gunshot wounds but I've never thought about in our industry.

Are we living a life that is safe from harm? Of course not, we never are. But that's not the right question. The question is, are we living a life that is worth the harm?

I've never, ever come close to injuring my ankle while exploring.

Yes you have. You simply didn't know it. Should be getting all the ankle support you can get!

I personally wear leather boots. Either my 8 inch leather work boots that I use in a shop all day if I don't plan to hike a long distance. They have proven themselves over the years if I get into something questionable they keep my feet safe from nails, glass, and such. In addition they provide the ankle coverage that I prefer having. The other option I use is my hiking/backpacking boots. Being from Pennsylvania I am use to having to make sure my ankle doesn't roll on rocks and such so they do a good job of that, but being as they walk better they work for me if I need to walk far to get into the POI.

Just my 2 cents on what works for protective footwear. I also don,t ever use safety or steel toe shoes because they I have never found a pair that fit me well and the steel is cold if the weather is freezing.

Yeah, it's way more important to protect ya neck. Never know when you'll fall down and impale your throat on an exposed pipe.

Lol, said this many times before and some of you will learn the hard way.
You can't control fate but you can add backup protection in hazardous locations and limit damage.
I wear high top lace up boots everyday... for good reasons.
A foot puncture heals in a week or two not so with severe tendon injuries.

I personally know 5 athletic people who permanently injured their ankles in their 20's not from fractures but fascia/tendon tears on the outside of the ankle.
These are extremely hard to successfully repair maybe impossible.
https://www.foot.t...article/S1083-7515(03)00006-8/fulltext
These stabilize the foot and help keep it from "rolling over".
Add to the these the Achilles tendon which high tops also protect from pulls and direct physical injuries including a envenomation.
There are good reasons the military has used high top lace up boots for over a century.

A forceful footfall onto a rock, uneven surface or missplaced foolfall on a step is all it takes even if you're in top physical shape.
If you find yourself learning the names/functions of these tendons from an orthopedic surgeon you will be sorry you decided to ignore what I tried to warn you about... for a very long time

If you have a preexisting knee stability issue, overturning an ankle say on a steep slope can also take that knee out as well.
A good pair of high top boots can help to prevent this...

Then I guess I've been extremely lucky in my 14 years of exploring. In my first few years I used to explore wearing a full suit of armour but it seemed too bulky so I gradually scaled down; I guess not everybody does.

I actually messed up my left ankle slipping on a stack of magazines while descending a dark staircase.

After I don't know how many different doctors and specialists it still hasn't ever really healed and often still bothers me. That was 1996. Looking back at all the time that has passed I realize that now I have spent the majority of my life with an ankle that still causes me pain and doesn't work right for a stupid incident in the 90s.

The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave.

I rather be lucky than good...
Stacking the odds in your favor is the next best thing; limit the damage by protecting this valuable asset.
Boots should always be worn when climbing ladders for safety and to protect the arch. A collapsed arch is sudden, painful and a very tough rehab at best.

Boots or flat soled tennis (Converse style) shoes should always be worn when weight training especially squating and dead lifting. Running shoes sideways sponginess can destabilize you and cause serious injury as well as adversely effecting your lift weights and form.

Since we are on the topic of running shoes, which type of shoe last is right for you? This is important for any type of activity footwear though. Choosing the correct last can prevent both repetition and acute injuries of the foot.
If you haven't done so, study your walking/running gait and modify your shoe last type as needed to help prevent debilitating injuries.
http://www.aapsm.o...nning-anatomy.html

Curve last: If you Supinate your footfalls when you walk or run.

Semicurve last: normal gait.

Straight last: if you pronate. Plus an arch support if needed.

Shoes types, construction:

Put some thought into your feet and footwear for greater comfort, performance and muscle/tendon/ligament/joint protection.
The feet are the power base of most of all of what you do with your body...
