So there's a house nearby that I've visited a few times now. As I understand it, a typical meth lab is going to be guarded and have a smell among other things. However upon a visit today there was a rooster crowing and this house is in a place where there should be no roosters. Does anyone here think it could be a sort of "alarm" or am I paranoid?

More likely to see a meth dump than an active lab (depending on where you live). Here's some good articles about recognizing precusor chemicals and typical equipment.

I tend to avoid places with very wet and/or rotting floors (especially if broken in the middle), biohazard superfunds, places recently raided/closed by police. If you have a bad feeling about visiting a potential explore don't go. Better safe than sorry.

According to LEOs I know, "meth labs" have changed or gone away due to the plentiful supply coming from Mexico, garage cooks and labs in the backs of vans are just not cost effective any more when you can buy 30 gallon drums of the stuff dry it and cut it up cheaper.

This is another boogie man urbexors want to worry about, yeah theres still some around but if theyre so common to be an exploring hazard why don't we see anyone posting pics of them?

Ive personally only seen one place I suspected of being a cooking operation and it was no longer active or smelling.

Maybe not industrialized large scale labs made for profit, but there are absolutely are yee-haw redneck backwoods meth labs still kicking. It's not hard to cook and you can make high quality gear for cheap for yourself and buddies.
I work in the ER and see people come in with full body burns from cooking every once in a while.

Since everyone else has already summed up the unlikeliness of finding an active meth lab, I'll just add if you find an inactive meth lab its better to yeet because places where meth is made are very toxic and possibly carcinogenic, and it really doesn't get that much better with time cause it sinks into the walls lol.

Plus cooks supposedly like to booby trap their labs. But I wouldn't know for sure, because in half a decade of exploring I've never found one, abandoned or active.

"Sorry, I didn't know I'm not supposed to be here," he said, knowing full well he wasn't supposed to be there.

Your nose will help keep you safe. If it doesn't smell right or isn't something you are familiar with then stop and decide if it's worth it.

To be overwhelmingly paranoid myself, if you ever find something that even remotely resembles a meth lab, for the love of god do not touch anything, kick anything on the ground, and slap a respirator on if you don’t have one on already. But I’d recommend taking a few pictures and getting out of there!

If your uncle Jack were stuck on a roof. And he asked for your help. Would you help your uncle Jack off?
