And just one more thought. Cell phones are a great tool and I wouldn't go without mine. BUT, they aren't a guarantee that you can reach someone in a time of need. If you are in a reception fringe area, or just somewhere that you don't get a good connection, remember that text messages will often go out when a voice call is impossible.

When we are up at our mine, I often have to hike up a nearby hill to try to find any voice reception, but back in camp text messages will come in and go out without much problem.

Good lights - plural, and your phone doesn't count.

I couldn't agree more!

Finding yourself in a hazardous location as the sun sets is the beginning of a very dangerous situation. Lights are actually life-support equipment when we head underground. The odds of finding your way out of a complex mine without light is pretty close to zero.

If exploring is something you are interested in pursuing, then buy yourself a decent quality headlamp. No HomeDespot or Lowen $5 headlamps. Petzl, Streamlight, Pelican, Fenix, and Black Diamond are all good brands. Yeah, you pay more but you have a light that will get you out of trouble and last for years. Plus they are really useful even working around the house.

Pepper spray is a defensive weapon, so you could use it to protect yourself. Not suspect at all.

I've been searched one time after getting caught leaving a place and had pepper spray on me. I told the cop and handed it to him and gave him permission to search my backpack. He was totally uninterested in the pepper spray - and I got off with a warning after he searched my bag.
Being female might make the pepper spray easier to get away with, but cops generally aren't going to care because it's used for self defense.

I got one for ya, bug repellent! Cutter Backwoods or Off Deep Woods, stuff that repels against ticks as well as mosquitoes. I never explore without it.

Also, you definitely worry too much, so what you really got to do is just go for it. Jump in, do NOT wait for yourself to feel comfortable. Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy. You're young enough that even if you do get arrested (and you won't, but even if you did) it won't matter. It's good to make mistakes and learn!

Anxiously awaiting your pictures!

Some decent work gloves- sturdy enough to protect you from thorns and barbed wire, but not so thick that they impede your dexterity. I've scraped and/or gotten unpleasant substances on my hands too often to ever explore with them.

A shop towel soaked with Windex/water in a plastic bag to clean hands and gear. Nice for small cuts etc too.
I started habitually wearing shop gloves with the fingers cut out more for sun protection although they really cut down hand injuries without getting much in the way. Got a pair on right now...

It all depends on where you go, If I go somewhere way far out, I'd take some multitools and a personal locator beacon along with my normal stuff, Small Medkit, Flashlights, A small pocket knife [Nothing over a 3-inch blade] and water. Plus camera gear, Maybe a little snack too.

Always take a snack.
I'm always hungry after (or during) a good explore.
